Cristiano Ronaldo named ‘greatest player’ in football history

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the “greatest player” in the history of football by his new Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire.

The 36-year-old who has won the Ballon d’Or five times already, made a sensational return to Old Trafford after 12 years.

Maguire is optimistic that Ronaldo will have an influence both on and off the pitch, as the Red Devils fight for trophies this season.

“Yeah, of course, it’s amazing. Obviously, I’m away with England at the moment so my focus is on the game tomorrow but for him to sign back for the club and, for me, he is the greatest player to play the game.

“It’s amazing to have him at the club and I’m sure he’s going to have a huge impact on and off the field, and many players can look and learn and improve, and then, obviously, it’s going to improve our team as well with his goalscoring record.

“So it’s amazing to have him in the club and I’m looking forward to meeting him in a few days,” Maguire said at a press conference ahead of England’s hat-trick of World Cup qualifiers this month.

Trump asked me why I am killing Christians in Nigeria – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed his discussion with the US president, Donald Trump, over the killing of Christians in the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, at the First Year Ministerial Performance Review Retreat of his second term, Buhari noted he is the only African amongst the least developed countries that Trump invited in the White House.

He said the American president asked him to explain why he is killing Christians in Nigeria.

Buhari said: “I believe I was about the only African amongst the least developed countries that Trump invited and when I was in his office, only myself and himself, only God is a witness, he looked at me in the face and said, ‘Why are you killing Christians?’

“I wondered if it were you, I wondered how you will react. I hope what I was feeling inside did not betray me before him. So, I understood it.

“The problem between cattle rearers and farmers has been happening for a long time. And there was climate change and population growth.

“I tried to explain to him that it has nothing to do with ethnicity or religion. It is a cultural thing which respective leaderships failed the nation.”

2023 : Amaechi opens up on ‘deal’ between Buhari, Tinubu

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has reacted to speculations that

President Muhammadu Buhari and former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu had a pact on the 2023 presidency.

The circulation of the claim dates back to the months before the 2015 general elections.

A source hinted that after Tinubu was dropped as All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate to douse opposition to a Muslim-Muslim ticket, a deal on 2023 was agreed with Buhari.

Nigeria’s Southern states and the incumbent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) then accused the APC of an Islamization agenda.

Power brokers rallied, calmed Tinubu and conceded the selection of Buhari’s running mate to him.

Former Lagos Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Yemi Osinbajo was picked ahead of Ekiti Governor, Kayode Fayemi.

Before the 2019 polls, the President was said to have re-assured the Jagaban of Borgu of the ticket.

Weeks later, Tinubu invited Bisi Akande, former Osun Governor and APC first National Chairman to join him on a visit to the Presidential Villa.

Tinubu, it was gathered, asked Buhari to restate his promise which the President allegedly affirmed. It is believed that the meeting took place in January 2018.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Amaechi stated that he was not privy to details of the alleged agreement.

The former Rivers Governor said he was not sure if Buhari and Tinubu held such a private meeting.

He added that as the Director-General of APC Campaign Organisation, he never witnessed such a decision.

“But if there was a private meeting between President Buhari and our leader, Tinubu, I wouldn’t know.

“If it was a public APC meeting and I was not there, then something must be wrong. I was not told that there was an agreement that power should be handed over to Tinubu”, Amaechi added.

Amaechi confessed Buhari govt habours thieves, treasury looters – PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday said Rotimi Amaechi,

Minister of Transportation has confessed to looting in President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

PDP said Amaechi’s recent claim has vindicated its stance that Buhari’s government is a haven of thieves.

Amaechi had over the weekend admitted to quiet stealing in the current government.

He had stated those stealing are doing it quietly because there is now consequences for looting.

Reacting, the former ruling party accused the Federal Government of covering its officials.

In a series of tweets, PDP wrote: “The confession by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, that stealing is going on quietly under the President @MBuhari-led @OfficialAPCNg, vindicates its stand that the @OfficialAPCNg is a haven of thieves and treasury looters.

“The confession also further confirms that the @MBuhari-led @OfficialAPCNg administration has been providing official cover for corrupt officials, who have turned government agencies to cash cows and Automated Teller Machines (ATM) for themselves, their cronies, family members and mistresses.

“The situation as presented by Amaechi shows that ‘quiet stealing’ is a policy of the @OfficialAPCNg administration. This explains why the administration is heavy on propaganda and has failed to prosecute its officials and @OfficialAPCNg leaders openly indicted for corruption, but only resort to “easing out” such thieves with a pat on the wrist.”

Independent National Electoral Commission registration centres in Rivers State: Slow internet connectivity affected voter registration in Rivers – YIAGA

A Civil Society Organization, YIAGA Africa have identified network connectivity as one of the factors that initially affected the ongoing voter

registration exercise in Rivers State.

The CSO members are serving as observers for the exercise in the twenty-three Independent National Electoral Commission registration centres in Rivers State.

The group identified poor network connectivity particularly within the first two weeks of commencement of the in-person registration as part of challenges encountered

The coordinator of the group, Obinna Ebogidi, during an interview in Port Harcourt, however, observed an improvement in accessing the portal and the speed with which it now takes to conclude individual registrations and issuance of slips.

Ebogidi called for support from Nigerians especially public office holders and their supporters to improve the electoral system rather than politicians engaging in actions that would appear to ridicule the process and discourage “interested and potential registrants”.

He further urged politicians to massively engage in voters “sensitization and mobilization” to get their supporters registered and secure their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the upcoming elections.

Ebogodi said, “one issue that was visibly predominant within the first two weeks of our observation was that of slow internet connectivity”.

“Our observations across the state was that it was taking between four and five minutes to attend to individual registrants but as the process continued we observed that it was actually becoming a lot faster, accessibility to the portal was becoming a lot easier and don’t forget that these INEC voters devices is basically new in the process and we had expected that there might one or two issues.

He also noted that the network connectivity issue was not peculiar to Rivers State stressing that the exercise also witnessed the same problem in Abuja.
