Eddie Murphy Quit Acting For Six Years

Eddie Murphy The Adventures of Pluto NashEddie Murphy The Adventures of Pluto NashEddie Murphy - Movies, Children & Wife - Biography

Once some actors find their breakthrough role, it can take a couple of years for their careers to catch up. That is the case because they may be committed to small roles in several projects by the time they become a star. On top of that, it can take a while for the powers that be in Hollywood to pick up on the next big thing and give them the kind of roles they deserve.

When it comes to Eddie Murphy, once his incredible Saturday Night Live tenure made him famous, he seemed to be among the busiest people in Hollywood overnight. After all, from 1980 until 1984, Murphy starred in Saturday Night Live, headlined four films, and released Eddie Murphy: Delirious.

Throughout the rest of the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, Eddie Murphy remained incredibly busy. Then, from the year 2012 until 2019, Murphy only starred in a single film. Of course, the fact that Murphy almost entirely quit acting for six years was pretty shocking to his legion of fans but as it turns out, there was a specific reason for his absence.

Ever since Marc Maron launched his “WTF” podcast, it has been among the most popular shows in the medium. The main reason for that is that Maron’s willingness to be very open during his interviewers tends to put his guests at ease to the point that they reveal things they usually keep close to the chest. For example, in March 2021 Maron interviewed Eddie Murphy for an episode of his podcast, and during their conversation, Murphy was incredibly honest.

While talking to Marc Maron, Eddie Murphy talked about the fact that he has made a lot of movies that were ripped apart by critics and viewers alike. For example, 2003’s The Adventures of Pluto Nash was such a massive failure at the box office and with critics that it still lives in infamy. On top of that, Murphy also headlined several other panned movies like A Thousand Words, Norbit, Holy Man, The Haunted Mansion, Meet Dave, and I Spy among others.

From the outside looking in, it always seemed like Eddie Murphy was so rich, famous, and confident that any bad reviews slid off him like water on a duck’s back. However, during the aforementioned “WTF” interview, Murphy revealed that the ridicule some of his movies received began to weigh on him. “I was making these s----y movies. I was like, ‘This s--- ain’t fun. They’re giving me Razzies. Motherf-----s gave me the "worst actor ever" Razzie.' It was like, ‘Maybe it’s time to take a break.’”

After talking about the reasons for his acting break, Eddie Murphy revealed that it wasn’t meant to last nearly as long as it did. “I was only gonna take a break for a year, then all of a sudden six years go by, and I’m sitting on the couch, and I’m like, I kinda could sit on this couch and not get off it. But I don’t want to leave it the last bunch of s--t they see me do is bull---t, so let me get off the couch and do some stuff and remind them that I’m funny.”

What You Don't Know About Eddie Murphy

After almost giving up acting for six years, Eddie Murphy took Hollywood by storm again with the release of 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name. An incredibly successful movie that was embraced by virtually everyone, a lot of people would argue that Dolemite Is My Name is the single best film that Murphy has ever made. Whether or not you would go that far, there is no debate that film launched a new chapter in Murphy’s career.

After the success of Dolemite Is My Name, Eddie Murphy was primed to take full advantage of the momentum his career was enjoying at that time. For that reason, Murphy announced a planned return to standup comedy for the first time in many years. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic took the wind out of a lot of people’s sails and Murphy is no different as his planned 2020 comedy tour had to be postponed.

In 2020, it also became clear that the world was about to see Eddie Murphy return to a couple of his most famous roles. For example, Murphy is supposed to play Axel Foley again since Beverly Hills Cop IIII is supposed to be in the works. Of course, in 2021 Murphy starred in Coming 2 America. Unfortunately, the critics were far from kind to the movie but Coming 2 America has been defended by a lot of fans who were overjoyed to see Murphy portray Akeem again.

NIGERIA BITCOIN : Central Bank of Nigeria Official Reiterates Nigerian Residents Free to Trade Cryptos: Directive Only Applies to Banking Sector

A senior executive with Nigeria’s central bank, Adamu Lamtek, has reportedly denied that his institution had placed restrictions on the use of cryptocurrencies. Instead, Lamtek, who is the deputy governor responsible for corporates services at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says his organisation’s directive only applies to the banking sector.

Prohibition Only Applies to Banks

The remarks by Lamtek, who spoke on behalf of the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, follow the central bank’s February 5, 2021, directive which prohibited banks from facilitating crypto-related transactions. Immediately following the announcement, financial institutions began to comply with the directive. Since then volumes on centralized crypto exchanges have plunged while reports suggest that volumes on peer to peer platforms are on the rise.

In the meantime, before the latest communication from the CBN, rumours circulated that authorities would soon clampdown on peer to peer trading like Binance’s P2P platform. However, Lamtek, who spoke at a seminar for the country’s finance correspondents and business editors, clarified that the CBN directive did not in fact ban cryptocurrency trading.

Meanwhile, after the CBN ordered banks to stop facilitating crypto transactions, many leaders from Nigeria’s blockchain and fintech space reacted by expressing their opposition. One of these leaders, Adedayo Adedajo, the Managing Director at Jerulida Africa DLT, tells Bitcoin.com News that after extensive deliberations, many were in favour of regulating the industry rather than a total ban.

Central Bank of Nigeria Official Reiterates Nigerian Residents Free to Trade Cryptos: Directive Only Applies to Banking Sector

CBN Has No Power to Stop P2P Trading

As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, this CBN prohibition has been opposed by non-crypto parties that include members of the Nigerian Senate as well as the country’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo. Now, according to Adebajo, this latest CBN stance on cryptocurrencies could well be a response to the voices that are opposed to a complete ban. Adebajo said:

Let’s not forget that the initial attempt only scratched the surface a bit as trading continues on the peer to peer platforms despite the CBN directives. Allowing trades to continue can’t be said to be subject to CBN’s power anymore as the financial sector has partially been decentralized.

While the CBN is not in a position to stop peer-to-peer trading, Adebajo however believes this latest clarification to be “a way forward one which we all hope with continuous effort to regulate the industry, adoption will be broad and fast.”

Entertainment, Eddie Murphy made a ton of money making movies he didn’t like

‘Coming 2 America’ Star Eddie Murphy Said His Highest-Paying Movies Were the Least Fun To Make

Eddie Murphy is one of the most successful comedians to ever step foot on a stage. The former Saturday Night Live star made a name for himself doing standup and sketch comedy but quickly transitioned into acting in big-screen roles.

Movies such as Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America proved that Murphy was a bankable star, and he amassed a fortune of $200 million by starring in major Hollywood films that paid him handsomely.

However, as Murphy’s bank account steadily grew with each movie he filmed, his happiness decreased. Murphy recently acknowledged that although he was getting paid millions of dollars for each role, he was no longer receiving any joy from the movies he made and had to take a step back from the business.

Eddie Murphy speaks onstage at Spike TV's "Eddie Murphy: One Night Only" at the Saban Theatre

Murphy opened up about his experiences as a Hollywood superstar during a recent interview with Drew Barrymore.

“I had it all the way together for years and years and years,” Murphy said. “And then what happened with movies is they started offering you so much money to stuff that I wound up doing … You just still be like, ‘Hey, you want to give me that much money to do that sh*t? Okay.’”

Even though Murphy gladly obliged when he first found out how much studios were willing to pay him for films, he realized the personal cost of making those same films later on.

“I did a bunch of movies like that, and it’s forever,” Murphy said. “Way after the money is spent, that sh*t movie is like still playing on a movie channel.”

Realizing that his happiness was diminishing with each big pay day, Murphy decided to take a break from acting.

“I got to where I stopped having fun making movies,” Murphy said. “So I had to take a time, like about 2011 I think it was, I’d stopped for like eight years. I just stopped making movies.

During his time away from the big screen, Murphy managed to reconnect with himself and remember what made him happy.

“And that’s where I had really, really quiet time and got re-centered where if I’m going to be doing something, I want to be doing it because I want to do it, and all that,” Murphy said. “And I got it all back together that way.”

Murphy’s lack of desire to make films solely for a payout has made him more selective with his roles. This is a big reason why Coming 2 America, the sequel to his 1988 classic Coming to America took so long to get developed.

“That’s why the script took so long,” Murphy told TODAY. “Took four years because the script just wasn’t right. Same thing with Beverly Hills Cop, they’ve been trying to get a Beverly Hills Cop together for 10 years. But the script has to be right.”

At this point in his career, Murphy refuses to make films he doesn’t love.

“I told you guys, I’m not doing any more money grabs, I’m not doing any more movies that’s like, ‘Oh, he clearly just did this movie for a check.’ I’m not doing any of those. Only when it’s right. And this thing took four years to get right.”
