BIAFRA NEWS : Biafra agitation a spirit, beyond Nnamdi Kanu, Ekpa – Lawyer, Idam

An activist lawyer, Madubuachi Idam on Saturday said the agitation for Biafra is beyond Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and self-acclaimed Biafra Prime Minister, Simon Ekpa.

Idam said the agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra is a spirit that resonates in every Igbo man.

Speaking with  Idam said a lot of people in Nigeria and the South East might not be comfortable with Kanu and Ekpa’s style of agitation, but I think their message is against marginalisation.

Kanu has been locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS, since June 2021 when he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria.

While in detention, insecurity in the South-east has escalated with gunmen on the prowl.

Commenting on the agitation, Idam said: “The agitation for Biafra has always been beyond Kanu and Simon Ekpa.

“The agitation for the emancipation of Biafra has always been a spirit in every Igbo man.

“It does not rest within Kanu and Ekpa alone, it’s a spirit that lives in every Igbo man, no tribe is comfortable with marginalization and I believe that is the simple issue here. You can see that the detention of Kanu has not solved any problem in either the South East or in other parts of Nigeria. The reason I feel that his detention is totally needless and has not served any peaceful purpose to the people of Southeast.

“The Nigerian government might not be comfortable with Kanu’s style but he does not deserve the continued detention because it has not served any security purpose to the government either.

“The Government should consider his release as a good option that will be beneficial to it and project the image of President Tinubu in a sterling light because especially as Mr. Kanu has demonstrated that he’s against the killings and insecurity in the South East, he has written letters and also spoken in the open court preaching peace even while still in custody of the state.

“The agitation has always been beyond these two and I must tell you the agitation can hardly die, therefore, the government has to seize the opportunity he has requested for dialogue.”

The Abuja-based constitutional lawyer charged the Nigerian government to ensure an inclusive government.

He noted that Biafra agitation was due to marginalization of the Southeast.

Idam said: “The Nigerian state must ensure an inclusive government because some of us are clamouring for that. Whatever is sauce for Adamu and Funsho must not be bitter for Okereke.

“The Igbos are saying that they are marginalized. So, why will the state not look at their yearnings, knowing that if there are evenly included in the state’s affair, some of these agitations will die a natural death”

“I must encourage the Nigerian state to toe the line of negotiation and stop heating the polity through the continued detention and protracted trial of Mr. Kanu”
