Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, says he will re-impose lockdown beginning from January as the number of coronavirus cases surge in the state.

Wike gave hint of imminent second phase of lockdown amid rising cases of COVID-19 during the thanksgiving church service in celebration of the 90th birthday of Mrs. Priscilla Nwanediye Mark, at the St. Martin’s Anglican Church, Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government on Sunday.

He lamented as worrisome the refusal of most churches and markets in the State to enforce compulsory wearing of face masks in adherence to COVID-19 protocol.

Wike said the State government had initially relaxed the restriction on the number of persons who worship in churches, but with the second wave of COVID-19, he will by this week announce new stringent measures to check the spread of COVID-19 cases in the State.

“When you go to some churches, they don’t wear masks. Go to the market, they don’t wear masks. They believe COVID is not real. It’s not real because it has not happened to you; nobody has died whom you know. When somebody has died and the person was close to you, you will know that COVID is real.

“So, it is real and I want to appeal to all of you that we have to be stricter now because the second wave is more dangerous than the first wave. It’s very, very dangerous. I know how many people we have lost since the second wave started,” he said.

NEWS : Trump has indicated he will sign stimulus and government spending bill into law, averting shutdown

 

The president had demanded changes to the stimulus bill but on Sunday signaled he would release the stimulus funds after all

resident Trump has indicated that he will sign the stimulus bill into law before Monday night’s deadline and avert a government shutdown, three people familiar with his plans said Sunday evening, a move that would release $900 billion in stimulus funds as soon as possible.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter remained fluid and they weren’t authorized to disclose Trump’s plans. They said Trump had repeatedly changed his mind on the matter.

Trump’s new decision to sign the bill came less than a week after he demanded changes to it and had suggested he would refuse to sign it into law. On Tuesday, he referred to the bill as a “disgrace” but he signaled on Sunday he would sign it after all.

The government was set to shut down on Tuesday if Trump did not sign the bill into law. The spending package also included a new round of stimulus checks, unemployment aid, and small business assistance, among other things.

Trump hinted that there had been a development on Sunday, when he wrote on Twitter that there was “Good news on Covid Relief Bill. Information to follow!”

Congress overwhelmingly passed the bipartisan bill on Monday night, and Trump released a video on Tuesday demanding changes. 

He said, among other things, that the bill should have authorized stimulus checks of $2,000 per person instead of the $600 payments that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had secured. Trump also wanted spending cuts to be included in the package.

Before the video was posted, Mnuchin had said that the stimulus checks could be sent as soon as this week. It’s unclear whether the roughly week-long delay would push back the issuance of the payments.

Trump’s declaration that he wanted changes made to the bill stunned congressional leaders and even many of his own aides.

 The spending and stimulus bill had been negotiated with Mnuchin and other White House officials, and the treasury secretary had praised the legislation in a Monday CNBC appearance.

Over the weekend, Trump issued a number of tweets appearing to continue his insistence on the $2,000 checks. Approving the checks, however, didn’t seem politically feasible in time to avert a shutdown on Tuesday.

 Many Democrats were supportive of the idea of larger stimulus checks, but a number of Republicans were opposed. And approving such a change without unanimous consent in one day is not possible.

The consequences of inaction are immense.

If the bill isn’t signed into law by Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees would be sent home without pay. And even the many federal employees who continue to work because they are deemed “essential,” such as members of the military, will not be paid until a new funding bill is authorized.

In addition to a government shutdown on Tuesday, eviction protections for millions of Americans would lapse later this week; more than 14 million people are losing unemployment benefits; and no stimulus checks would be issued. Failing to sign the bill into law would also freeze new money for vaccine distribution, small business aid, the ailing airline industry, and school aid, among other things.

On Sunday, lawmakers expressed a mix of frustration and fury that Trump had not signaled publicly what he planned to do.

“I understand he wants to be remembered for advocating for big checks, but the danger is he’ll be remembered for chaos and misery and erratic behavior if he allows this to expire,” Sen.

 Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said on Fox News on Sunday. “So I think the best thing to do, as I [said], sign this and then make the case for subsequent legislation."

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on ABC News said the president was behaving as an “extraordinary narcissist” and was almost “pathologically narcissistic” in his eleventh-hour crusade against the bill.

“It is insane. It is really insane, and this president has got to finally . . . do the right thing for the American people and stop worrying about his ego,” Sanders said.

Millions of American families who have lost their jobs during the pandemic and are still struggling have no choice but to await the president’s decision.

Deseree and Matthew Cox have had almost zero income since August, when Matthew was let go from his management job in pest control. His application for unemployment benefits from the state of Florida has never made it through the system’s queue.

 The $300 per week Matthew, 38, scrapes together driving for DoorDash hardly makes a dent covering bills, rent and food for themselves and their two children with special needs.

The Coxes have depleted their savings and moved from South Florida to the Indianapolis area for cheaper cost of living and to be near family who could help with childcare. But they say they need the extended unemployment benefits, rental assistance, extended eviction moratoriums and direct payments promised by Congress’s stimulus package.

At one point, Deseree, 37, said she couldn’t afford a medication her son needs “just for him to be able to function.”

“People will die without this money,” Deseree said. “People will get evicted. People will not be able to get their medication. To [lawmakers], $600 or $2,000, it seems so little. But to the American people right now, it’s just everything.”

Since the president posted the video on Dec. 22, White House aides have not offered any public briefings on his strategy or plans. Instead, Trump has issued a series of tweets reiterating his demand for changes but not saying much more. Vice President Pence is in Vail, Colo., and has also been out of sight in recent days.

The White House has provided virtually no information about what its plans are to head off the potential economic calamity of a shutdown and the failure of the relief effort. A White House spokesman declined to comment when asked about the president’s intentions.

 Negotiations between congressional leaders and the administration were at a complete standstill on Sunday, and a backup plan had not materialized.

Before Trump signaled that he would sign the bill after all, people close to the White House described a chaotic scene in which senior officials anxiously await the president’s next move.

 Republicans have expressed increasing concern that by refusing to sign the bill, Trump could hurt the party’s prospects in the George Senate races on Jan. 5. If Republicans lose those two seats, Democrats would control the chamber.

On Sunday, Trump said he planned to travel to Georgia on Jan. 4 to help campaign for the two Republican candidates.

“Everybody in the White House is trying to figure out what’s in Trump’s head, if this is a bluff or if he’s going to carry this out. 

He’s been confronted with all the facts and evidence," said one person briefed by several White House officials over the weekend, speaking on the condition of anonymity to reveal internal discussions. “Nobody knows what Trump is going to do. It’s a bizarre situation."

One person who interacted with Trump in Palm Beach in recent days said the president had not discussed the economic relief bill or the looming government funding deadline. Instead, Trump has been far more focused on his failed effort to reverse the election result, lashing out at Republicans in Congress and members of his own administration for not joining him in the fight.

Trump tweeted several times over the weekend to criticize the aid package, saying: “Increase payments to the people, get rid of the “pork”. He also tweeted: “$2000 + $2000 plus other family members. Not $600. Remember, it was China’s fault!”

Increasing the stimulus payments from $600 per person to $2,000 per adult would add roughly $370 billion to the cost of the bill. In the Cares Act, which passed in March, lawmakers approved stimulus payments of $1,200, which went out to more than 100 million Americans.

SPORT : LaLiga, Barcelona gives injury update on Messi

Barcelona have confirmed that captain, Lionel Messi, will miss their La Liga clash against Eibar on Tuesday night at Camp Nou due to ankle injury.

The Catalan club also said that Messi would return to training after the Eibar match.

Barcelona disclosed this in a statement via its website on Sunday.

SPORT : American wrestler, Luke Harper is dead

 

American wrestler and actor, Jonathan Huber, who was best known for his time in WWE, under the ring name, Luke Harper, is dead.

The father-of-two, who is also known as Brodie Lee, died on Boxing Day at the age of 41 after a hard-fought battle with a non-COVID-19 related lung issue.

His wife, Amanda Huber, announced her husband’s death in a lengthy post via her Instagram account.

Amanda wrote: “My best friend died today.

“I never wanted to write out those words. My heart is broken. The world saw him as the amazing @brodielee (fka Luke Harper) but he was my best friend, my husband, and the greatest father you would ever meet.

“No words can express the love I feel or how broken I’m right now.

“He passed surrounded by love ones after a hard-fought battle with a non-COVID-19 related lung issue. The @mayoclinic is literally the best team of doctors and nurses in the world who surrounded me with constant love.

I have been surrounded by so much love and incredible people I can’t tag them all but they know who they’re and I don’t think they’ll ever know how thankful I’m for them.”

EDUCATION : Varsity autonomy only solution to strike, bad education system – Prof Oyedele

The Assistant Vice-Chancellor University of West of England, Bristol, Professor Lukumon Oyedele has said that ineffective governance and leaders, outdated curriculum are the reasons Nigerian universities cannot meet up with the world.

The University Don said a Nigerian university only manages to rank the 500th positions among its mates in the world.

Prof Oyedele lamented that government policies and structural problems are the main issues undermining the university system in Nigeria.

He made the assertions while delivering a lecture on “Internationalisation of Higher Education in Nigeria: A Change in Attitude and Strategy”, during the 2nd Prince Tunde Ponnle Annual Lecture held at Osun State University, main campus, Osogbo.

Prof Oyedele, however, explained that introducing University autonomy would help each institution determine its standard and manage its resources.

He further said that each university will employ staff based on merit and not by connections.

“The role of the government will just be about monitoring and ensuring accountability within the university system. Not working and still getting paid is a panacea for failure and future strike,” he said.

The guest lecturer further stated that competency-based appointment and performance-based management can go a long way to boost university performance.

EDUCATION : SUG President, Oyo College of Education suspended, students levied N10,000 for reparation

 

The Governing Council, Oyo State College of Education has suspended the Students Union Government President of the institution, Muhammad Olaitan.

Olaitan was suspended for leading a protest in the institution, school authorities reveal.

 gathered that Olaitan had in October this year led students of the institution against the school management.

The Governing Council, however, said Olaitan is suspended for only one semester for leading the protest against the institution.

The council said it set up an investigative panel to examine the role played by the SUG President during the protest.

The council noted that the panel found Olaitan guilty.

The council also asked each student of the institution to pay N10,000 as reparation for damages done to the college property during student’s demonstration.

A letter obtained by , signed by the Acting Registrar of the college, M.O. Abioye and addressed to Olaitan, announced the suspension and the N10,000 reparation levy imposed on students.

“You will recall that you appeared before the panel of investigation that was set up by the Governing Council to explain the role you played in the student violent demonstration that took place on Friday, 6 November and Monday, 9 November 2020.

“The panel has since submitted its preliminary report.

“During deliberation and consideration of the report, the council approved the panel’s recommendation which found you guilty of active participation of wanton destruction of College property.

“To this end, the council has directed that you are suspended for one semester i.e the second semester of 2019/2020 academic session.

“It is hoped that you will learn a lesson about maintaining peace and abstaining from violating the oath to be of good conduct that you signed during your matriculation ceremony”.

EDUCATION : COVID-19, NUC orders universities to stop academic activities

 

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered Vice-Chancellors of universities to stop academic activities amid increasing COVID-19 cases.

Chris Maiyaki, Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration) signed the circular.

Classrooms, hostel accommodation, conferences and seminars are to be put on hold.

Maiyaki directed the universities to remain closed and await further instructions.

“Vice-Chancellors are to please note that the directive is part of the measures approved by Mr. President to mitigate the second wave of Coronavirus infections in the country.

“The affected officers are expected to perform their duties from home while those on GL 13 and above should strictly adhere to the extant preventive measures”, he said.

On December 22, the federal government ordered civil servants on GL 12 and below to stay at home for five weeks.
