BIAFRA NEWS: Arsenal player ratings vs Brighton: Nicolas Pepe at the double

 Arsenal, Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal beat Brighton 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday on the final day of the 2020/21 season, courtesy of two fine goals from Nicolas Pepe.

Mikel Arteta opted to make two changes from the midweek victory over Crystal Palace with Bukayo Saka and Mohamed Elneny dropping out in place of Martin Odegaard and Granit Xhaka.

With 10,000 fans in attendance the players received a wonderful warm welcome, a sight for sore eyes with the lack of supporters having taken its toll on football as a spectacle.

Those there witnessed Arsenal dominate the opening 45 minutes against the Seagulls. Graham Potter’s side were a threat on the break but the hosts had them pinned back for large spells, playing some neat football on the edge of the box.

The goal did come shortly after the break as Nicolas Pepe controlled Calum Chambers’ fizzed ball into the box before slamming through Sanchez.

Another followed with half an hour left as the excellent Martin Odegaard found the Ivorian once more, who danced into the box and slotted a delightful effort through Lewis Dunk’s legs and into the bottom corner. An almost carbon copy of his effort against Sheffield United.

It was total control from Mikel Arteta’s side from thereon in with Partey also smashing the crossbar, while results elsewhere ensured there would be no Europa Conference League and, sadly, no St. Totteringham’s Day.

Arsenal, Rob Holding

Arsenal Goalkeeper & Defenders Ratings

Bernd Leno (GK) – 7/10 – Had nothing to do and that he did, he did well.

Calum Chambers (RB) – 7/10 – Supported Pepe well down the right and chipped in with a few delicious crosses, but it was his decision to play infield more which was pleasing. Odegaard picked up great positions and Chambers made sure to find him with better diversity in his distribution.

Rob Holding (CB) – 8/10 – Made and exceptional block in the first half and generally dealt with what Brighton threw at Arsenal comfortably.

Gabriel (CB) – 7/10 – His pace was vital with Arsenal looking to play in the Brighton half. Tracked back well and covered the threat of Mac Allister and Trossard well. Strong in the air as ever.

Kieran Tierney (LB) – 7/10 – A fully fit Tierney is invaluable to this team. Such intelligence every third and has the best deliveries of anyone in the side. Another all-round solid outing for the Scot.

BIAFRA NEWS: Manchester United player ratings vs Wolves Donny van de Beek and Anthony Elanga excellent

Manchester United player ratings vs Wolves: Donny van de Beek and Anthony Elanga excellent

Dean Henderson

Had very little to do and was unfortunate with the goal. Can take credit for organising the defence well and was calm in possession when the ball came to him. 7

Brandon Williams

A couple of sloppy touches early on but he really settled into the game and relished the battle defensively. Unlucky not to score with late chance in the first half. 7

Eric Bailly

Best performance since signing his new contract. Wolves didn't have much of a physical presence in attack but Bailly was solid as the pressure mounted. 7

Axel Tuanzebe

Lost Fabio Silva for Wolves' equaliser, with the forward finding space to run down the channel. Other than that another solid performance and in the frame for a start on Wednesday. 7

Manchester United rounded off the Premier League season with a 2-1 away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, as we saw debuts for Hannibal and Will Fish.

In the final league game of the campaign, the Reds made the journey to Molineux to end the domestic season in style.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s much-changed team, with the Europa League final in mind, stunned the home side early on. Anthony Elanga’s bullet header put United ahead in the Black Country. Nelson Semedo then sent the home fans wild with an equaliser, six minutes prior to half-time, before Juan Mata scored a penalty in first-half stoppage time to regain the lead.

In the second half, Wolves fought for an equaliser but could not find a way past a solid Reds defence, meaning United ran out 2-1 winners.

Here are the main talking points from the Premier League season finale…

Wolves 2-1 Manchester United: Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota propel Wanderers to Wembley FA Cup semi-final

FINAL DAY

Sunday was the last match day of the Premier League season. We already knew ahead of kick-off at Molineux that United would finish second in the league. Elsewhere, it was a tight battle for the remaining Champions League spots, with Liverpool and Chelsea claiming them ahead of Leicester City, who remained in fifth after a 4-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day. Hence, Chelsea qualified despite a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa.

Ole’s men finish the season with 74 points, having won 21 matches, drawn 11 and only lost six - the joint-fewest in the league. The Reds have a tendency to avoid defeat away from home on the final day of the season, and did so again at Molineux. This was our eighth in in our last 11 away games on the final day of the season, with the remaining three ending all square.

UNBEATEN AWAY

Talking about away days, with the win, United finished the league season unbeaten away from home. A full season without defeat away from home has only been managed by Preston North End (1888/89) and Arsenal (2001/02 and 2003/04) in the English top-flight previously.

With our final-day win, our away statistic reads 12 wins and seven draws. We love an away day!
