Again gunmen burn down Police Station in Imo State, free detainees

Gunmen on Tuesday attacked another police station in Imo State, freed suspects in detention and razed it down.

This happened barely 24 hours after the Imo State Correctional Centre and the State Police Headquarters were attacked on Monday with many inmates set free.

Tuesday’s incident happened a few hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu left the State.

The VP, IGP and the Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, were in the state to inspect the level of damage on the burnt security facilities.

The Gunmen attacked and burnt Ehime Mbano Local Government Area Divisional Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

Without any form of investigation, the outgoing IGP Adamu had yesterday accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Eastern Security Network, ESN, of carrying out the attacks.

This was after the IPOB in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, denied any involvement in the dastardly act.

The gunmen were said to have operated without any resistance from Security agencies on Tuesday.

IPOB : There’ll never be Biafra again, says Buhari’s aide, Onochie

Lauretta Onochie, Senior Special Assistant on Social Media to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), says there will never be a Republic of Biafra again.

She stated this on Monday following Imo attacks which the police have accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra of being the masterminds.

Onochie, who is from Southern Nigeria, tweeted a video showing the then Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, receiving the then Biafran Vice President, Major General Philip Effiong, who facilitated the surrender of the Biafran State to Nigeria in 1970. Effiong had assumed leadership of the secessionist state after the Biafran leader, Colonel Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, fled to Ivory Coast in the heat of the civil war.

“The very day nails were put in the coffin of Biafra. There’ll never be Biafra again, Never!” the President’s aide captioned the video.

Dissatisfaction over the Nigerian State and the quest for sovereignty had led Ojukwu to declare the exit of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria in May 1967. The Biafran territory essentially comprised the South-East region of Nigeria.

The declaration led to a civil war that lasted two and half years as the Nigerian State under Gowon battled to unify the soul of the country using state powers and military might.

The war ended in January 1970 with the South-East region back in Nigeria but the civil war left a ghoulish imprint on the Nigerian history with squalid tales of deaths, blood, hunger, horror, sorrow and more deaths.

However, decades later, secessionist agitations resurfaced in the South-East. The agitation, this time, is being championed by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The Buhari regime had in September 2017 outlawed IPOB and declared that the activities of the group constituted an act of terrorism and illegality.

Before then, Kanu was arrested and jailed but was later released from the Kuje Prison in Abuja after meeting bail conditions. The IPOB leader later fled the country and has been operating from overseas.

Of late, IPOB formed the Eastern Security Network but the security outfit has no backing of the governors of the South-East. It has, therefore, been at loggerheads with state-authorised security agencies like the police and the army.

earlier reported that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Monday, accused IPOB’s ESN operatives of being the masterminds of attacks on the Imo State Police Command headquarters and the Owerri Correctional Prison, which led to the release of over 1,800 inmates and the destruction of scores of vehicles and state assets.

Champions League: Chelsea’s Kovacic opens up on Rudiger’s fight with Kepa

Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic, has opened up on Antonio Rudiger’s training ground fight with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Recall that Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, had dismissed Rudiger from training on Easter Day after a fight with Kepa.

Rudiger and Kepa were involved in an altercation at Chelsea’s training ground following their Premier League 5-2 home shock defeat against West Brom over the weekend.

Reacting to the development ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Porto on Wednesday night, Kovacic insisted that the incident has been left behind, adding that it was just a competition in the dressing room.

Asked about the scuffle involving Rudiger and Kepa, Kovacic told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday: “It’s not a big deal. It’s just competition in the dressing room and we spoke about it, all cleared, so it’s all done.

“We are a strong group, and these things happen in a family and in strong groups. We accept it, we leave it behind, we clear it, and we are all focused together for the game tomorrow [against Porto].”

He added, “It’s a difficult draw. Porto is a good team which we saw already against Juventus.

“They knocked out a big opponent, so they showed togetherness and great spirit. It will be a tough game because they fight together, and they stick together.

“It will be a tough game like every game in the Champions League, but we are prepared for it, and tomorrow is a big day for us. ‘I’m sure the whole team is focused.”

AGF Malami blinded by 2023 presidential ambition – A. A support group

A socio-political group, Amalgamated Atiku Support Group has lambasted the Attorney General of the Federation AGF, Abubakar Malami SAN for allegedly casting aspersions on the Nigeria citizenship of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

The group accused Malami of being blinded by his ambition for the 2023 Presidency by insinuating that Atiku is not eligible to vie for the exalted office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement by its Director of Media, Remi Adebayo, the group said it was laughable for a Chief Law Officer of the federation to behave the way Malami did on the citizenship of Atiku.

The statement reads “In accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami is expected to be the Chief Law officer of the entire nation.

“As the Attorney General of the Federation, it becomes a huge source of concern when the occupant of the exalted office is acting as if he is the Attorney General of the ruling APC.

“For Malami to join the suit filed by a hurriedly put together group known as Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA) begs the question as to what the interest of Malami the AGF is.

“The suit before the court challenging the citizenship of Atiku Abubakar, it would be recalled, has been exhaustively dealt with by the Court of Appeal and same affirmed by the Supreme Court at the final judgment during the Presidential election petition tribunal.

“It is therefore laughable and inconceivable to see the Attorney General of the Federation putting his weight behind such an exercise in futility.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku’s Nigeria’s citizenship is a settled matter and anything contrary to that is a figment of Malami’s warped imagination.

“However, it must be expressly stated that Malami’s action is predicated on his ambition to run for the office of the President to take over from Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

“This inordinate ambition of Malami can be glimpsed from how desperately he moved against some of his own party men who have indicated interest to run against him in the APC, but ultimately, Atiku Abubakar is seen as the biggest threat hence this heinous move to stop the former Vice President.

“But we have no doubt that this plot shall fail. Malami’s belief that he can use his position as the chief law officer and the instrumentality of the courts to achieve his vaulting ambition will also collapse on his face.

“We urge the courts not to allow itself to be a pawn in the hands of AGF Malami, even as we ask Nigerians to speak up and rise against this evil machination as it is capable of denying them (Nigerians) the much-needed good governance that would be brought by Atiku Abubakar when God willing he is elected into the office of the President come 2023”.

Medical trip: Buhari not in London for prayers – Aisha Yesufu tells protesters

Aisha Yesufu, a right activist popular with the Bring Back Our Girl BBOG, campaign, has reminded pro-Buhari protesters that President Muhammadu Buhari did not go to London to pray.

reported on Monday that Buhari’s supporters stormed the Abuja House in London where the Nigerian leader is said to be going through a routine medical check-up with placards praying for the President.

It was a counter-rally, in the wake of a protest by an anti-Buhari group led by Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide at the same venue.

Recall that Buhari had departed Nigeria on Tuesday to the UK for a medical check-up.

However, Aisha reminded the pro-Buhari protesters that the President had abandoned the poor healthcare system in his country and travelled abroad to get treated in a good healthcare system built by people like him.

“Buhari did not go to the UK for prayers. He went for medical treatment & he is getting it from the healthcare system built by people like him in their country.

“The healthcare system wasn’t built by prayers but by using the greatest miracle God gave humans: BRAINS plus a dose of empathy,” she tweeted.

Defend yourselves against IPOB members – Uzodinma tells policemen

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma, on Tuesday, urged policemen to use their rifles to defend themselves against members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Uzodinma spoke at the Police Command headquarters when the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, visited the state to assess the level of harm done on the police facility by unknown gunmen on Monday.

“If you can’t attack them, you can at least use your rifles to defend yourselves. Any attack on police formation is an insult to us as a government.

“It is also an attack on the integrity of the government. We must take charge, take control and ensure discipline, ”the governor said.

Recall that some unknown gunmen had attacked the police headquarters and the Correctional Centre in Owerri and freed hundreds of inmates.

The gunmen who operated from 1 am to 3 am on Monday freed suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

Meanwhile, Uzodinma had already set up a commission of inquiry following the incident on Monday.

Essien Udim LG deserted as Military sends bombardment to capture hoodlums

Residents of Essien Udim Local government area of Akwa Ibom State have vacated their communities following the military bombardment in the council to tackle the attacks on security personnel in the area by hoodlums suspected to be members of Eastern Security Network.

A source who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that a combined military offensive that began at midnight on Monday ended about noon on Tuesday and saw the deployment of helicopters and drones for aerial surveillance while ground troops moved to dislodge and flush out criminal elements.

Recall that Essien Udim which is Senator Godswill Akpabio’s LGA has been under siege for over one month by hoodlums who had targeted and killed police officers, military personnel and destroyed their facilities in the state.

The attack started precisely on February 2021, at Ikpe Annang junction, where a police Inspector was set ablaze inside a police Van, others on duty that night fled for safety.

Later in the months, the bandits attacked the Ikot Afanga community in the same LGA and killed an Inspector of Police identified as Aniekan, while a divisional police station, in the LGA, was also set ablaze by the hoodlums and police vans destroyed.

Just last week Tuesday, three police officers including a Chief Superintendent of Police, Ben Ajide were killed in a failed reprisal operation, while four officers were declared missing after the operation.

The military bombardment on Tuesday was specifically targeted against criminals in Ikot Akpan forest suspected to be harbouring the criminals in the local government.

The military had on Monday asked residents to vacate areas suspected to be used as camps by the criminals.

Staff and students of the Federal Polytechnic Ukana in Essien Udim, located few metres from Akpabio’s residence were forced out of the school campus. The Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic in Ikot Ekpene was also shut.

A lecturer in the University who pleaded anonymity but confirmed the bombardment in the morning said, “well, the bombardment started in the early hours of today. I learnt they sent advance notification that the civilians should vacate the said areas before moving in this morning.

So, the aerial bombardment and the support troops, I think it started this morning around 8am or so. Most students from the Polytechnic could hear the fighters jets and the gunshots. It was an offensive to flush out criminals within three major communities in Essien Udim LGA, the communities are Uwa, Ikot Afanga, Ikot Akpan communities all in the local government” he said.

Also, another resident of the community who identified himself as Akpan said the bombardment was a great relief to the communities who have experienced criminal attacks specially targeted at the police in local communities.

“Yes, there had been cases of insecurity of late with the hoodlums targeting police officers and establishments and of course the military had to come in. Advanced notice was sent to the communities to vacate the areas”

He expressed the hope that the bombardment will bring an end to series of criminals attacks in the locality.

Another resident said, “We woke up this morning with a strange sound of gunshots and a military helicopter hovering around the entire village with fearful sounds. Although we heard information about nobody knew it was going to be that fearful. So, I instructed my wife and children to remain indoors throughout the exercise.

“I don’t know how many people were arrested by the army but what I know is that they carried out an aerial surveillance of the entire community in the LGA.”
