Russia - Ukraine crisis : Russia to ensure safety, wellbeing of Nigerians

 

Russia has assured that it would continue to provide necessary assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens in the Russian Federation.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Embassy of Nigeria in Moscow, Russia on sideline of the meeting between officials of the two countries.

The meeting was between Prof. Abdullahi Shehu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nigeria to Russia with concurrent accreditation to Belarus, and Mikhail BOGDANOV, Special Representative of Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa.

BOGDANOV, who is also Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, gave the assurance at the meeting with Shehu in his office.

The statement said: “BOGDANOV informed Shehu regarding logistics arrangements put in place by the Russia to assist in the evacuation of Nigerian students that were stuck in Kherson, Ukraine.

“He assured the ambassador that the Russian Government will provide necessary assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens in the Russian Federation.

“During their conversation, the current situation in Ukraine was discussed, as well as a range of topical matters regarding the future development of the traditionally friendly Russia-Nigeria relations.

“Also were efforts to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, economy, science, technology, culture, humanitarian sphere and other fields.”

 The embassy said BOGDANOV further informed Shehu that the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation would offer admissions to Nigerians willing to continue their education in Russia.

The minister recalled the warm and beneficial relationships between Nigeria and Russia, as well as the latter`s military and political support to Nigeria during the civil war.

It also mentioned that such support was in the area of subsequent assistance to Nigeria to build the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, as well as assistance for nuclear technology development for peaceful purposes.

“He further assured the Nigerian Envoy that Russia considers Nigeria as an important country and a strategic partner in Africa and will continue to strengthen our bilateral relationships,” the statement added.

Responding, Shehu expressed appreciation to the Government of Russia for its concern and assistance towards the plights of Nigerians.

Shehu recalled that the cordial relations between Nigeria and the Russian Federation at the bilateral, continental and global levels, including Nigeria`s support towards the Russia-Africa Summit.

He commended such relations to have been in areas of global issues such as fight against terrorism, climate change and international peace and security.

The ambassador, however, requested the Russian authorities to provide necessary conducive environment for the welfare and well being of Nigerians in Russia and strengthen Nigeria-Russian bilateral relations in all sectors.

 A pro-Biafra group, the Biafra Nations League (BnL) has issued a disclaimer over alleged plans by the Cameroonian soldiers to attack Cross River State borders.

The BNL stated this in a statement issued by the group's Deputy Leader, Ebuta Takon. 
The group further alleged that the Nigeria's Military has failed live up to its responsibility of protecting adding that the Military targets the Biafran groups while external forces are encroaching on its territory.
The statement reads, “Biafra Nations League, BnL, have stated that its members and men of its self defence wing will resist invasion of Cameroonian Soldiers in the Cross River borders.
“This is coming after Cameroonian military invaded Adamawa, northern region of Nigeria. 
“Deputy Leader of BnL, Ebuta Takon said the Nigerian military have failed live up to their expectations, while accusing the military of targeting the Biafran groups while external forces are encroaching on its territory.
“Takon said the era when Cameroon took over Bakassi Peninsula was gone, insisting that the group will not be expecting the Nigerian Army to fight in defense of the former Eastern territory.
“BNL said it was responsible for destruction and vandalisation of structures erected by Cameroonian authorities in the Bakassi Peninsula, insisting that it will not allow the Republic to enjoy full sovereignty over the region. 
“Recall that in November 8, 2022 members of BnL took temporal control of the Welcome to Bakassi entrance, a boundary between Akpabuyo and Bakassi chasing the Nigerian Army from the area, they fled when heavily armed contingents arrived. They were mistaken to be IPOB supporters.”

BIAFRA NEWS : Ohanaeze Blasts Umahi For Claiming To Have Initiated Nnamdi Kanu’s Release With Buhari

 

The youth arm of the Ohanaeze group, Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has disagreed with Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi over his recent claims that he has opened talks with President Muhammadu Buhari for a political resolution of Nnamdi Kanu’s case.

This comes after Umahi claimed talks are ongoing with President Buhari to find a political solution to the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He also assured the Igbo people that Nnamdi Kanu has not been abandoned and will soon regain his freedom from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

But the OYC under the leadership of Igboayaka O. Igboayaka in a statement on Friday accused Umahi of attempting to score cheap political points with the claim.

The Ohanaeze youth group added that the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Professor George Obiozor led other prominent Igbo personalities to negotiate the release of Kanu and not Umahi as claimed.

The statement added that Umahi had openly rejected IPOB during a previous meeting in Enugu wondering why he’s now claiming to be the ‘messiah’ for Kanu.

“Governor David Umahi might be looking for a soft landing to appeal to Ndigbo and IPOB over reckless treatment coated with executive impunity as Ebonyi State Governor. And coming out suddenly to score a cheap political goal in the release of Nnamdi Kanu is very untrue and childish,” the group stated.

“Those at the helm of affairs of a political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s case have not taken it to the media space, they are engaging in a lasting solution to the crisis that has erupted in the country for over seven years of IPOB’s struggle for self-determination. Unfortunately, on June 19, 2021, in Enugu State, the same Governor David Umahi chaired a meeting wherein IPOB was publicly rejected by those who claimed to be Igbo leaders.

“Governor David Umahi ought to know that all his discriminatory communique signed by him against Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB are in our archive and in the book of remembrance. The claim by Ebonyi Governor of interfacing to release of Nnamdi Kanu at Abakaliki on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, has summarized the Igbo adage, “Nwoke luchaa ogu, nwanyi enwere akuko”. Therefore, Umahi should look for something else through which he can gain favour from Ndigbo and not to lay claims to glory of Kanu’s release process.

“I can authentically and authoritatively inform our people that every strategic and tactical effort has been made on the release of Nnamdi Kanu by Obiozor without any political interest but basically on his personal conviction as a true Igbo man and his constitutional duty as the number one citizen of the Igbo nation.”

OYC, therefore, called on members of the public not to be hoodwinked by the attempt of Governor Umahi to claim the glory in the struggle for the IPOB leader’s release.

“I appeal to Igbo youths over the globe who may be provoked by Governor David Umahi’s self-glory to remain peaceful and calm and assist in finding a political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s case by acting within the framework of the law”.

BIAFRA NEWS : Nnamdi Kanu Issues Fresh Message To IPOB Members

 

The detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has sent words of encouragement to his followers and supporters.

Naija News reports that the lead counsel to the IPOB leader, Aloy Ejimakor, made this known in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Thursday.

Ejimakor stated that the IPOB leader’s lawyers visited him on Thursday at the headquarters of the Department of State Service (DSS) in Abuja after previous visitations were aborted.

The lawyer stated that Kanu asked his followers and supporters to remain optimistic about his freedom and the quest for a sovereign nation of Biafra.

The lawyer said the visitation was very important because of past visitations which were denied by the secret police.

“We just concluded a visitation with Onyendu Nnamdi Kanu. Today’s visitation is very important because of the previously aborted visitations. We had very fruitful interactions and mutually debriefed on all issues. He greets his followers and urged all to remain upbeat,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was total drama on Wednesday as a suspected rapist escaped from the Samuel Ilori Magistrates Court in the Agege area of Lagos State.

The suspect was arraigned before the court on Wednesday for allegedly raping a teenager.

It was gathered that the court ordered the suspect to be remanded in prison custody.

The suspected rapist was being processed for remand when he reportedly escaped from the court premises.

A source that spoke with Punch said, “The suspect was brought to court by the police and he was remanded.

“He had been taken to a holding cell by the police when it was discovered that he had not been properly processed.

“As the police and the prison warders were perfecting the arrangement, he used the opportunity to jump on a vehicle from where he scaled the court fence and escaped.”
