Biafran separatist sues Nigeria asking to be freed, allowed to go to UK

YENAGOA, Nigeria, Sept 8  - The detained leader of a separatist group in Nigeria has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was illegally transferred from Kenya to Nigeria and demanding he be freed and allowed to go to Britain, according to media reports citing legal documents.

Nnamdi Kanu, who holds British citizenship, leads the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group which campaigns for secession in part of southeastern Nigeria. Nigerian authorities have labelled the group a terrorist organisation.

Kanu disappeared from Nigeria whilst on bail in 2017 after spending two years in jail. He was re-arrested in June this year and is in Abuja facing trial for treason and other charges. read more

In a lawsuit against the Nigerian government and security services, filed in a court in southeastern Abia State, Kanu's lawyers alleged a series of violations of his fundamental rights, according to reports from several Nigerian media outlets.

It said Kanu should be "repatriated" to Britain and that if Nigeria wanted to detain him it should make an extradition request to the British authorities.

The Abia court confirmed a suit had been filed and a hearing was scheduled for Sept. 21.

In an email, a UK government spokesman said it was working to secure consular access to a British national detained in Nigeria.

"We are in regular contact with the Nigerian authorities and remain in contact with his family and legal representatives," the email said.

Britain previously asked Nigeria to explain the circumstances of Kanu's detention. read more

Kanu's detention has roiled the southeast regional homeland of the Igbo ethnic group, which tried to secede in 1967 as the Republic of Biafra, triggering a three-year civil war in which more than a million people died.

IPOB has repeatedly called on people across the southeast to stay at home in protest over Kanu's situation. It scheduled another stay-at-home day for Thursday to protest against a planned visit to the region by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Amnesty International said in August that Nigerian security forces had killed at least 115 people and arbitrarily arrested or tortured scores of others as part of their crackdown on IPOB. Nigeria did not comment on the allegations. read more

Ex-Radio Biafra Host, Simon Ekpa Tackles IPOB Over Suspension

Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria, and afterwards, Ekpa, a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Finland, had been appointed to disseminate information concerning the Biafran struggle pending the freedom of his principal.

Simon Ekpa, self-styled disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has finally reacted to his suspension by the separatist group from featuring on Radio Biafra.

Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria, and afterwards, Ekpa, a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Finland, had been appointed to disseminate information concerning the Biafran struggle pending the freedom of his principal.

But on August 21, IPOB suspended Ekpa stating that he was not a registered member of the separatist group in Finland.

He was also suspended from announcing on Biafra platforms.

Reacting, Ekpa, who was regarded by Nigerians as more dangerous than Nnamdi Kanu, linked his suspension and disownment to the absence of the IPOB leader who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Service.

In a recent tweet on his official Twitter handle, Ekpa lamented that those behind his suspension kept silent when he was announcing activities of the group prior to Kanu’s rearrest.

The tweet reads, “I will announce fundraising for ESN, announce protest, announce zoom meeting of IPOB when Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had his freedom.

“Almost all fundraising of IPOB families across the globe was announced by me, flyers posted by me. But in the absence of MNK, some ‘efulefu’ are talking trash.”

Flag on Nigerian president’s car symbolises chief commander, not Biafra separatist group

Footage of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy has been circulated on social media with claims that it shows the African leader acknowledging the Biafran state by displaying the separatist flag on his car during a recent visit to Nigeria’s southern Imo state. The claim is false; the flag in question is one of the official presidential flags that recognises the commander-in-chief of the country’s armed forces.

Social media monitoring tool CrowdTangle revealed that the claim was largely circulated online by pro-Biafran accounts on September 9, 2021, the same day Buhari visited Imo state, where separatist tensions and attacks on police have been on the rise.

“Biafra flag spotted on Bughari’s Land Cruiser today in Imo State (sic),” reads the caption on a Facebook post featuring the video, which has been shared more than 1,500 times since Buhari’s visit.

The video’s voiceover claims that the president mounted both the Nigerian and Biafran flags as well as the Nigerian Coat of Arms on his car.

The same 23-second video footage was also shared on Twitter with a claim that Buhari had “finally accepted the restoration of Biafra.”

Buhari in Imo

Buhari’s visit to Imo came two months after southeast Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu was arrested overseas and brought back to Nigeria to face trial.

Imo is in Nigeria’s southeast region where the Igbo ethnic group largely resides. The state has been the battleground for pro-Biafra Eastern Security Network, the militia arm of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) group that seeks independence from Nigeria for the Igbo people.

Biafran flag

The Republic of Biafra was formed following a unilateral declaration of independence from Nigeria in 1967, a move that resulted in a civil war that lasted for two-and-a-half years and claimed at least a million lives.

Although the Biafran state ceased to exist in 1970, calls for secession over alleged marginalisation still continue, with IPOB supporters regularly flying the Biafran flag during demonstrations.

The flag of the former Republic of Biafra has three horizontal bands in red, black and green. In the centre, it features a golden rising sun atop a horizontal line.

In reality, none of the flags displayed on the presidential car belongs to the separatist group. AFP Fact Check examined the two flags mounted on either side of Buhari’s car and found that they are actually Nigeria’s national flag and that of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Golden rising sun not visible

In the Facebook video, three colours — red, black and green — are visible on the flag flying on the left-hand side of Buhari’s car. Although the arrangement of the colours is similar to the Biafran flag, the black band does not feature a rising sun.

AFP Fact Check found a high-quality video of Buhari’s visit live-streamed on Facebook by the Pidgin service of the BBC. The live broadcast shows Buhari’s convoy leaving the government house in Imo’s capital Owerri.

Buhari’s Toyota Land Cruiser can be seen 39 seconds into the video. It has the Nigerian coat of arms as its license plate and two flags placed on either side of the car, between the vehicle's fender and the bonnet.

The official state’s car

On the vehicle’s right-hand side is Nigeria’s national flag featuring two horizontal green bands with a white one in the middle, and on the left is another flag with four horizontal bands — red, black, white, and green.

This four-coloured flag represents the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces who is also the president.

Placing the two flags in this manner or placing them behind the president’s seat is typical during official presidential outings, as shown below in an AFP photo of Buhari during a cabinet meeting.

AFP Fact Check previously debunked a similar claim purporting that the flag of an Islamist group was hoisted at the headquarters of Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency.

Obasanjo tells Buhari what to do with Nnamdi Kanu

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said President Muhammadu Buhari must meet with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, before the ongoing crisis gets out of hand.

Talking to Newsweek, Obasanjo, who as president met with Niger Delta militant leaders in 2006 to stop attacks on oil installations, said: “I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it.

“I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.”

He said the Army’s “heavy boot” response to pro-Biafra sentiment is “not the solution” and added that the secession craved by IPOB, is not the way forward either.

“We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future. There’s no easy way out,” Obasanjo added.
