Hope Uzodinma reacts, sets up commission of inquiry . Imo Prison Break

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has condemned in strong terms the attack by gunmen at the Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Service Centre in Owerri, describing it as ‘barbaric’.

Uzodinma expressed his displeasure after the State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Owerri, on Monday, where he assessed the level of damages.

The governor, who had earlier visited the two facilities in the company of heads of security agencies in the state, said the attack was to instil fear and make the people more vulnerable.

According to him, the government had set up an enquiry panel into the incident with a view to finding out the circumstances surrounding the attack.

He said that government and security agencies would definitely get to the root of the matter to fish out the perpetrators.

Uzodinma assured residents of the state of their safety, noting that government and security agencies would be more proactive to forestall a reoccurrence.

He disclosed that more than 1,800 inmates were at the correctional service before they were freed by the gunmen adding that some of them had started returning voluntarily while others had been rearrested.

“It has been an eventful day today being Easter Monday in Imo as yet to be ascertained gunmen attacked the correctional service centre, setting some facilities ablaze and releasing some inmates.

“The gunmen were at the police headquarters where they destroyed 38 vehicles and also set the facilities ablaze.

“Efforts by the gunmen to penetrate into the Imo State Government House were not successful as they ended up shooting sporadically at the entrance gate,” he said.

According to the governor, a detailed investigation would be carried out and the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

However, normalcy has returned to the state while residents have begun to go about their normal businesses.

We will ensure release of our abducted children by all means – Parents

The parents of the 39 students kidnapped from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Kaduna, have expressed resolve to ensure the release of their children.

Representatives of the affected parents, Sam Kambai and Comrade Sanni in a statement, alleged that the state government does not carry parents along in its efforts to rescue the students.

Recall that Governor El-Rufai has vowed to prosecute anyone found negotiating with bandits on behalf of the state government.

The governor had made the threat when he appeared on Channels TV, saying his government would not negotiate with bandits despite the high rate of kidnapping in the state.

The governor had said, “Some people are pretending to negotiate with the bandits on our behalf. We have issued a statement that we are going to trace these people, we are going to prosecute them.”

However, the parents in the statement said El-Rufai has never addressed them since the incident happened.

They claimed the government has shown no concern over the trauma the parents go through and the pain they had to endure.

“For the government to not do everything to secure the release of the students 25 days after their abduction, and for government to keep the parents in the dark as to what it is doing if any at all, smacks of gross insensitivity,” they lamented.

“We observe with disappointment that in the Easter message by the Governor, there was no mention whatsoever of the students or any assurance of what government is doing to ensure their release. For us, it was a confirmation of our fear that the government has abandoned our children.”

“We can never abandon our children and we will do whatever we can to see that we get them back.”

The parents recalled that the father of one of the abducted students, Mallam Ibrahim Shamaki, died due to shock upon receiving the news of the kidnap of his daughter and her continued stay in captivity, stressing that many parents have come down with high blood pressure as well.

The statement said that they would continue with efforts to release their children as they do not want to lose more parents since the government has shown no empathy nor communicated on the fate of the students.

Boko Haram fighters eliminated in Gwoza mountain battle

Nigerian troops have killed Boko Haram fighters in a gun duel in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The terrorists were eliminated after an assault against soldiers of the 192 Battalion.

The sect members moved in via a route on the Gwoza Madara mountain.

Tango 9 troops responded with higher firepower and neutralised some of them; others were forced to retreat.

An intelligence told PRNigeria that eleven corpses of insurgents were counted after the general area was searched.

“With the aid of heavy firing and mortar bombs, troops engaged them at their mountainous den,” the source said.

Nearly a dozen AK-47 rifles, anti-aircraft guns, motorcycles and other items were recovered after the battle.

BIAFRA : IPOB may not be responsible – HURIWA suggests

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has said members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, may not be responsible for the attacks on the police headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The rights group has alleged that some persons working with the Federal Government may be behind the attacks.

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen had also broken into the Correctional Centre in the city, freeing hundreds of inmates.

The gunmen who operated from 1 am to 3 am, freed suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

However, HURIWA claims some officials out to destabilize the Southeast are responsible for the attacks.

The group said this in a statement sent to  by its National Coordinator.

The statement reads partly: “We think that there is nobody with his or her senses intact who is from the South East of Nigeria that is happy that the peace they have enjoyed for a long while is about to be destroyed.

“The cheap imagination that the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) may be responsible for these attacks, may not exactly be the true representation of the facts behind all of this sponsored violence in the South East of Nigeria.

“We think there is a plot by some persons working and embedded in government in Abuja who wants to instigate unrests in the usually quiet and peaceful Igboland to deny the region of the opportunity of making a strong case to produce the President of Nigeria of a South-East extraction in the 2023 Presidential elections.”

NIGERIA President : Rumors of President Buhari’s Death Abound

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari is seen at the Nnamdi Azikwe international airport as he departs to London to receive medical care, in Abuja, Nigeria May 8, 2017.

In Nigeria, rumors have begun to spread that President Muhammadu Buhari has died. These appear to be false, despite that the president has appeared ill for months. After spending an extended medical leave in London in January and February, he left for London once again on May 7.

His trip to London immediately followed the release of eighty-two of the Chibok school girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014. He returned to London having signed over his authority to the vice president, in accordance with the constitution.

Nevertheless, on May 14, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu tweeted that President Buhari is “alive and well,” and said that Nigerians should ignore contrary rumors: “Baseless rumors are trending again that an unpleasant thing has happened to our beloved President, Muhammadu Buhari.

If you have received this information on WhatsApp or Facebook, disregard it bcos it is plain lies spread by vested interests to create panic. Nothing unpleasant has happened to the President. No cause for apprehension. Thanks for the many calls.”

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been confirmed dead in London where he was receiving medical treatment… The Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom told reporters plans are

underway to transport the body of the late president back to Abuja where final funeral rites will be held… Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to be sworn into office as the substantive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Government is yet to issue an official statement of the President’s demise. He was 74 years.”

Of course, the Nigerian High Commissioner in London has issued no such statement. But rumors about Buhari’s health proliferate, and the rise of social media facilitates their spread. Some Nigerians see parallels with the demise of President Umaru Yar’adua in 2010.

Lack of transparency about presidential health throughout Africa encourages rumor mongering. So does lack of basic information. There has been no official, credible announcement about President Buhari’s whereabouts in London, nor whether if he is receiving medical treatment and what that treatment might be.

NEWS : Buhari tells Nigerians to ignore rumours of his death and replacement

Nigeria: Buhari marks two years in office | Africa | DW | 29.05.2017

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed allegations that the real head of state died and was replaced by a lookalike from Sudan.

Addressing Nigerians in Poland, Buhari said the rumours were fuelled by people who wished for his death, when he took sick leave last year.

‘‘A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health. It is real me… I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong,’‘ Buhari told Nigerians when asked about Jubril..

The presidency circulated Buhari’s comments in an emailed statement entitled “It’s Real Me, President Buhari Responds to Cloning Allegation”.

Who is fuelling the allegation?

While no evidence has been presented, videos making the claim have still been viewed thousands of times on YouTube and Facebook.

The global news agency, AFP recently tested the claims including photos and videos posted by people who say Nigeria is currently being governed by an impostor from Sudan called ‘Jubril Al-Sudani’.

The rumours questioning Buhari’s identity and speculation of death, have been peddled by several social media users including prominent people, notably Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The man you are looking at in the television is not Buhari… His name is Jubril, he’s from Sudan. After extensive surgery they brought him back,” Kanu told his supporters in 2017.

‘Biafrans’ from Southeast Nigeria are increasingly critical of Buhari, and more likely to spread the allegations of his death and replacement.

Tensions and military operations in the region have increased following a spike in pro-Biafran protests that were sparked by the arrest in October 2015 of IPOB leader, Kanu.

The prevailing tensions in the southeast come nearly half a century after a previous unilateral declaration of an independent Republic of Biafra sparked a 30-month civil war that left more than one million dead.

Buhari is seeking re-election in next year’s poll, and will be facing stiff competition from former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar.

Abubakar, who named Peter Obi, a former southeastern governor, as his running mate in October, will be hoping to win the Igbo vote, as he seeks to unseat the incumbent.

The police in Niger State, Nigeria, have apprehended a teenage boy, Kabiru Idi, for having sex with a goat.

His arrest was aided by a secret information offered to the law enforcement agents. The Daily Post News reported that the suspect had engaged in the act twice so far.

Babalola Adewole, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Niger State Police Command confirmed the authenticity of the report.

He stated that Idi who is from the Bosso Local Government Area of the state will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Married father of 6 caught having sex with goat

Just like homosexuality, sexual intercourse with animals has been another trend of immorality facing Nigeria.

African countries frown against such behaviour and have set up structures to ensure that they have no place in the society though no much is being done about corruption.
