SPORT : Transfer, Manchester United in talks to sign Moises Caicedo

Manchester United have begun talks with Independiente del Valle in a bid to sign their central midfielder, Moises Caicedo, according to Daily Record.

The Red Devils expressed an interest in bringing the 19-year-old to England as the January transfer window approaches.

The Premier League giants have now entered negotiations to sign Caicedo, with Independiente del Valle demanding an initial £5.5 million fee plus add-ons and a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Caicedo, who made his first-team debut for Independiente del Valle 14 months ago, has also drawn the interest of West Ham United.

The 19-year-old has four international caps with the Ecuador national team.

He scored his first international goal in Ecuador’s 4-2 win over Uruguay in October.

Speaking earlier this month, Independiente del Valle General Manager, Santiago Morales, disclosed that the club is already considering an offer for Caicedo ahead of the January window.

“We have received an offer from a European club for Moises Caicedo, we are negotiating the proposal,” Morales said.

“It is most likely that he will not be in our team in 2021 due to the proposal we have received, it is very difficult to keep him.”

SPORT : World best, Why I can’t eat on Messi, Ronaldo’s table – Lewandowski

Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski has brushed off talk of comparisons between himself and the two great players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Polish striker suggested his performance levels in recent years stand up to scrutiny with regard to works done by Barcelona king, Messi and superstar, Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo have held the football world to standstill for over a decade, dominating the conversation with regard to the best player on the planet.

The Ballon d’Or award was skipped this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lewandowski helped Bayern to the Bundesliga and Champions League trophies.

“Messi and Ronaldo have been sitting at the same table, at the top, for a very long time, and that’s what makes them incomparable,” Lewandowski told France Football.

“So to answer your question, I can’t imagine myself next to them in this point of view.

“That said, if you take the numbers for this year and even previous ones, I think I’m pretty good in terms of performance and goals scored.

“Failing to be at the same table as Messi and Ronaldo, I think I can invite them to eat at mine!”

Robert Lewandowski won the Best FIFA Award for 2020, beating off competition from Ronaldo and Messi.

The Best FIFA Awards was launched in 2016, after France Football broke the Ballon d’Or away from world football’s governing body after corruption allegations.

SPORT : Arsenal vs Chelsea, Lampard gives update on Ben Chilwell, Reece James

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has provided the latest injury updates on Ben Chilwell and Reece James ahead of the Blues’ Premier League tie against Arsenal on Saturday.

Lampard said that Chilwell would be doubtful for Arsenal clash due to ankle injury, while Reece’s injury is not too bad.

The Englishman said this following Chelsea’s Premier League 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Chelsea defeated West Ham, thanks to a strike from Thiago Silva and a brace from Tammy Abraham.

“I expect he (Chilwell) will be doubtful for Arsenal. He turned his ankle, tried to carry on, but it was too painful, so we will have a scan or whatever tomorrow and try to see how bad he is,” Lampard was quoted by Chelsea’s official website as saying after the game.

“Reece and Chilly have been doing really well so we hope both their injuries are not too bad and they will be in and around those two games over Christmas.”

NEWS : Lai Mohammed reveals only regret as minister under Buhari govt

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that his only regret as a minister of Nigeria is that some Nigerians have failed to appreciate that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is doing so much with little resources.

The minister stated this at a Special Forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Mohammed explained that with dwindling resources, no government in Nigeria’s history had implemented programmes alleviating poverty among vulnerable groups and women as well as creating jobs for the youths as the Buhari administration had done.

“My regret in this government is that Nigerians have failed to appreciate that the government is doing much more with much less.

“2010 to 2014 crude oil was selling from 100 dollars to 140 dollars per barrel, but the highest we’ve sold since we came in is 60 dollars.

“Sometimes, at the peak of COVID-19 pandemic, we were even paying for storage because nobody wanted to take our crude.

“With the drop in revenues and security challenges this government hasn’t retrenched one person but put in place programmes to cushion the effects of the pandemic,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed said Nigerians aren’t giving credit to various intervention programmes of government which include the School Feeding Programme, with not less than 12.8 million pupils receiving one free meal per day to develop their mental capacity.

According to him, over one million Nigerians had benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfer programme carried out in conjunction with the World Bank under which N5,000 is paid out monthly to vulnerable Nigerians.

The minister also said the N75 billion National Youth Investment Fund initiated by the government had provided job opportunities for the youths.

NEWS : BREAKING, COVID-19 second wave: Buhari to meet PTF Tuesday as partial lockdown begins

President Muhammadu Buhari will meet with members of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 today.

The Presidency announced this on Tuesday via its official handle.

“@MBuhari will meet with the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 this afternoon,” @NGRPresident tweeted.

This comes less than 24 hours after the federal government announced a partial shutdown for the next five weeks, in a bid to stem the second wave of Coronavirus across the country.

The PTF Chairman, Boss Mustapha, issued the advisory on Monday at the PTF briefing in Abuja.

According to Mustapha, Buhari had authorised the Presidential Task Force to engage with the states and the Federal Capital Territory to assume full ownership of this stage of the response.

He said that bars, night clubs, pubs and event centres, and recreational venues were considered super-spreaders of the virus.

States and the FCT are to shut down all informal and formal festivity events including weddings, conferences, congresses, office parties, concerts, seminars, sporting activities.

Churches and Mosques should not be filled beyond 50 per cent of their installed capacity during worship and prayer time while face masks and social distancing are compulsory.
