There was a resurgence of violence in the Southeast yesterday, after weeks of respite in killings and attacks on government and security facilities.

In Anambra State, unidentified gunmen shot and killed three policemen at a checkpoint in the commercial city of Onitsha. According to a source, the incident happened around 10:00 a.m. in Ukaegbu/Oraifite Street, Ezeiweka, Awada area of Onitsha.

It was gathered that the gunmen believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), got to the checkpoint in a white Sienna bus and took the policemen unawares as they shot and killed their victims.

Also, stray bullets from the gunmen killed a tricyclist and a young man close to the scene.

“The operational vehicle of the cops was also set ablaze. The incident forced many residents of the area to run for cover, while others were locked indoors,” an eyewitness said.

The source added that immediately after the incident, residents and motorists found it difficult to gain access to their houses as security operatives cordoned off the area. Soldiers were drafted to the scene to control movement.

The Igbo, the predominant nationality in the Southeast region, have long been complaining of being marginalised economically and politically since the Civil War ended in 1970. The Biafra agitation has led to killings and attacks in the region, with gunmen frequently targeting police and other security agencies in deadly assaults.

The latest killing is happening 10 days after President Muhammadu Buhari paid a surprise visit to Imo State, considered to be the hub of IPOB’s operations in the region. During the visit, President Buhari, in a rare reconciliatory tone, praised the Igbo for their enterprising spirit.

Reacting, the Anambra State Police Command said it has intensified efforts aimed at fishing out the hoodlums, who attacked a police patrol vehicle along Ezeiweka road, Awada. The Command confirmed that one policeman lost his life, while others sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said the attackers set the patrol vehicle ablaze.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that around 9:30a.m, yesterday, the attackers drove in an ash coloured Sienna vehicle and started shooting at the patrol vehicle along Ukegbu junction, Ezeiweka road. Unfortunately, during the exchange of gunfire, one police inspector paid the supreme price and some sustained gunshot injuries. In a bid to escape the police responding team, the hoodlums set the patrol vehicle ablaze.”

Tochukwu assured residents that the command is not deterred with the incident but is more committed in delivering in its mandate on protection of life and property.

IN another development, what appears to be an attack on facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives in the Southeast resurfaced as the office of the commission in Awgu Council of Enugu State was set on fire by unknown persons. This is as some persons who attended a political gathering in Enugu West Senatorial District of the state were attacked and molested by gunmen who threatened that no election would hold in any part of Biafra land come 2023.

Sources revealed that the arsonists climbed through the perimeter fence to gain access into the commission’s office in Awgu. The fire, which started in the early hours of Sunday, did substantial damage to INEC office, even as the quick response of the fire service helped to salvage the situation.

This appears to be the resurgence of attacks on INEC offices, which many believe had stopped after the state’s headquarters in Enugu urban and some local councils like Udenu and Igboetiti were torched.

In a video that went viral yesterday, the gunmen who attacked the Enugu West political meeting drove into the venue in a mini-bus and were seen shooting repeatedly as participants fled for their lives with some sustaining injuries in the process.

A few men, who could not escape at the time of the invasion, were captured and asked to lie down in the mud as some women were heard wailing. They were beaten, molested and harassed amid allegations that they were trying to “bring back Fulani” into Enugu West.

The heavily armed attackers were not masked but they carefully ensured that their faces did not appear in the video so as not to be identified. In the 4:50 minutes video, it could be seen that vehicles and motorbikes were smashed by the gunmen, who threatened to deal with anyone organising a political gathering in Biafra land.

“You want to bring Fulani into our place? We chased them away and you want to bring them back. What are you doing here? You are here for party politics like you do every four years. Which party?

“Don’t you like how we chased away the Fulanis? Why do you want to bring them back? You want to bring problem into Enugu West again. We have asked you people to stop these party campaigns you are doing on our land. You are all here for party campaigns. You are the ones destroying Enugu West. Thunder will fire you. Say yes sir!” the gunmen said in different voices.

When asked what should be their punishment if they tried to organise another political gathering, one of the men said, “kill me.”
Confirming the attack on its office, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, said the fire resulted in extensive damage to the stores section, where election materials were kept.

A statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, revealed that the attack was the first since the last attack on the Commission’s facilities in May.

He said: “Fortunately, all movable election materials had been evacuated following recent attacks on our offices in the state. There are no casualties in the incident. The identity or motives of attackers are unknown, while the incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.

“The Commission appreciates the prompt response of the security agencies, comprising the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as well the Enugu State Fire Service and the Awgu Local Government Neighbourhood Watch.”

MEANWHILE, courts in Imo would be shut down from today (Monday) to Wednesday in protest against the killing of Darlington Odume, who, until his death, was the Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Orlu branch. This was disclosed by the NBA, Orlu branch chairman, Mr. Celestine Agbodike, yesterday.

Odume, popularly known as Omekagu, was gruesomely murdered by suspected assailants in front of a supermarket at Amaifeke Orlu, last week.

Agbodike said: “All judicial activities across the state are expected to be put on hold until the three days protest elapse.”
He described the killing as shocking, condemnable, and a heinous crime against the entire bar and bench in the state.

According to him, the late Omekagu was a social crusader and fearless activist who championed many positive courses for the good of the NBA and humanity.

“We are shutting down all courts in the state from Monday to Wednesday. We have the permission of the Acting Chief Judge of the state on this. We are using this protest to once again call on the government to put a stop to this killings of innocent citizens in the state, particularly here in Orlu,” he said.

At least, 26 security officials, including soldiers and police officers were killed by armed non-state actors across Nigeria in the past two weeks. Also, about 11 civilians, including traditional rulers and clerics were killed in separate attacks. The figures collated were compiled from media reports of such killings across the country.

Of the 26 security officials, 13 were soldiers and five were police officers, while the others belonged to other paramilitary and security agencies including the NSCDC and the correctional service.

The figures for the two weeks in view (September 5 to 18) signify an increase in the figures compared to the previous week where only six killings by non-state actors were reported in the media across the country.

The causes of the killings vary and include terrorist attacks, banditry, attacks by separatists, communal clashes and ethno-religious crises.

BIAFRA NEWS : Attack on Enugu Political Meeting: IPOB should redeem its image – Ohanaeze

 

The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has condemned the weekend attack launched on a political meeting at Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State by unknown gunmen.

 reported that the gunmen stormed the venue of the political meeting and sent party members running for their lives.

They claimed to be members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, an arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Reacting to the development, the President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said so many atrocities were now being committed with the name of ESN and IPOB.

He said it was high time the IPOB leadership rose to the occasion and fished out those using its identity to perpetrate criminal activities.

Okwu said, “we were alarmed over the reported attack on a ward meeting by gunmen who said they were members of ESN. This incident came to us as a shock because the ESN is not known to have turned the fight against her own people.

“We find it strange that people who claimed to be of Igbo extraction could storm a political meeting and unleash such mayhem on their fellow Igbo men and women. It is totally unacceptable.

“When the ESN was formed, it was said to be a tool to combat killer Fulani herdsmen; how suddenly did our fellow Igbos become killer herdsmen that the war has now turned against them?”

The OYC President said there were indications that “people are now using ESN to settle scores and this is why we are calling on IPOB to rise to the occasion, it must fish out those perpetrating evil.

“The people behind this are not helping Nnamdi Kanu; they are doing everything to demonize IPOB and the sole aim is to keep Nnamdi perpetually in custody.”

While cautioning on the dangers of Ndigbo fighting among themselves, Okwu said “the IPOB should not fold its hands and watch people desecrate its name. It must go the extra mile to fish out those using its name to commit atrocities. We can’t destroy our place on the guise of fighting enemies. A house divided against itself can never stand.

“This is why there is an urgent need for the IPOB to convince Ndigbo that it has no hand in this and many other similar incidents.”

BIAFRA NEWS : Obadiah Mailafia sought forgiveness from Igbos over Biafra war – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer

 Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has reacted to the death of Obadiah Mailafia, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Ejiofor said Mailafia sought for forgiveness, peace and reconciliation for what Nigeria did to the Igbo during the Biafra civil war.

He also disclosed that the former presidential candidate wanted the Middle belt to apologize to the Igbo over their role during the Biafra war.

In a series of tweets, Ejiofor wrote: “The sad news of the sudden demise of Dr Mailafia hit me with a great shock.I could not believe it until I made calls to close contacts who confirmed it was true. Hmmmm, what is life but fleeting moments? Today we’re here, tomorrow we’re no more.

“Permit me to say that Dr.Mailafia is a fine gentleman who stood on the side of truth. He was well read and a man of the letters who was bold to persuade the people of the middle belt to tender an apology to the Igbos for the role they played against the Biafrans during the civil war.

“It was a horrible experience for the people of the South East, the massacre is better imagined than experienced.Our people lost the battle after three years due to the roles played by her neighbours.

“Torture,rape,starvation,illness and diseases ravaged our people and our neighbours never lifted a finger to help.They rather joined forces with the oppressors and unleashed terror on our land.

“It is now history, yet that history is being subdued so that present and future generations are not aware of the evil done to their forefathers. Yet, Dr.Mailafia,even though of the Northern extract stood out and acknowledged the ills done to the igbos and sought for forgiveness,peace and reconciliation.

“That is the true example of sportsmanship. It’s often said that good people don’t last.

“A rare gem is lost! We cannot question God because He alone gives and takes when it pleases him.”

NEWS : How popular pastors come to our shrine to get power – Wife of Anambra chief priest

 

Lolo Ebelechukwu Obi, wife of the chief priest, Idemili Cultural Centre, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chief Ralph Ndidi Obi has revealed how pastors patronize her husband for powers.

In an interview with BBC pidgin, the young lady who got married to the chief priest eight years ago, said some popular pastors usually visit her husband seeking for spiritual power to enable them perform miracles in their churches.

She revealed that prior to her marriage with the chief priest, she was a prayer warrior in church, stressing that she was dismayed when she saw the secret of some ‘men of God’ who display power in church.

“After getting married to my husband, some pastors that I cannot even mention, I started seeing them here and my husband, the chief priest, usually works for them.

“They used to come to him for power but when they return to their church, they will begin to cast the water spirit. We deliver people from spiritual husbands and wives. When you come to us, we just settle the spirit and you will go and marry your spouse”, she stated.

According to her, there is nothing wrong with being a traditional worshipper, saying Nigerians’ perception of the religion was wrong.

“When I was a prayer warrior in church, I used to see traditional worshippers as bad people but after marrying my husband, I found out that it is not even a bad thing”, she added.
