Biafra Christians being killed— IPOB asks US to appoint special envoy on Nigeria

IPOB asks US to appoint special envoy for Nigeria over 'killing of ...

BIAFRA A group of coordinators of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the United States says the country should appoint a special envoy to the Lake Chad region, alleging that Christians are being killed there.

In a letter to Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, the group alleged that “Biafra Christians” are being targeted in incessant killings in the region and other parts of the country.

The IPOB coordinators accused “extremists” of spearheading the attacks which it said the federal government has failed to address.

It made reference to the report by the United Kingdom All-Party Parliamentary Group on International Religious Freedom or Belief, a group made up of  British parliamentarians, which said Christians are being targeted because of their faith in Nigeria.

The letter dated July 6 and signed by Clement Okoro, the group’s national coordinator in the US, read: “We write to you as the United States coordinators for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organization that represents the social, political, and economic interests of Biafrans in Nigeria.

“These issues have been compounded by the Nigerian government’s inability and unwillingness to hold violent perpetrators accountable for their actions.

“As Biafrans who live and work in America but remain immensely concerned about the state of our homeland, we urge you to consider appointing a Special Envoy to the Lake Chad region who can hold the Nigerian government accountable for its harmful actions and equally detrimental inaction.

“Our concerns have also been echoed by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, a group of British lawmakers from across the ideological spectrum established to raise awareness of and defend against religious freedom abuses around the world. Last month, the APPG released a report titled, Nigeria: Unfolding Genocide, which provided recommendations to prevent the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

“While the report noted that issues like resource competition, population growth, and climate change have contributed to the farmer-herder conflict, it highlighted extremist ideology and government mismanagement as the main sources of conflict, emphasizing, “the inability of the Nigerian Federal and State Governments to protect Christian farmers, and the lack of political will to respond adequately to warnings or to bring perpetrators of violence to justice, has fostered feelings of victimization and persecution.”

The group said in addition to appointing a special envoy in response to the alleged attack, the US should also conduct a study to highlight the issues and hold the Nigerian government accountable.

“The IPOB strongly supports this request, as we believe the only way to prevent the Nigerian government from allowing these attacks and human rights violations to continue with impunity is rigorous oversight conducted by a well- respected third party, like a Special Envoy,” it said.

“People around the world look to the United States as a defender of human rights and democratic values, and we strongly believe that American oversight in the region would promote stability and save lives.”

The press statement was distributed by Mercury Public Affairs, the US lobbying firm.

BIAFRA : We decrypted messages from the Biafran war that have remained secret for 50 years

We decrypted messages from the Biafran war that have remained ...

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Biafran conflict in 1970.

The trigger for the conflict was the proclamation by Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu on 30 May 1967 that Biafra had become a republic. After 30 months of war, Biafra surrendered and was once again incorporated into Nigeria.

According to the author John de St Jorre, between half a million and a million Nigerians died, mainly from starvation, during the war.

Through the efforts of their roving diplomats during the war, Biafra achieved recognition from the states of TanzaniaGabonHaitiIvory Coast, and Zambia. But the fledgling state struggled to secure wider diplomatic support. It also found it difficult to purchase weapons and smuggle them into its controlled territory via airlift.

The efforts of these diplomats have recently come to light through the decryption of telexes sent from Portugal to Biafra during the war. Telex, short for teleprinter exchange, was a method for transmitting messages electronically over land lines or radio. Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, had become the centre for Biafran diplomacy in Europe because the government of Portugal under António de Oliveira Salazar supported Biafra with air landing and communication privileges. Paris and London were also key centres for Biafran diplomats.

In our paper we set out what was in the encrypted messages, and how we solved them. Three of us worked on the project, each with different disciplines – a mathematician, a computer scientist and a radio technologist. We used manual and computerised cryptanalysis methods to decipher a series of transposition ciphers sent by Biafran officials in 1968 and 1969.

It took us three months to figure out how the encryption worked and what keys were used. We also needed to read about the context of the war to understand and interpret the messages. The historical figures were unfamiliar to us and many codewords were used for people, countries and objects.

In the end, the decrypted messages provided a treasure trove of information about how men and women working for the breakaway state in Europe tried to garner support for Biafra from afar during the war.

Decades long decryption project

At the time, the Biafrans sent some of their messages in plain English text and made some extra effort to encrypt some in order to ensure that at least casual eavesdroppers couldn’t read the encrypted ones. However, they made mistakes which meant that professional as well as amateur eavesdroppers could have read them.

We know of at least two professional organisations that did intercept them: the Swedish signals intelligence agency, the FRA, and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Some were also intercepted by at least one amateur radio operator, Frode Weierud, in Oslo, a co-author of our academic paper.

At the end of July 1969 Weierud discovered a signal in the shortwave band transmitting a regular message in radioteletype: “This is Biscaia testing to LDA/3”.

Using teleprinter devices, he was able to intercept a series of messages from the station “Biscaia”. The messages were initially in understandable English, but soon they started arriving in ciphertext, in both five-letter and five-figure groups.

These messages were from a telex link between Biafra and Lisbon. During the war, Biafra had only one telex machine. It was the only communications link to and from the outside world. The machine was moved around Biafra depending on what territory was controlled.

The unencrypted, or “plaintext” messages sent over the link were often intended for wider distribution via Biafra’s public relations firm in Geneva, Markpress. The encrypted messages were between Biafran diplomats in European cities and the leaders of Biafra and were not intended for public distribution.

Although Weierud tried to decipher the messages in 1974 and wrote to a cryptography journal about them in 1978, the messages remained publicly undeciphered until he published them on his website in 2019. A Swedish signals intelligence veteran, Jan-Olof Grahn, also described the content of some messages in a 2019 book.

After Weierud published the messages, I joined him, as did George Lasry, a computer scientist from Israel, to decipher the messages. This was a difficult task as the cipher system was unknown. In fact, we used advanced computer algorithms, and also needed to improve them, to decipher some of the more challenging traffic. We also had to resort to manual methods at some points, writing out the letters on strips of paper and rearranging them by hand to form readable English

The task took many hours across all the messages. In general, the task for a code breaker is easier when more “ciphertext”, or encrypted messages, are available. The Swedish intelligence agency would have made short work of the messages, given the great number of messages intercepted by their superior equipment and the regular nature of the messages.

For instance, each message begins with the word “SECRET” followed by the name of the sender and recipient, which is given in both plain and ciphertext. If the codebreaker knows a particular phrase like this, called a “crib”, occurs in the plaintext, this can make the process of deciphering much easier.

Being able to see the original texts allows for a more accurate record of history, as the messages offer a contemporary, first person view into the conflict. Later accounts may well be whitewashed or self-serving by contrast.

What we found

The broad subjects covered by the messages included travel arrangements, arms deals, expenses and public relations.

The longest message was from Austine Okwu, the Biafran representative to Tanzania, to Colonel Ojukwu about taking the Biafran cause to the United Nations General Assembly. Other key characters in the messages were Christopher Mojekwu, described as “Ojukwu’s closest confidant of all”, and Chris Onyekwelu, Ojukwu’s brother-in-law.

One of the messages referred to members of the delegation bringing Biafra into disrepute by not being able to pay their hotel or telephone bills. The leaders urged frugality in the message.

Other messages referred to logistics, travel and shipments. For instance, one message from Mojekwu to Ojukwu referred to a weapons transfer and contacting “Achebe” – perhaps referring to the famous author.

Another message from October 1969 referred to the possibility of flights for salt and meat, and the extension of a hospital under the direction of Edgar Ritchie, an Irish obstetrician.

What next

Many of the cities and characters are still obscured by acronyms or codewords and remain to be identified, such as “HY” and “Chabert”. On the other hand, we were able to identify a whole series of other codewords concerning places because the plaintext described public events using codewords.

The key to the solutions was increased by computer power, storage, improved algorithms and international collaboration. The five-figure ciphers remain unsolved for any readers who want a challenge; although if a “one-time pad” encryption system has been used correctly, they may never be solved. Such a system provides perfect security if certain conditions are met.

In contrast, the system used would not have provided security to a determined eavesdropper. This gave us a rare window to see diplomatic communication – often protected by strong encryption – in action. To listen in, intelligence agencies either break the codes or insert a “backdoor” into the machines used.

Apart from being a fascinating project, we also believe the messages we decrypted provide a useful complement to the later written accounts of the participants in the war.

BIAFRA : Igbo must love themselves before becoming Nigeria’s president – Arthur Eze

Foremost Nigerian philanthropist and oil mogul, Prince Arthur Eze says Igbo must love themselves and be willing to support each other if they want to be president of Nigeria in 2023.

Eze who spoke to journalists in his country home, Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State said Igbo indigenes cannot be president if they continue to dislike and fight each other at every given time.

“We must love ourselves before we can become president of Nigeria. Politicians are causing hatred in Igbo land, they find it difficult to work with each other. Each desires to work for their own selfish interest.

“Another thing is that we must see a way to work with northerners. I love northern leaders and they love me too. They are very easy to deal with. When I was struggling to be somebody in life, they took me in with trust.

“Only God can find the kind of Igbo man that has the character to help. Without that kind of character, we cannot unite to become president of Nigeria. That is why the north is succeeding, and we need to liaise with them too to be able to become president in 2023.

“I didn’t know Abubakar Rimi or Solomon Lar when they gave me contracts to equip their state TV in those days. The north also introduced me into oil business without knowing me or who I was. That is the spirit I want our people to imbibe,” Eze said.

Speaking on the Anambra governorship election which comes up in 2021, Eze said his only interest in who becomes the governor was to find one who has the interest of the state at heart and ready to sacrifice for her.”

Speaking on the recent argument on the zoning of Anambra governorship position to the south, the businessman said he was more interested in supporting a good man for the governorship position than supporting one for reason of where they hail from, but added that he supports a minority zone more.

“As for zoning, I believe that the people who have not been privileged should be given the chance, let them have the opportunity; provided that there is a good human being in that area; not a criminal that will deal with the people when he acquires power.

“Any man from the minority who has not gotten that power should be allowed. This is because if you don’t do that, God can change. God can change situations anytime.”

BIAFRA : Kanu faults Buhari’s aide over Biafra

Latest Nnamdi Kanu News

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, on Saturday disagreed with the statement credited to the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina that Muhammadu Buhari was not against the people of Biafra.

Kanu described such a statement as “a complete falsehood”, adding that “it can only deceive the gullible but certainly not those familiar with history.”

The IPOB leader who spoke in a statement by his Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful maintained that Biafra citizens had suffered enough persecution and killings at slightest provocation on several occasions.

“The truth rather, is that people of Biafra have continued to be victims of state persecution and calculated elimination.

Biafrans have been slaughtered at the slightest provocation on several occasions since the unholy amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914.

Nigeria Government and her partners in crime are sponsoring the killings and heartless massacre of Biafrans since 1945 till date.

“Ordinary designating the killer herdsmen terrorists has become a difficult task for the Federal Government which ironically tagged unarmed IPOB a terror group with the speed of light.

How does a government which pampers globally acknowledged terror groups but suppresses and kills peaceful agitators want to prove its innocence of bloodshed?”,he queried.

“On their unsubstantiated claims of being the best thing that has happened to Ndi Igbo, IPOB is challenging Femi Adesina, Arthur Eze and their likes in this Government to show Nigerians, Biafrans and World at large what they did and where this government and cabals sited any tangible federal project in Biafraland.

“It is very appalling that the Federal Government would not show where their imaginary projects are located in the South East since 5 years this government took over office on 29th of May 2015.

We wonder why Nigeria government will claim to have executed 69 different projects, and spent N680 billion in South East alone without showing or mentioning where those projects are sited.

“We are leaving Nigeria in the shortest possible time. Time for this fake, concocted and deceptive news has gone and there is nothing anybody can do to change our resolve to restore Biafra freedom and independence from Nigeria.

It is still fresh in our memory how this present Federal Government led by Buhari and his cabals killed innocent, peaceful and unarmed members of IPOB in Aba, Onitsha, Nkpor, Umuahia, Asaba, Igweocha, Enugu, Owerri and other cities. The killings have continued unabated,” he added.

BIAFRA : We do not expect everybody to support Biafra agitation – Kanu

Kanu accuses police, army of invading lawyer’s home

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnmadi Kanu on Sunday vowed they are prepared to sacrifice the last drop of their blood to restore Biafra saying he does not expect everybody that bears a Biafran name to support wholeheartedly the move IPOB is making to ensure that freedom is restored in Igboland.

“We urge the good people of Biafra not to be unduly burdened when certain comments designed to pander to the Fulani Caliphate are uttered by some individuals or politicians as we march ever so remorselessly to our destination which is freedom for Biafra.

Kanu said in a statement by his Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful  that these misguided individuals should therefore be pitied rather than condemned.

“Our position against the flawed foundational structures upon which our British colonial masters constructed the fraudulent edifice Flora Shaw originally named Nigga-area later anglicised to Nigeria by her lover Frederick Luggard must not be allowed to stand.

“It doesn’t matter what ignorant neo-colonial slaves say or do, the Fulani Caliphate will continue to use unity of Nigeria as an excuse to continue their age long camping of mass murder, genocide and ethnic cleansing as millions watch on impotently under the guise of keeping a British colonial product one.”

He said: “Each person is entitled to his or her opinion about whether to be a free soul or to continue living as the glorified slave. For us in IPOB, we have chosen to be free but we shall let those that wish to be enslaved to continue to do so till eternity. It’s all about choice.”

He reiterated that “we are not expecting every person to support Biafra agitation  as long as we know that currently 99.9 per cent of our people are in support of the movement IPOB is making towards our quest for Biafra independence.

“We are not perturbed by the utterances of a few compromised politicians and their shameless agents, who because of their desire to please their slave masters, are ever ready to sabotage our collective interest. A million of them cannot deter us in our quest and unstoppable march to restore Biafra in the shortest possible time.”

“We are equally aware that Biafran politicians serving Nigeria in Abuja and other places took an oath to be ‘faithful, loyal and honest’ to Nigeria which for some of them means subjugating their fellow citizens to the devilish whims of the caliphate masters in core north.  So, we expect them to honour their pledge the same way those of us serving Biafra in different capacities have pledged to serve her with the last drop of our blood and make sure it comes into existence in our time.

“The ungodly statements from Biafra politicians is an encouragement to us because it only serves to fire up our determination to restore our lost identity and freedoms. We quite understand that they are under the influence of whatever it is their masters fed to them but in time they shall all be put to shame or worse.

“IPOB is well organised the world over and solidly built on an immovable rock.  Mere words cannot change our strategy nor will it dent our resolve to restore Biafra in every truth and honesty. But our assurance to them is that in the end, they will regret their actions. The day of reckoning is fast approaching.”

BIAFRA : We’re in talks with UN for Biafra referendum –IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, on Tuesday, claimed to be in talks with the United Nations to hold a referendum for a sovereign state of Biafra.

The claim was contained in a statement by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful.

Powerful said IPOB was making efforts for the referendum any moment soon.

Promising that the exercise would be peaceful, the group said everybody resident within Biafra territory would vote according to their conscience.

He said, “It is quite clear and understandable to every citizen of Biafra and indeed the entire world that we need a referendum, where the people will exercise their right on whether or not they want self-rule or continued existence within Nigeria.

“A UN-supervised referendum is a must and a right for every human being in Nigeria to unequivocally state where they wish to belong.

“We in IPOB and Biafrans in general expect the United Nations to supervise this referendum, which will enable even those living beyond the boundaries of Biafra to equally determine their own fate. We want freedom for all, not just for Biafrans alone.”

BIAFRA : Referendum now to decide Biafra nation -IPOB

Fulani Radio: IPOB, MASSOB, other Igbo groups kick

Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has hinged the realisation of a Biafra nation on referendum to be strictly supervised by the United Nations (UN).

A statement by the spokesman of the group, Emma Powerful, yesterday, said the move is to allow the people decide  if they still need Biafra or want to remain in Nigeria.

“UN supervised referendum is a must and a right for every human being in Nigeria to unequivocally state where they wish to belong. We in IPOB and Biafrans in general expect the United Nations to supervise this referendum which will enable even those living beyond the boundaries of Biafra to equally determine their own fate. We want freedom for all not just for Biafrans alone. IPOB is making frantic efforts to ensure that this happens in shortest possible time.

“We are not going to force or intimidate anyone or tribe because the will of the people is sacrosanct and must be respected. Each individual will be allowed to decide for themselves where they wish to belong.

“The raging Biafra agitation led by our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a divine project and we are confident of securing over 99.9 percent approval any day a referendum is held because more tribes and clans outside the South-East and South South are indicating interest to be recognised as Biafrans.
