Tension in Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi over IPOB’s vow to shut down southeast, remove Nigeria flags

The annual Independence Day celebration may take a new dimension this year in some parts of the country particularly the Southeastern region

following the vow by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB to shut down activities in solidarity with its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu for weeks has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS after he was arrested in a neighbouring African country.

recalls that the secessionists’ group had through a statement on Saturday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful vowed to enforce a sit-at-home in the entire region on October 1st, saying there would be operation no Nigerian flag in Biafra land.

According to the statements, residents of the region were warned to steer clear of the streets as there would be no movements.

The statement reads in part: “IPOB has declared 1st of October 2021 total shutdown in Biafra land as a sign of our rejection of the evil construct called Nigeria and there shall be no movement in Biafra land on this day.

“Everybody must strictly adhere to this directive from IPOB leadership, we want to let the world know that Biafraland is not Nigeria and shall not be. Don’t say I don’t know, a word is enough for the wise.”

Also on Tuesday, the separatist group called on agitators of Oduduwa Republic, and Middle Belt and other allegedly “oppressed tribes” in the country to join in shutting down Nigeria on October 1.

Emma Powerful said, “Following our earlier declaration of October 1st sit at home order issued by the leadership of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), all Nigerian oppressed tribes should reject the Nigerian government’s evil agenda against the indigenous peoples.

“We, the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), request our brothers and sisters in Oduduwa republic and Middle Belt who suffer a similar fate with us to join hands in sympathy protest.

reports that the moves and threats have triggered tension in many parts of the region as shops, offices began to shut down about 12 hours before Independence Day.

A trader in the popular Onitsha market, Emeka Andrew, told DAILY POST that there was panic buying of food and other essential items on Thursday as there would be no movement on Friday (Independence Day).

He said, “Nobody is coming out tomorrow because no one wants to die. We all saw what happened in the previous time when such declarations were made by the IPOB so we are all doing everything possible to prevent that. I’m closing my shop anything 4pm.

“On a normal note, even on Christmas Day, we are always here but this has to do with life and death and some of us have chosen life. Whatever you don’t buy today, you may not get it until next week. Who knows what would still happen on Monday?”

Similarly, a corps member who identified herself as Ene, serving in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state, expressed fear of attack, saying she has resolved to suspend all activities and stay-at-home.

“I don’t want any story that touch, so I have cancelled all my usual activities pending when normalcy return to the state”.

However, speaking with , the state’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenganyia T. Anthony said the command has established an intensive patrol and surveillance to ensure peace and order in the state on Independence Day.

He said, “We have extended our patrol and for us, we are concentrating on our primary duties which include the protection of lives and properties. So there is intensive patrol and surveillance going on”.

In the same vein, a civil servant in Ebonyi State who preferred not to be mentioned in print for fear of victimization told  that there is “fear in the land” as the government prepares for the Independence celebration.

“Although Ebonyi State is not like other parts of the region, there is fear in the state currently. Some unscrupulous persons are taking advantage of the peace in this place to penetrate and unleash havoc”.

But the spokesperson of the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Odah Loveth told  correspondent on phone, that there is calm everywhere, stressing that “everyone is going about his or her businesses in the state”.

She said, “There is nothing like the activities of IPOB in Ebonyi and we are not going to allow that. The commissioner of police has assured adequate security.

“You know that Ebony is going to be 25 years old tomorrow so we are preparing for the jubilee and Nigeria at 61.

“We will not allow anybody to take this Happy moment from us. The public areas will be occupied by us. The police and other security agencies in Ebonyi State will do everything possible to ensure that the state is very peaceful.

“The residents have also promised us that they will comply with the security agencies and that they will report every criminal activity to us”.

’s observation revealed that parts of Imo State particularly the Orlu where the Eastern Security Network wing of the IPOB camps, have been enveloped by tension.

A resident who begged not to be mentioned, said shops and offices are being shut down already as of 4pm on Thursday.

However, Prince Marcillinus Nlemigbo, Imo State chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC who spoke exclusively to  on Thursday, said there is nothing like security change in the state stressing that the Independence Day celebration must hold.

He said there would be movement in all parts of the state tomorrow, stressing that the governor had assured residents of adequate security.

His words,” We felicitate with Imolites and Nigerians in general on this occasion of Nigeria at 61, we wish to reiterate our call for unity as well as political and religious tolerance amongst Nigerians. ”

“It is our common faith that our strength as a nation lies in our diversity. We must continue to respect our plurality and ethnoreligious and political differences to achieve a peaceful and prosperous nation on the sacred foundation of justice, equity and fairness. God bless you all.”

women protest in London, demand Kanu’s release, IPOB

Scores of female members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra based in London have begun a three-day “mega rally” in the United Kingdom.

The women are calling for the release of the embattled IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from the custody of the Department of State Service, according to a video posted by a Twitter user, @Emekannaoma.

It was captioned, “IPOB women #FreeNnamdiKanu 3 days London mega rally. They are calling for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the leader of IPOB who was abducted in Kenya by Nigeria govt with the help of Kenyan govt, extraordinary renditioned to Nigeria against his will.”

In the video, the women are seen waving the Biafran flag and raising photo frames of Kanu with several inscriptions such as ‘Free Kanu, Free Biafra’ as they chanted what they termed their “ritual” amidst intermittent jingling of bells.

Kanu, 54, was born on September 25, 1967, at Afaraukwu, Abia State.

The secessionist leader is a holder of Nigerian and British passports. He had earlier jumped bail in June 2018 before leaving for the United Kingdom though he said that he fled because his life was no longer safe in Nigeria.

After about three years abroad, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), at a press briefing in Abuja on June 29, 2021, announced that the IPOB leader was re-arrested in a foreign country and extradited to Nigeria.

Kanu’s Lead Counsel, Ejiofor Ifeanyi, had said the IPOB leader was re-arrested in Kenya and whisked to Nigeria.

Upon his re-arrest and extradition in June 2021, he was re-arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako for terrorism-related charges and has since been remanded in the DSS custody in Abuja.

Justice Nyako had adjourned the trial of Kanu to October 21, 2021, for continuation of hearing.

However, through his lawyers, Kanu had dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kenyan Government to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, over the alleged violation of his fundamental human rights by the two governments.

The IPOB leader had also approached a High Court of Abia State to challenge the alleged infringement on his fundamental rights by the Nigerian government.

He had asked the court to award him N5bn as damages for the breach of his fundamental human rights which began with the 2017 extrajudicial attempt on his life in Abia, his involuntary flight to safety/exile, his abduction in Kenya, and his extradition to Nigeria.

The court had adjourned the hearing of the case to October 7, 2021.

Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor had drawn some inspiration from the September 17, 2021 fundamental rights judgment of the Oyo State High Court in favour of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) and against the Federal Government.

Ejimakor said, “The Oyo State High Court judgment in Igboho’s case (which is similar to Kanu) restates the locus classicus on the wide jurisdiction of State High Courts when it comes to enforcement of the fundamental rights stipulated under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter.”

Kanu’s followers in Nigeria had declared several sit-at-home orders in the South-East to protest his arrest and demand his release from the custody of the secret police.

The sit-at-home orders have been said to cripple economic activities in Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi, especially on Mondays.

PDP office will not stand in S/East if Igbos are denied presidential ticket – Ohanaeze youths

The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has

warned the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to consider an Igbo as the party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election or face the wrath of the youths.

The group vowed that if PDP failed to cede their presidential ticket to an Igbo candidate, none of their offices will stand in Igboland nor flag will be seen flying in the region.

It vowed that youths would not hesitate to engage in a pitched battle with the party should their demand be rebuffed.

The council stated this through its National President, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, on Thursday in a release made available to DAILY POST in Owerri, Imo State.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the only way PDP could reciprocate Ndigbo’s 24-year relentless sacrifice was to willingly give its presidential ticket to them, vowing that the youths would not hesitate to engage in a pitched battle with the party should their demand be rebuffed.

Ndigbo is the only tribe that has served PDP since 1999, the Igbo bloc vote was given in 1999-2003 to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the same to President Musa Y’aradua in 2007and Goodluck Jonathan in 2011-2015.

The group sent a stern warning to the conveners of the purported Northern Governors Forum to desist from making utterances capable of disintegrating the country.

The release read, “Without mincing words that, the forum, Northern Governors was inexistent, describing them as few ‘Fulani political power mongers’ who want to drag the Middle-belt into their illusion for them to produce Nigeria president in 2023.

“It’s idiotic to include Taraba, Benue, Nassarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kogi, Kaduna, Kwara etc that have had a fair share of Fulani herdsmen killing, banditry and kidnapping in their so-called imaginary 2023 presidential dream.

“With the quest of Fulani political cabal to retain power in 2023, if they dare it, it’s an indication that Nigeria at 61 this year will be the last independent day the entity called Nigeria will celebrate.”

IPOB Declares Sit-At-Home On Independence Day, Ban Nigerian Flag In Southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared October 1, a day that marks Nigeria’s independence from Britain, a sit-at-home.

Naija News reports that this was made known on Saturday in a statement by the groups spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

The outlawed pro-Biafra group also placed a ban on the Nigerian flag across the South-East zone of the country.

He said, “IPOB has declared 1st of October 2021 total shutdown in Biafra land as a sign of our rejection of the evil construct called Nigeria and there shall be no movement in Biafra land on this day.

“Also, IPOB has declared from today 25th September 2021 that all Nigerian flag mounted anywhere in Biafra land must be brought down, Banks exceptional. IPOB leadership will communicate to banks directly and give them reason they must peacefully bring down Nigeria flag in their banking premises before we do it ourselves in our own way.

“In line with the Memorandum of Understanding and alliance between Ambazonia and Biafra nations, we wish to ask Biafrans to support and celebrate Ambazonia Independence Anniversary on October 1st 2021.

“We, therefore, urge world leaders to use the opportunity of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly meeting to discuss the sufferings of the two persecuted nations of Biafra and Ambazonia. Our people have suffered enough in the hands of our oppressors who are in bed with terrorists but derive pleasure in crushing peaceful agitators instead of addressing our genuine concerns.”
