Advocates against malnutrition call for action to address stunting, wasting in children

The Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), has called on the Niger State Government to place a priority on nutrition interventions to reduce the rising tide of stunting and wasting among children in the state.

The group made the call during advocacy visits to some Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on Wednesday in Minna.

It said the rate of stunting in Niger is 37percent and very alarming, hence, measures should be taken by the State to stop the trend in the next three years.

“Acute stunting and wasting are the biggest challenges we have in Niger. They are alarming and we must fight to address them so the figures can drop as fast as possible.

The CS-SUNN also decried low priorities and low budget allocation given to issues of nutrition in the state while also calling for an increase and timely release of funds for programs.

“We need the timely release of allocated funds; establishment of Nutrition Information System; priority placement for nutrition services across all Primary Health Centers (PHCs)”.

It also commended the Government for the provision of boreholes at CMAM and SAM sites and strengthening collaboration for effective implementation of nutrition activities.

The team visited Commissioners for Agriculture and Rural Development, Zakari Jinkatoro, Water Resources and Dams Development Yusuf Suleiman, Education represented by the Permanent Secretary, Abubakar Balarabe and the Executive Director, Niger state Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Ibrahim Dangana.

The Commissioners at various times pledged commitments and assured the group of their readiness to help push for the timely release of funds to remedy the situation and achieve the desired results.

Thomas Tuchel names new position Kai Havertz will play in his team

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has named a new position Kai Havertz will feature importantly in his squad this season.

Tuchel also insisted that Havertz’s lack of playing time over the course of the last month has simply been down to his lack of fitness.

The former PSG manager, who has largely opted for a 3-5-2 formation since taking over from Frank Lampard last January, said the 21-year-old would play the number 9 or 10 role because he is very comfortable in high positions.

“Since I have arrived, the only thing that kept Kai Havertz from making a big impact is his injury, nothing else,” Chelsea’s official website quoted Tuchel as saying ahead of the Blues’ clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

“He is a unique player. It is not so clear where he needs to settle. Does he need to settle on one special position? Or is he kind of a hybrid player? Today, I would say he’s in between a nine and a 10, something in between.

“He is very comfortable in the box; he’s very comfortable in high positions, he’s very good at offensive headers, he has good timing to arrive in the box, good finishing, good composure in the box, around the box, and very comfortable in high positions so between nine and 10.”

The House of Representatives has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to increase safety standards at recreational centers in the FCT.

The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Kabir Idris on Wednesday during plenary.

Idris, in his motion, noted that such safety measures will prevent preventable deaths such as the one that claimed the life of 10 years old, Master Khalifah Suleiman at an amusement park in the FCT.

According to Idris, Suleiman died due to non-compliance with safety measures by the operators of the park.

Reacting to the motion, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila expressed sadness at the tragic death of the young man.

The motion was taken with an amendment to extend the scope of the safety standards to all government establishments.

BIAFRA : Leader can even be called upon to come, rule again after losing election – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, has given reason a politician could be called to come back to lead the people after losing an election.

Recall that Jonathan lost his second term bid to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

According to the former Nigerian leader, the way leaders are perceived while in office can play a major role in their political career.

Jonathan stated this on Wednesday when he met the representatives of political parties from The Gambia at the closing of a two-day consultative retreat for political parties.

He charged African leaders to always pay attention to the way the majority of perceive them and their policies while in office.

He said for this reason, even after they lose elections, they can be called back to rule again by popular demand.

“Whatever a leader is doing, he needs to understand the fact that the perception of his policies and decisions would be a critical factor to be considered because he is there for the people,” Dr. Jonathan said.

“A leader can be doing all the right things to be done for nation-building, but if the perception among the people does not match what he is doing, then he can never go very far in politics

“But when a leader is doing his best for his people and the perception is right, he might even lose an election due to misunderstanding, but when the perception is right, he can even be called upon to come and rule again .”
