Technology : iPhone 13 tipped to come with Wi-Fi upgrades for faster web access

We know the iPhone 13 is going to improve on the iPhone 12, but we're starting to get a better idea of the specific components that are in line for a performance boost – and it looks as though the Wi-Fi chip could be one of them.

According to the team at well-known industry analyst firm Barclays, via MacRumors, the iPhone 13 phones are likely to come with Wi-Fi 6E capabilities. That's a step up from the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard found on board this year's iPhones.

Barclays is basing its prediction on conversations with Apple hardware suppliers, so it seems to be well-sourced – though as usual with these sort of rumors, we'll have to wait until the phone is actually official to know for sure what it's going to bring.

As you might expect, Wi-Fi 6E offers faster data speeds and lower latencies, meaning both quicker access to the web and less interference from other devices when you're trying to get online. Augmented reality and virtual reality applications should also get a boost.

Technology : Microsoft may have 'bad news' for Intel

Microsoft may have more bad news for Intel as the company is possibly looking at replacing Intel chips with its own ARM-based chips for servers and Surface PCs.

As per a report by Bloomberg News, Microsoft is preparing its own ARM-based chips for servers providing Azure cloud services.

Microsoft is also looking at creating a new ARM-based chip for Surface PCs as well. However, there is no official word on the same.

Microsoft has been looking at alternatives to Intel chips for quite some time and worked with Qualcomm and AMD for Surface devices.

The company had also worked to create an ARM-based SQ1 and SQ2 processors for Surface devices. It also introduced AMD’s Ryzen series processors for Surface Laptop 3.

Technology : Facebook accuses Apple of anticompetitive behaviour over privacy changes

Facebook says although it disagrees with Apple’s approach, it would comply with the new rules and display a prompt.

Facebook Inc has accused rival, Apple Inc, of engaging in anticompetitive practices on Wednesday, firing another shot in a months long standoff between the two tech giants over Apple’s planned privacy changes for iOS14.

“Apple is behaving anticompetitively by using their control of the App Store to benefit their bottom line at the expense of creators and small businesses.

“Full stop,” Facebook Vice President for Ads and Business Products, Dan Levy, told reporters.

In response, Apple said its new rules will not require Facebook to change its “approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising,” but instead requires Facebook to give users on Apple devices a choice of whether to opt in to those practices.

“We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not,” Apple said in a statement.

The world’s biggest social media company ran full-page ads in major newspapers criticising Apple’s plans, which will limit apps’ ability to gather data from people’s phones that can be used for targeted advertising.

Facebook said in a blog post that Apple’s own personalised ad platform would be exempt from the new prompt requirement the iPhone maker is planning to impose on other companies.

Apple said in June that such activity will require a pop-up notification asking iOS users for “permission to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies,” which digital advertising firms expect most will decline.

Levy said that although Facebook disagreed with Apple’s approach, it would comply with the new rules and display a prompt. “We don’t have a choice if we want our app to be available in the App Store,” he said.

Technology : Honor V40 gets 3C certified with 66W charging

Honor is expected to unveil the V40 next month, which is reportedly codenamed YORK and has model designation YOK-AN10.

There's no official word from Honor about the V40 yet, but the smartphone has been certified by 3C, revealing 66W charging support in the process.

The V40 was initially rumored to have two versions - one powered by a Kirin SoC, and the other having a Mediatek chipset at the helm.

But the company is said to have scrapped the Kirin version and the phone will likely have Dimensity 1000+ under the hood.

The V40 is also rumored to pack a 120Hz screen and feature four or five cameras on the back, with the primary camera using a 50MP sensor.

More details about the Honor V40 should surface soon.

Entertainment : A Legacy of Protest and Hope

How the 17 Artists on Global Citizen’s ‘STAND UP’ Album Are Part of Something Bigger

When it comes to movements that altered the course of history, the last three years may very well come to be defined as generational: a time when Black Lives Matter, #EndSARS, Fridays for Future, and #MeToo completely changed the direction of people-powered protests.

But what does a movement sound like? The world has come a long way from Band Aid. Today, music about police brutality, the climate crisis, and female solidarity is no longer left on the fringes. Greta Thuberg opens pop-rock albums, now. Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” — a perfect work of art about state violence and racial injustice — was the best music video of 2018 by a mile. Beyoncé brought the aesthetic of the Black Panthers all the way to the Super Bowl.

That grip on mainstream culture is informed by a rich history of music intertwined with activism — a legacy honoured by STAND UP, an album from Global Citizen that touches on all these movements in some form, executive produced by Grammy-winning R&B legend Raphael Saadiq, in partnership with Parlophone Records and Atlantic Records.

Entertainment : Eminem uses song to say sorry to Rihanna for backing Chris Brown

Eminem has used a new song to apologise to Rihanna for "siding" with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, who assaulted her in 2009.

Eminem raps on his track Zeus: "And wholeheartedly apologies Rihanna for that song that leaked/I'm sorry, Rih, it wasn't meant to cause you grief."

He was referring to a decade-old song that leaked in 2019, on which he said "of course I side with Chris Brown".

Zeus appears on Eminem's surprise album Music to be Murdered By Side B.

The album, which accompanies January's Music to be Murdered By, was released on Friday.

At the time the track leaked last year, Eminem's spokesperson said: "This is a leak of something that's over 10 years old. After Eminem recorded it, he scrapped it, and rewrote it."

  • Eminem defends controversial lyrics

On his new track, he admitted the original lyric "was wrong of me".

Brown pleaded guilty to the assault in 2009, and received five years probation and a community service order.

Eminem and Rihanna have collaborated several times, including on 2010's US number one single Love the Way You Lie, as well as Numb on her 2012 album Unapologetic and The Monster from The Marshall Mathers LP 2 in 2013.

The rapper's new album features collaborations with Dr Dre, Ty Dolla $ign, J Premier and Skylar Gray.
