NEWS : Ezekwesili presents research findings on how to fix politics in Nigeria

Obiageli Ezekwesili has presented findings from her fellowship research on how to fix politics in Nigeria and Africa more broadly.

Ezekwesili, in a statement on Thursday, said she invited 124 Nigerians from diverse fields of endeavour and geopolitical zones to collaborate on designing the research findings.

The former Education Minister pointed out that politics in Nigeria was not fulfilling the core requirement of a democratic system, which was to provide good governance for the common wellbeing of citizens.

“My research findings primarily reinforce that the poor state of affairs in Nigeria is the consequence of the quality of politics at play. Politics is at the heart of everything any society can or will become. The essential process of democracy is not complete without politics,” she said.

Ezekwesili established primarily that in a democratic system, there are three triangular pillars which determine the kind of outcomes that politics will produce for the people.

The ex-World Bank vice president said, “On the right angle or demand side of the triangle is the electorate; on the left or supply side is the politicians, political class and parties; and at the top is the regulatory – constitutional, legal, electoral and institutional context within which the politics happen.

“Every pillar or angle of the triangle must function effectively and concurrently with the other two to enable the right quality of politics that will deliver strong economic performance for a people.

“In evaluating the outcome of politics in Nigeria and Africa, my study established that the quality of the electorate, quality of political class and quality and lack of independence and capacity of political institutions constitute a structural and systemic problem for democracy and must therefore be fixed by citizens,” Ezekwesili said.

Her research found that Nigeria is ridden with politicians without competing ideas of how to solve the problems of citizens, who lack a culture of public service and subordinate the common good to their personal and narrow interests.

“The constitutional, legal, institutional and regulatory environment is compromised by the political class to more frequently act without independence, fairness and adherence to the rule of law. The political space is thus completely monopolised by the supply side of governance, that is the political class, thereby, causing political, economic and social stagnation for the nation and people.”

The government critic noted that currently in Nigeria politics, voters generally lack the level of influence necessary to compel the right political processes and good outcomes that serve the good of all in society.

“The bright prospect is that evidence from the #FixPolitics research shows that citizens are the only angle of the triangle that can act and propel systemic change by collectively and decisively acting for their common good.”

To alter the status quo, Ezekwesili said only the electorate “have the incentive to correct the abnormality in a political system.”

She added, “It is the collective effort of citizens that can change the quality of political class and compel the kind of constitutional and electoral changes required to achieve good governance.”

Former President Felipe Calderon of Mexico observed an enormous gap between the interests of the citizens and that of the politicians, which he saw as a major problem to a democratic setting.

“To fix politics in Nigeria, the citizens and the politicians must work together and represent the same in practical life. Citizens must change their perception of politics and political participation rather than holding to a view that politics is for corrupt and dishonest people.”

Calderon declared that corrupt people are the opposite of what politics stands.

“To fix politics is what happens when the people participate and take responsibility to provide political participation with ethical sense and ethical parameters,” he added.

Former President of Malawi, Dr. Joyce Banda, said politics should be seen as an inclusive love affair and if institutionally implemented, “Africa will witness a great change in its democratic system.”

NEWS : US electionTrump blocks Joe Biden’s presidency transition

President Donald Trump has blocked government officials from cooperating with President-elect Joe Biden’s team in preparation for a transition, CNN reports.

This is after the US Attorney General, William Barr yesterday authorised the Justice Department to investigate Trump’s allegations of election fraud during the November 3 election

Bob Bauer, Biden’s campaign lawyer, who lamented the development said the Attorney General’s decision to authorize investigations “will only fuel the ‘specious, speculative, fanciful or far-fetched claims’ he professes to guard against.”

Trump also has the backing of some key members of his political party including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who rallied efforts to fight the election results.

There are doubts on whether the US would witness the same kind of smooth transition of power that has long anchored its democracy.

The Electoral College is expected to take a final decision on Biden’s victory on December 14

However, Trump government is yet to invite the President-elect to the White House as is the tradition.

It has been a time-honoured tradition that represents a peaceful transition in the US for sitting presidents and Vice Presidents and their successors to meet

CNN reports that there are no plans for Trump to invite the President-elect to the White House in the coming days.

This means Joe Biden cannot access additional funds for his transition team, and he has not been cleared to receive intelligence briefings, both touchstones of the formal transition process.

NEWS : Trump vs Biden Georgia to recount US election ballots by hand

The U.S. state of Georgia would conduct a full manual recount of the Nov. 3 presidential election ballots in each county (local government area).

Announcing this at a news briefing on Wednesday, Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, announced this at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He stated that the recount was necessitated by the close margin between the two major contenders.

President-elect Joe Biden is leading incumbent President Donald Trump with 2,471,906 to 2,457,794 votes, representing a difference of 14,111 votes.

“With the margin so close between them it will require a full by hand recount in each county.

According to him, “This will help build confidence. It will be an audit, a recount and a recanvass all at once.

“It will be a heavy lift, but we will work with the counties to get this done in time for our state certification.”

The Secretary of State added that the result of the audit would be certified by Nov. 20, which is Georgia’s deadline to do so.

The decision is coming hours after Trump’s campaign organisation and the Georgia Republican Party demanded a hand recount before the results were certified.

Details of US, Nigeria, 82 countries’ meeting on terrorism

The United States and Nigeria convened a virtual meeting with members of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS on Tuesday.

In attendance were other West African states and relevant regional organizations.

The parley discussed the threat of ISIS and ways the coalition can contribute to collective efforts to quell ISIS in the region.

Participants reviewed potential lines of effort, including the use of battlefield evidence and border security measures.

There were sessions on understanding and countering the threat, moderated by U.S. Special Envoy for the Sahel, Ambassador J. Peter Pham.

Representatives from Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Niger and Nigeria provided insights on troubling developments of ISIS affiliate activity in West Africa.

The countries suggested ways the coalition could enhance efforts to counter the trends.

A State Department statement said it was the first of such meeting for Nathan A. Sales, Coordinator for Counterterrorism.

The Ambassador is the new Special Envoy for the Global Coalition.

Sales outlined the increasing focus on defeating ISIS’s global branches and affiliates.

The senior official expressed appreciation to the Nigerian delegation, led by Rear Admiral Yaminu E. Musa, Coordinator for the Counter Terrorism Centre, for co-hosting the event.

Mauritania’s accession into the coalition as the 83rd member was announced.

Since January 2017, the body has welcomed 14 new members from Africa and Asia.

ISWAP was formed after several terrorist leaders and members broke out from Boko Haram in 2015.

Since then, the ISIS affiliate in West Africa, has wreaked havoc in Nigeria and its neighbours.

ISWAP has murdered hundreds, including civilians and soldiers, in dozens of heinous attacks.

In February, the United Nations (UN) added that the sect and ISIS-Greater Sahara (ISIS-GS) to its terrorist designations list.

America, in a statement by the State Department spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus, hailed the decision.

Ortagus recalled that the U.S. designated ISWAP and ISIS-GS as Foreign Terrorist Organizations on May 23, 2018 and February 28, 2018, respectively.

Okonjo Iweala made to wait as WTO cancels meeting on appointment

Nigeria’s Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will have to wait to know her fate as the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This is because a meeting of the organisation originally scheduled for Monday, November 9 on the issue has been postponed.

Okonjo-Iweala had been proposed by a WTO nominations committee on October 28 for the job, only for the United States to veto the recommendation.

It is, however, believed that the postponement of Monday’s meeting is due to the fresh surge in the spread of COVID-19 and restrictions being imposed in some countries which may prevent some delegates from attending.

US election 2020: Trump is like Biafra – Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has stated that the incumbent President of the United States, Donald Trump is like the defunct Biafra Republic.

Nnamdi Kanu, in a Facebook post on Saturday, claimed that the plots to rig Trump out of office, through a system known as ‘Deep State’, was perfected in the last four years.

The IPOB leader said that all the polling and tech companies are behind what he described as the incoming reign of darkness.

According to Kanu, those that want to see man marry their fellow men and similar laws want Trump to go.

Nnamdi Kanu noted that even the church is against President Trump because he is a man of truth and action.

He said, “It’s proven, truth and righteousness alone no longer save the just. Trump is like Biafra. The world knows the truth but prefers the lies.”
