Seven die, others hospitalised as Taraba confirms cholera outbreak

  Dr. Innocent Vakkai, the Commission of Health, Taraba State, has admitted that the state has recorded a cholera outbreak. The incident, which occurred in Tella town, Gassol Local Government Council, was said to have led to the death of seven persons, leaving several others hospitalized. Confirming the incident today in Jalingo, a team of medical officers, according to him, have been drafted to the community to investigate the reported cases. Vakkai said the state government has put in place mechanisms to halt the disease from spilling over to other parts of the state.  had earlier reported the indiscriminate dumping of garbage in the streets, a situation which our correspondent observed could lead to outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases. Fani-Kayode linked Yusuf’s accident to Biafra struggle, called Buhari ‘Pharaoh’

Real Madrid insert €1bn release clause in Valverde’s new contract

  Federico Valverde has put pen to paper on a contract extension at Real Madrid, with the LaLiga club including a €1billion release clause in the new deal, according to Goal. Valverde has spent the last six years with Los Blancos, having initially been snapped up from Penarol as a teenager in 2016. The 23-year-old has established himself as a key member of the squad and he has now been handed a bumper new deal. Valverde was already tied to Real until 2025, but has now agreed to renew that agreement by two more years. In addition to being given a significant pay rise, the Uruguay international has also seen his original €500m (£428m/$527m) release clause doubled, with an official announcement of the contract expected later on Tuesday.

NEWS UPDATE : Nigerian Defence Academy confirms bandits’ attack, officers’ murder

  The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has confirmed Tuesday’s   security breach. A large number of bandits attacked the NDA campus in Afaka, Kaduna State, around 1:30am. Lieutenant Commander Wulah and Flight Lieutenant CM Okoronkwo were shot dead. Another officer, Major Datong was kidnapped while second Lieutenant Onah sustained gunshot wounds. He is receiving treatment. In a statement made available to , Major Bashir Muhd Jajira, NDA Public Relations Officer said, “we lost two personnel and one was abducted”. The spokesman disclosed that the bandits gained access into the residential area of the Academy in Afaka. He said the NDA, in collaboration with the 1 Division Nigerian Army, Air Training Command and other security agencies in Kaduna, have commenced pursuit of the assailants. “The NDA community and Cadets are safe in the Academy. We assure the general public that these unknown gunmen would soon be apprehended and the abducted personnel rescued”, Jajira added.

Court strikes out DSS suit seeking further detention of Igboho’s aides

  Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a motion filed by the Department of State Service, DSS, seeking further detention of four out of the 12 aides of Yoruba secessionist leader, Sunday Igboho. The motion was thrown out by the Judge on Tuesday following its dramatic withdrawal by counsel to the DSS, Mr Idowu Awo. At the resumption of the matter, when the motion was to be heard, DSS lawyer stunned the court when he announced his decision not to go ahead with the matter. Rather than going ahead with the motion, the counsel informed the court that he had filed a notice of appeal against the bail granted to the four out of the 12 detainees and that he would prefer to pursue the appeal at the Court of Appeal. Justice Egwuatu subsequently struck out the motion following the no objection by the detainee’s lawyer, Mr Sunday Adebayo. Details later…
