2023 : Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB’s actions affecting Igbos chances of producing Nigeria’s president – Ohanaeze
The Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has admitted that the agitations of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, would affect the chances of the Southeast producing a Nigerian president in 2023.
Dimm Uche Okwukwu, Deputy President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said Kanu’s directive that his followers should not participate in voters registration and destroy their Personal Voters Card, PVCs, would jeopardize the chance of the Igbo producing a Nigerian president.
Speaking exclusively with DAILY POST, Okwukwu, urged Nigerians not to mirror Igbos from the eye of Kanu and IPOB.
Biafra: Why Igbos should not leave Nigeria – Buhari
Okwukwu maintained that Igbos are peace loving people who are always willing to live in harmony with other Nigerians.
He said Kanu should be ignored because he attacks both Igbo and non-Igbo leaders.
According to Okwukwu: “Marginalization has a way of producing results and you will agree with me that majority of the people are poor and marginalized.
“When you tell them what they want to hear, these poor marginalized people will follow you; but Nnamdi Kanu is not getting it right because he has subscribed to violence as a way and has not limited it to Igbo leaders.
“He has attacked Asiwaju in Lagos, Ekweremadu, Rotimi Amaechi; he has threatened to kill Igbo leaders and governors so he not only attacking outsiders; he is also attacking his Igbo brothers and sisters.
“The point I’m making is that we must consciously take Nnamdi Kanu and put him where he belongs. He is not an Igbo leader and cannot speak for Ndigbo.
“Igbos don’t subscribe to violence, anarchy, or destruction of lives and properties; this is my argument. Igbos are willing to live in harmony with other tribes in Nigeria.
“Igbos are saying 50 years after the war, allow an Igbo man to occupy the Presidency. Jonathan ruled for six years and Nigeria did not disappear; Yorubas have been in power, the North has ruled, now allow the Igbo. If you give them the presidency will they have any other argument tomorrow? Will they say Nigeria is marginalizing them? The answer is no because people will ask they were in the presidency for eight years what did they do with it.
“Kanu’s agitation will certainly to a large extent affect our chances. Nnamdi Kanu’s agitations, pronouncements, actions, omissions and commissions affects us in one way or the other.
“He is preventing voters’ registration in Igbo land, he is asking supporters to destroy their PVC. So, apart from the fact that Nigeria needs us to some extent, they mirror us through Nnamdi Kanu’s actions.
“The outcome of his action is jeopardizing our desire because when you say people should destroy their PVCs and not participate in voters’ registration, it affects us, I won’t deny that in one way or the other.
“However, I’m appealing that nobody should mirror the Igbos through the actions of IPOB.”
Go after bandits, not IPOB, ESN – Anglican Bishop tells Buhari govt
The Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi Anglican Communion, Anambra State, Rt. Rev Ndubisi Obi has urged the Federal Government to focus more on apprehending bandits than tackling the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Eastern Security Network, ESN.
Bishop Obi lamented that the Federal Government allows bandits to go scot-free while deploying its Arsenals against agitators.
He spoke while addressing a press briefing at the Bishop’s court on national issues.
Obi also announced the 9th session of Diocese of Nnewi Anglican Communion Synod, Anambra State, scheduled to kick off on September 2 at St. James Church, Ichi, Ekwusigo Council Area.
The clergyman also accused government officials of creating more problems in the country than ensuring solutions to the country’s challenges.
Obi urged the government to address the country’s challenges in order to stop the agitation.
“When you talk about agitation, what leads to that is when the government of the day is not sensitive to what the people are passing through. Instead of doing the right thing, they do the wrong ones.
“So, the Church cannot but advise on what government should do to stop what brings about the agitation.
“Just look at the way they are handling security issues in this country. I continue to ask myself why the government should send the military to pursue the IPOB and its ESN in Imo State when bandits in Northern Nigeria kidnap school children and students of higher institutions at will. Sometimes they will be more than 100 and are herded into the forest for ransom. And the bandits do these things and go scot-free but every effort is channelled towards the pursuit of agitators,” he said.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari had maintained that IPOB are thieves carrying out acts of terrorism in the Southeast.
Buhari had insisted that the pro-Biafra group was not defending Christians as claimed.

Biafran separatist sues Nigeria asking to be freed, allowed to go to UK
YENAGOA, Nigeria, Sept 8 - The detained leader of a separatist group in Nigeria has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was illegally transferred from Kenya to Nigeria and demanding he be freed and allowed to go to Britain, according to media reports citing legal documents.
Nnamdi Kanu, who holds British citizenship, leads the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group which campaigns for secession in part of southeastern Nigeria. Nigerian authorities have labelled the group a terrorist organisation.
Kanu disappeared from Nigeria whilst on bail in 2017 after spending two years in jail. He was re-arrested in June this year and is in Abuja facing trial for treason and other charges. read more
In a lawsuit against the Nigerian government and security services, filed in a court in southeastern Abia State, Kanu's lawyers alleged a series of violations of his fundamental rights, according to reports from several Nigerian media outlets.
It said Kanu should be "repatriated" to Britain and that if Nigeria wanted to detain him it should make an extradition request to the British authorities.
The Abia court confirmed a suit had been filed and a hearing was scheduled for Sept. 21.
In an email, a UK government spokesman said it was working to secure consular access to a British national detained in Nigeria.
"We are in regular contact with the Nigerian authorities and remain in contact with his family and legal representatives," the email said.
Britain previously asked Nigeria to explain the circumstances of Kanu's detention. read more

Kanu's detention has roiled the southeast regional homeland of the Igbo ethnic group, which tried to secede in 1967 as the Republic of Biafra, triggering a three-year civil war in which more than a million people died.
IPOB has repeatedly called on people across the southeast to stay at home in protest over Kanu's situation. It scheduled another stay-at-home day for Thursday to protest against a planned visit to the region by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amnesty International said in August that Nigerian security forces had killed at least 115 people and arbitrarily arrested or tortured scores of others as part of their crackdown on IPOB. Nigeria did not comment on the allegations. read more
Ex-Radio Biafra Host, Simon Ekpa Tackles IPOB Over Suspension
Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria, and afterwards, Ekpa, a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Finland, had been appointed to disseminate information concerning the Biafran struggle pending the freedom of his principal.
Simon Ekpa, self-styled disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has finally reacted to his suspension by the separatist group from featuring on Radio Biafra.
Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria, and afterwards, Ekpa, a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Finland, had been appointed to disseminate information concerning the Biafran struggle pending the freedom of his principal.
But on August 21, IPOB suspended Ekpa stating that he was not a registered member of the separatist group in Finland.
He was also suspended from announcing on Biafra platforms.
Reacting, Ekpa, who was regarded by Nigerians as more dangerous than Nnamdi Kanu, linked his suspension and disownment to the absence of the IPOB leader who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Service.
In a recent tweet on his official Twitter handle, Ekpa lamented that those behind his suspension kept silent when he was announcing activities of the group prior to Kanu’s rearrest.
The tweet reads, “I will announce fundraising for ESN, announce protest, announce zoom meeting of IPOB when Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had his freedom.
“Almost all fundraising of IPOB families across the globe was announced by me, flyers posted by me. But in the absence of MNK, some ‘efulefu’ are talking trash.”
