COVID-19 second wave, 20 doctors died in one week – NMA cries out

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) says, no fewer than 20 doctors have died of Coronavirus in the country in the last one week.

NMA Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Emma Amodu disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, these doctors lost their lives after contracting the deadly disease while treating infected patients who failed to disclose their true health status.

He pleaded with patients visiting clinics and hospitals not to conceal their true health status to avoid exposing medical practitioners to the risk of infection.

He said, “For those of us in the health sector, we have lost quite a number of colleagues in the last week alone. Across the country, we have lost not less than 20 doctors in the last one week.”

He called on visitors to hospitals and clinics to always adhere to COVID-19 protocols which include wearing of face masks.

“Tell us the truth about your past medical condition and don’t hold any information back,” he added.

NEWS : Christmas, Residents abandon playgrounds, recreational, entertainment centres over COVID-19, kidnapping

Residents of Cross River State on Friday abandoned recreational, entertainment centres and other playgrounds in the state for fear of contracting or spreading the contagious coronavirus, kidnapping and robbery.

who visited some recreational, entertainment centres and playgrounds, observed that most of the centres and playgrounds were scanty while others have no presence of anybody following the closure by the owners with a view to observing government’s order over COVID-19.

At the popular Eleven Eleven Roundabout, Millennium Park, Watt Market Effigy and other places, it was observed that there was either nobody or the number of fund seekers reduced to minimally.

One Chief Okon Asukwo Ekpo who was at Wat Market Effigy on Friday to watch a cultural display told our correspondent that beside COVID-19, people were afraid to come out for fear of being kidnapped or robbed.

He said throughout his 58 years of existence, he has never witnessed this kind of Christmas.

Chief Asukwo Ekpo regretted that the activities of government were not helping matters both at the state and federal, “The activities of the current government at the state and federal government has crippled the economic, social and political activities hence money hardly enters the people’s hands.

“Look round, insecurity all over, kidnapping, robbery, people are afraid to come out for fear of being kidnapped or robbed. However, we thank God for seeing today and hopeful that things will improve in 2021” he stated

Also speaking some owners of recreational centres regretted the insecurity crisis in the country and other crimes alleging that most of the crimes are hatched at recreational, playground and entertainment centres and with a view to control crimes and criminality they decided to operate in a low key.

“We also want to follow the COVID-19 protocol by observing social distancing, washing of hands or using sanitizers and wearing face masks. Our government has done a lot and we as residents have to support her because the 2nd wave of COVID-19 is dangerous”

The Chairman of COVID-19 Response Team who is also the Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, in a statement made available to our reporter directed all Night Clubs in Cross River state to immediately shut down, until further notice.

“The 10pm to 6 a.m curfew imposed by the State Government remains in place while the protocol of ‘No Mask No Movement’ must be enforced at all public places: offices, businesses, markets, shops, and so on.

“All Places of Worship (Churches, Mosques, etc.) must ensure compulsory use of face mask, hand sanitizers, hand washing facilities and also that no gathering exceeds 50% of the maximum capacity of the Venue.

“Avoid public gatherings and parties as much as possible this period. If you must attend, stay alert and protect yourself and loved ones at all times. All Event Planners must ensure that any planned gatherings do not exceed 300 people. This is important to prevent reversal sanctions by Taskforce at your event.

“Any and all breaches of these regulations and public health protocols will lead to immediate closure as well as attract heavy fines, and any other sanctions and penalties deemed fit, in line with the Cross River State Public Health Law amended 2020.”

NEWS : Christmas, Muslims attend Kaduna Church to celebrate with Christians

Muslims from some parts of northern states, who are residents in Kaduna State, on Friday, attended church service to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ (Christmas).

They came in a large number to show love, companion to their Christian counterparts.

While at the popular Evangelical and Life Intervention Church, in Kaduna, they sang, danced and celebrated together, the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to them, their coming together was to strengthen cordial relationship as well as peaceful coexistence.

The General Overseer of Christ’s Evangelical and Life Intervention Church, Pastor Yohanna Buru, who confirmed the presence of Muslims brothers, said they came in their large numbers to celebrate Christmas with them.

“They included women and children, youth and some Islamic scholars as they stormed southern Kaduna church with the aims of joining their Christians friends and relatives to celebrate Christmas,” Rev. Bunu said.

The Christian cleric pointed out that annually, Muslims from various states of northern Nigeria do usually come to the church and celebrate Christmas with them and even this year, despite the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic and economic recession.

“Muslims in their large number visited the church and join us during the Christmas service to foster peace and unity,” He said

According to him, “This year’s Christmas sermon focuses on Religious tolerance, forgiveness, better understanding, peace ,love and unity among Nigerians ,and the need for both Muslims and Christians clerics to be more committed through prayers for the nation for peace stability and the progress of the country.

“Muslims scholar, traditional title holders, peace ambassador, stakeholders on peace-building from Katsina , Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, Zaria, Jos and others who are residents in Kaduna attended the service,” he said

“Muslims that attended the church service were from all the groups of Muslims included; Sunnih, Darikar- Tijjaniyya and Muslim Shi’ites.

“They ate and drank with us, also prayed for the country together, also donated their offering during the service like every other Christian that attended the morning service did,” he said.

“We are happy seeing our brothers and sister joining us in today’s Christmas service, and this show clearly that peace and unity is gradually coming back to the region after series of set back as a result of ethno-religious, political killing that brought so many backward to the entire 19 northern states of region

“We must join hands together and pray to almighty God to bring an end to corruption, banditry, terrorism, robbery, kidnapping and unnecessary killing of human being in the region.

“Our education, agriculture, health, and economy are facing a serious backwardness due to insecurity challenges bedeviling peace stability in the entire region.

“Until our leaders from the entire region including former head of states and various religious leaders and traditional title holders with scholars from various tertiary institutes come together and find out ways and solutions to the current situation before the region would regain its lost integrity,” Rev. Buru added.

Rev. Buru then called on Muslims and Christians to remember that they were created by one God, and Adam and Eve were their original biological parents.

“I’m pleading with Muslims and Christians across the globe to use the season in promoting peace and unity and to forgive one another, so as to live in peace like the rest of the world,” he stressed

“Both Muslims and Christians have holy Books which guided them on how to accommodate, tolerate and live peacefully with one another,” he added.
