CSO calls for thorough investigation into alleged ‘sexual assault’ involving Uniport lecturer, student

A human rights advocacy group, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called on the management of University of Port Harcourt to properly investigate the case of assault involving a lecturer and female student in the university.

The Management of the school had in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Sam Kpenu said a case of assault was reported by a lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures against a female student in the same department of the university.

However, other reports indicate that a UNIPORT lecturer was beaten after his encounter with a female student and allegedly reported to the senate that he was kidnapped.

But the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign in a statement by its National Coordinator, Prince Wiro, said the university should give fair hearing to parties involved in the matter as some other report from course mates of the female student who spoke to them alleged that the lecturer was beaten when he attempted to sexually assault the female student in her off campus room at Aluu during a visit.

The organization urged the university to ensure the witnesses of the lecturer and the female student are considered and allowed to make voluntary statements at the panel investigating the matter, stating that it believes in the capacity of the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill to ensure justice to the parties involved.

Nnamdi Kanu : We’ll ensure his fundamental human rights are respected – Abia govt

The Abia State Government said it is actively monitoring the situation with leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Nnamdi Kanu hailed from Afaraukwu, a community in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

The IPOB leader is currently under trial at a Federal High Court in Abuja and his state of origin has vowed to ensure that his fundamental human rights, as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic, are respected.

In a statement signed by Chief John Okiyi Kalu, Commissioner for Information of the state, Abia said it has remained in touch with “his family members, other relevant persons and institutions, and receive regular updates through them on the situation.”

The State Government, however, kicked against any move by supporters of the secessionist leader to enforce sit-at-home in the State.

The State said that while it would not stop anyone sitting at home for any reason, it would not fold its hands and watch as people are forced against their wish or children stopped from going to schools.

“The Abia State Government is confident that the judiciary will ensure a free and manifestly fair trial for him and others as they remain innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement said.

“We, therefore, wish to call on all citizens and visitors to continue to be law abiding and avoid any act that might lead to a breakdown of law and order.

“While Government will not compel anyone wishing to sit at home for any reason whatsoever not to do so, as citizens have freedom of movement under the extant Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we wish to strongly advice that nobody should also compel or enforce any sit at home order from any non state actor as doing so does not serve any known interests of the people of the state.

“Furthermore, compelling our children to stay away from school can only serve the interests of the yet to be properly identified persons who may not want to see us make progress as a people.

“Similarly, our traders sitting at home at a time they need to work very hard to sustain their families and create wealth especially in this era of COVID-19 impacted global economy will obviously not serve any development interest of our hardworking citizens.

“All law abiding citizens and visitors are therefore called upon to go about their normal businesses without fear of molestation as adequate security has been provided to ensure their safety.

“Parents and guardians are also called upon to ensure that they monitor the activities of their children and wards with a view to ensuring that they do not engage in unlawful activities that will put them in harm’s way. “

Christians storm demolished EYN church, pass vote of no confidence on CAN chairman

Over 50 pastors and thousands of youth groups mostly from different denominational Churches on Friday converged at the demolished site of Local Church of Brethren, LCB, under Ekkliziyan Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), a.k.a Church of Brethren Maduganari ward in Borno State to pray and seek God’s intervention.

reports that the Borno Geographic Information Service (BOGIS) on Thursday demolished EYN church for allegedly flouting land laws.

The church members who were not happy with the outing of BOGIS and what happened on Thursday that led to shooting of church members called on the Borno State Government under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to immediately reconstruct the destroyed Church building.

Borno: Christians furious over EYN Church demolition, members’ killing, demand sanctions

This is coming at the instances where Borno State Governor, Zulum on Thursday in a state wide broadcast appealed for calm, and ordered for immediate investigation into the matter, so as to punish anyone found wanting.

The governor has equally delegated his Deputy, Umar Kadafur who visited the victims in the hospital and ordered for settlement of their medical bills.

Addressing journalists at the demolished site of the Church on Friday, the pastor in-charge of EYN Maduganari, Reverend Shawulu Auta Ndahi, condemned the killing of one of his church members who attempted to protect the Church from demolition, stressing that, there is nothing worth on earth that can compensate life.

“We have gathered here today to express our displeasure over what has happened to our Church and its members.

“Yesterday (Thursday) at about 11am, we received a distress call that some officials of BOGIS in company of some CJTF and graders came and demolished our Church with all facilities destroyed.

“In the process, some of our members started hurling stones at the officials of BOGIS, before Some CJTF members opened fire after seizing their communication gadgets, which led to the killing of Mr. Ezekiel Bitrus. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Two dead as crisis breaks out in Borno over demolition of EYN Church building

“In view of this unwholesome conduct, we are hereby displaying all our Certificate of Occupancy and other relevant documents used in acquiring this land which are legal documents.

“Therefore, as a Church which believes in peace and unity, we have some immediate demands from Governor Zulum to; immediately reconstruct our demolished Church and other facilities including our pure water factory.

“Although, there is nothing on earth that can compensate for life, we requested the state government to immediately assist the families of the deceased and those who sustained gunshot wounds currently receiving treatment at a state Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.

“We called on the state government to immediately remove Engineer Adam Bababe from heading BOGIS which is an agency of government tasked with responsibility of land maintenance.

“The Church which has 99% of its membership and citizens of Borno, also want the state government to lift the ban on teaching of Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) in all our primary and secondary schools as it has been the practice in the past, as the constitution allows for freedom of worship in the country,” the cleric stated.

Also in his own address, the Youth CAN Chairman Metro, Mr. Sunday Ishaku, while making his condemnation on behalf of Christian youth groups, prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and quick recovery for those who sustained injuries during the avoidable fracas.

Ishaku, however, passed a vote of no confidence on the CAN Chairman led by Bishop Naga, whom he allegedly took some officials/individuals to meet with Governor Zulum some hours after the incident at the Government House just for their selfish interest.

“We are disappointed with the CAN leadership under the Chairmanship of Bishop Mohammed Naga, because as I address you today, Bishop Naga has failed to officially come out with a statement regarding this unwholesome treatment meted to us by BOGIS and men of CJTF,” Ishaku alleged.
