BIAFRA NEWS : Igbo People In US Military Petition UK Prime Minister Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

AVID’s call is contained in a congratulatory letter group sent to the Prime Minister on his July 5, 2024 general election victory.

Nigerians of South-East descent in United States of America’s military under the umbrella of the American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), have called on the newly elected UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to urgently intervene regarding the detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigerian government.

AVID, a not-for-profit organisation comprising citizens of the United States of Igbo ancestry who have served or are currently serving in various branches of the US Armed Forces, urged the UK Prime Minister to expedite a thorough review of Kanu’s case and assist in securing his release him from detention.

The letter dated July 19, 2024 and signed by AVID President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia and the Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, pointed out how the Department of State Services (DSS) earlier denied Kanu access to his doctor after his special counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, raised an alarm over his deteriorating health condition.

Part of the letter reads, “The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) wishes to congratulate you and the people of United Kingdom (UK) on your July 5, 2024 successful general elections. Your victory as the new Prime Minister is remarkable and timely.

“We appreciate your forward-reasoning stance on British imperialism and its impact on Africa with particular reference to Nigeria.

“We know your leadership would be a great success because of your broad scope and depth of knowledge on global affairs as well as your willingness to bring transformational changes.

“We bring to your notice the illegal extraordinary rendition of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, a political activist and British citizen by the Nigeria government from Nairobi Kenya to Nigeria.

“Since 2021, Mr. Kanu has been on isolated detention in Nigeria Department of State Security Services (DSS) because he requested for referendum to create the Nation of Biafra out of the present-day Nigeria.

“Nnamdi Kanu has significant health problems and he is not receiving adequate healthcare.

“We need you to expedite a thorough review of this case and help release Nnamdi Kanu from Nigerian dungeon.

“AVID is knee-deep in support of democratic process everywhere. A call for referendum is not a call for war or violence.

“We have high hope that you will set this British citizen free from the clutches of cruel and inhumane treatment meted out to Mr. Kanu by the Nigeria government.”

IPOB: The Nigerian Civil War, commonly known as the Biafran War

THE HISTORY OF BIAFRA AND NIGERIA WAR  Israel, Nigeria and the Biafra civil war    The Nigerian Civil War , commonly known as the Biafran War (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970), was a war fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over the lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta played a vital strategic role. Within a year, the Federal Government troops surrounded Biafra, capturing coastal oil facilities and the city of Port Harcourt. The blockade imp...
