The group, however, said its major demand was for a referendum to decide whether “Biafra” would continue to be part of Nigeria or not. He said, “Nigeria government must bear one thing in mind, IPOB is not fighting restructuring. We are not against restructuring but our demand is not restructuring. “Our demand is restoration of Biafra State. All we need is a date for referendum to decide whether or not we want to continue with this forced marriage (Nigeria). “Those who think Nigeria is ready for restructuring may have to think again.   Nigeria’s security personnel successfully dispersed suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who hoisted the Biafra flag at ‘Welcome to Bakassi’, the entry route to the Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State. The IPOB men were reported to have attacked a handful of security men who were stationed at the entry point and also harassed residents of the area on Wednesday.   The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said defection of Dr Nnamdi Azikwe, Nigeria’s first President from the defunct Biafra Republic in August 1968 helped weaken the agitation of the secessionists. The late Odumegwu Ojukwu had on May 30, 1967 declared that the eastern region is breaking away from Nigeria as the Republic of Biafra. The declaration however resulted in a war between soldiers of the Nigerian government and Biafra secessionists, otherwise called the Nigerian civil war. The civil war ended in 1970 after the secessionist surrendered and returned to be part of Nigeria.
