Benin Republic files fresh charges against Sunday Igboho

Meanwhile, some Nigeria have predicted that Maria maybe one of two wild cards to watch out for.

Sunday Igboho finally gets access to doctors

Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has been granted access to his doctors.

Maxwell Adeleye, Communications Manager, Ilana Omo Oodua, announced the development in a statement on Monday.

He also confirmed that Beninise security operatives unchained the agitator at the weekend.

The spokesman said they removed leg chains and handcuffs from Ighoho since Saturday evening.

“Chief Ighoho’s wife has now been granted access to meet her husband three times daily.

“Medical personnel provided by our legal team have examined Chief Sunday Adeyemo.”

Ilana Omo Oodua, a body of self-determination Yoruba groups, insisted that the secessionist is not under immigration-related probe in Benin.

The organization appealed to supporters to remain calm and act within the ambit of the law.

“We are confident that Chief Igboho shall be set free”, the statement added.

Igboho faces extradition charges to be brought against him by the Nigerian government.

Uncertainty as Beninese court sends Sunday Igboho back to detention

The Cour De’appal De Cotonou in Benin Republic late Monday ordered the continued detention of Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a. Sunday Igboho.

The Yoruba agitator will remain in government custody pending investigations.

The details of Igboho’s trial have not been made public but it might be Immigration-related despite denials by his lawyers and associates.

It is unclear if the Nigerian government filed formal charges yet. If this has not be done, the court ruling which approved further grilling of Igboho could mean he might have run foul of Beninise laws.

At the resumed hearing, scores of secessionist’s admirers and traditional rulers thronged the court premises. He was driven in at about 7 a.m.

Igboho remained there for 15 hours as the prosecution and his lawyers argued over his trial. The wife, Ropo, was with him.

The Court President, as proceedings continued, called the Police in to control journalists and supporters for decorum.

Nigerian authorities want Igboho repatriated. He is accused of stockpiling weapons and threatening the federal government and security agencies.

Before his arrest, the presidency said the separatist was carrying out acts of terror and disturbing the peace under the guise of protecting fellow kinsmen.

Igboho was incriminated for “hate speeches,” alleged attempt to build an armoury as well as plan to undermine the unity of Nigeria.

“Assault weapons are not tools of peace loving people. Regardless of who they are and where they are from, the Security Agencies should treat them all the same,” President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu had said.

Nigerian law rubbished case against Nnamdi Kanu – Lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, a counsel to the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has revealed how the Nigerian law backed the secessionist in the treason felony case filed against him by the Federal Government.

Ejimakor, who addressed reporters on Monday at Federal High Court Maitama Abuja where Kanu was expected to resume his trial, said “no Nigerian can be tried for any offence that is not supported by written law in the country”.

According to him, a section of the Nigerian constitution, ‘African Chattered of Human and People’s Right, Ratification and Enforcement Act’, chapter A-9 laws of Federation of Nigeria”, permits self determination.

He noted that the Article 1 of same chapter mandated the government to support its citizens exercising the right.

Nnamdi Kanu: There will be no trial of IPOB leader – Lawyer, Ejimakor

“Let’s get this clear, trial of what? Nothing can be built on nothing, we have made it clear. The counsel representing the four other defenders have made it clear in their applications that the main charge, ‘treasonable felony’ is not supported by any law in the Federation of Nigeria. It is there in the Nigerian constitution.

“No Nigerian can be tried for any offence that is not supported by written law in the country.

“And we have another law in this country, it is called ‘African Chatter of Human and People’s Right, Ratification and Enforcement Act’, chapter A-9 laws of Federation of Nigeria.

“Article 20 of that chapter made it clear that all citizens of Nigeria have the right of self determination. I’m not sure the office of the Attorney General of the Federation is aware of that.

Nnamdi Kanu: Why DSS failed to produce Biafra agitator in court – Lawyer
“And article 1 said that the Nigerian State must do everything possible to assist the citizen or the country in exercising that right without any hindrance.

“So, the postponement and rejection of bail is what we are considering”, he said.

Benin Republic files fresh charges against Sunday Igboho

Benin Republic has filed fresh charges against Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

Igboho was arrested at the Cotonou Airport in the country last Monday.

Ibrahim Salami, one of the lawyers representing Igboho, confirmed the new charges after Monday’s hearing, after which Igboho was ordered to remain in custody.

Before the hearing, Salami had said they were expecting extradition charges from the Nigerian government against the activist.

However, he has now disclosed Igboho is facing fresh charges.

These charges include illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers and an attempt to cause civil unrest.

Salami had expected that Igboho would be freed on Monday, as the Federal Government of Nigeria had yet to file formal extradition charges against Igboho.

He explained that the previous allegations that warranted placing Igboho on a watchlist had successfully been tackled during the hearing.

Why security agencies prefer DSS facility to Kuje Prison ' Nnamdi Kanu

Nigeria’s intelligence community are against the demand by Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team to have him moved to the Kuje Prison from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

In court on Monday, his counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor informed the media of three applications, including Kanu’s transfer to the correctional centre.

First: An expedited hearing in the case of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

The lawyer said Justice Binta Nyako explained that an approval is required from the Chief Justice of the Federal High Court to prosecute the trial due to the current vacation of judges.

Second: Ejiofor disclosed that he complained about DSS’s refusal to allow lawyers to regularly meet Kanu.

“We told the court that the detention authority, in this case, the DSS, should give us access to our client. We’ve not seen him. That has been agreed and we are going to see him soon“, he said.

The third: An application to get Kanu transferred to the Kuje Correctional Centre. “The application was made on July 14, 2021”, Ejiofor hinted.

Justice Nyako rejected the plea, insisting Kanu is safe, secure and being kept in good conditions at the DSS.

However, intelligence agencies are not comfortable with the request. They believe the motive is a jail break being “planned” by IPOB and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN).

An officer told PRNigeria that a grand plan of a massive attack on the Kuje Prison had been uncovered.

“They want him transferred to the prison so they can storm there as they have done to many Police Stations and Correctional Centres in the South-East in the last six months.

“Nnamdi Kanu celebrated the destruction when he emphasized via his Twitter account that no soul deserved to be locked up in any Nigerian prison. Imagine him now saying that’s where he prefers,” he said.

The source pointed out that prominent individuals arrested and detained at the DSS are normally given better treatment, compared to police cells.

The law enforcement circle asserts IPOB/ESN members carried out the assault on Imo Prison and Police Headquarters with sophisticated weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

A separate source told DAILY POST on Tuesday that Kuje Prison may not be able to withstand a coordinated intrusion.

“I’m going to be sincere with you, the facility isn’t a place for a high-profile suspect like Nnamdi Kanu who has thousands of die-hard followers.

“Kuje Prison is not extremely fortified and you know it’s actually not within Abuja. So if there’s a situation, damage might have been done before reinforcement gets there.”

Nigerian authorities argue that foreign countries and partners agree that the carnage by IPOB and ESN, including the murder of security agents and civilians, justify Kanu’s arrest.

Kanu was intercepted in Kenya and repatriated on June 27, 2021 after years on the run. The outspoken separatist will be re-arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in October.
