SPORTS : Tuchel gives up on Haaland, ready to sign Lewandowski

Chelsea are giving up in their bid to sign Borussia Dortmund striker, Erling Haaland, according to the UK Sun.

The Blues will instead turn their attention to Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Thomas Tuchel is desperate to bring in a prolific new number nine this summer and had made Haaland his top target.

But Dortmund would only listen to an offer of around £175 million for the Norway international.

That has forced Chelsea to return to the drawing board and revive their interest in Lewandowski.

The Poland international enjoyed a stunning campaign last season, breaking Gerd Muller’s long-standing record by scoring 41 times.

Despite turning 33 next month, Tuchel now regards the experienced frontman as “his best option” in a difficult transfer market and could be the ideal signing to finish the hoard of chances his side created last season.

Lewandowski is contracted to Bayern until 2023 and a bid of £50 million would be required to land the striker.

Rangers vs Arsenal: Gunners fail to win another pre-season match

Arsenal on Saturday failed to beat Rangers in their second pre-season friendly tie at Ibrox.

Rangers took the lead in the first half through a header from Nigerian defender Leon Balogun following a brilliant delivery from James Tavernier.

Arsenal, however, levelled through new signing Nuno Tavares after he capatilised on a Tavernier’s mistake.

Jermain Defoe was a casualty for Rangers as he came off with a muscle injury in the first half of the encounter.

Rangers were under pressure for large parts of the second half but they took the lead again from another set piece.

Glenn Middleton delivered a brilliant ball into Arsenal box that was met by the head of Cedric Itten who powered the ball into the back of the net to give Steven Gerrard’s men a 2-1 lead.

But Eddie Nketiah levelled for Mikel Arteta’s men on the 83rd minute after capatilising on a mistake from Middleton as the game eventually ended 2-2 after normal time.

Christian Eriksen: UEFA under attack over midfielder’s condition

Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, has criticised UEFA for their ‘ridiculous’ decision to play on with Denmark’s Euro 2020 tie against Finland on Saturday after Christian Eriksen’s collapse.

The Inter Milan midfielder dropped to the ground towards the end of the first half and required CPR treatment from medical staff on the pitch.

Denmark players, who formed a protective shield around Eriksen even as he was treated, were visibly disturb and in pain.

Eriksen was eventually rushed to hospital and UEFA subsequently confirmed that the game would continue as Finland defeated Denmark 1-0, thanks to Joel Pohjanpalo’s only goal of the match.

Euro 2020: Danish FA provides update on Christian Eriksen’s condition

But Schmeichel has now hit out at UEFA for offering the players few options.

“I want to put on record that it is absolutely ridiculous that UEFA comes up with a solution like that,” Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Something terrible happens and UEFA gives the players an option to go out and play the game the last 55 minutes or whatever it was or come back at 12 o’clock today, I mean, what kind of option is that?

“So you go back to your hotel, in the case for the Danes are 45 minutes away, you cannot sleep, you might not even sleep because watching trauma like that has a massive effect on you of course and then get back on the team bus at 8 to play the rest of the game.

“It was not an option, it was a ridiculous decision by UEFA and they should have tried to work out a different scenario and show a bit of compassion and they didn’t.”

According to Fani-Kayode: “MKO Abiola funded the coup that removed Buhari from power in 1985 yet it was the same people he put in power that year that annulled his election as President 8 years later in 1993. What an irony! Again the same Buhari he removed from power in 1985 was the one that, 35 years later.

“Once back in power, apologised for the annulment of his 1993 presidential election and mandate even though he had no hand in it and immortalised his name by declaring June 12th Democracy Day. This is instructive! No matter what u say or think about Buhari, he did well on this one.”

Buhari recently changed Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in commemoration of Abiola, following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election he won.

EndSARS protesters wanted to remove me as president – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that last year’s EndSARS protests against police brutality, were aimed at removing him from office.

Buhari stated this while appearing on Arise TV on Thursday morning.

He also blamed the protests on the dwindling inflow of foreign direct investment to the country.

The president insisted that those who participated in the protests, have made Nigeria unattractive to investors.

Buhari was asked how he can improve foreign direct investment (FDI) to Nigeria.

In response he said: “This question was answered last year when there was the #EndSARS protest last year. You remember the young people that wanted to march here and remove me?”

The president added: “Tell the young people to behave themselves and make the country safe, then we can attract real investors to the country”.

Nnamdi Kanu orders IPOB to destabilize Nigeria using Twitter – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has lamented that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is using Twitter to destabilize Nigeria.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, disclosed this at an interview with BBC News Africa.

Mohammed noted that Kanu uses Twitter to direct members of IPOB to attack policemen, soldiers, correctional centres and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The minister lamented that Twitter has failed to sanction the IPOB leader for using the platform to destabilize Nigeria.

Lai Mohammed said, “IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu in particular, his platform of choice to destabilise the country is Twitter.

“Twitter is actually the platform of choice for the separatist leader who resides outside Nigeria but issues directives for his members to attack the symbols of authority such as policemen, soldiers, correctional centres, electoral offices.

“This has been done willfully and consistently without consequences using always the Twitter platform.”

The Minister had last week disclosed the ban on Twitter in Nigeria.

Nigeria vs Twitter: Only Biden can face Buhari – US Intel expert, Matthew Page

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari may not reverse the ban on Twitter unless United States President Joe Biden intervenes in the standoff which entered day 6 today.

Former US intelligence community’s top Nigeria specialist, Matthew Page, said this in an interview with in reaction to the latest demand by the world power.

Samantha Power, currently the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator, illustrated Nigeria’s action against the company as ‘an aggression against free speech’.

The ex-US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) affirmed that nearly 40 million Nigerians use Twitter, and that “the country is home to Africa’s largest tech hub”.

“This suspension is nothing more than state-sanctioned denial of free speech and should be reversed immediately”, Power requested.

Twitter is an American microblogging and social networking service.

The 44-year-old CEO, Jack Dorsey, visited Nigeria in November 2019.

Asked if the US government may decide to retaliate, Page said that going by the current attitude of the Biden administration, there may be no reprisal.

The associate fellow of the Chatham House Africa Programme in London said he was seeing “a very muted response”.

“I’ve witnessed the internal hand-wringing and reluctance to levy visa bans in much clearer situations, e.g. specific senior officials engaging in corruption or human rights abuses.

“Since this is government policy, any policy move by the US would have to target the state itself, and I don’t see the Embassy officials (at least) having the wherewithal to do that.

“The only way that would change is if someone very senior, President Biden or the Secretary of State, insisted that steps be taken and thereby clarified what the US response to Buhari’s decision should be”, the expert said.

Nigerian authorities sanctioned Twitter for deleting the President’s tweet after several citizens reported it for violating the rules of the social media platform.

Angered by incessant attacks on government facilities and the murder of dozens of security operatives in the South-East, Buhari said the perpetrators did not witness the carnage that occurred during the 1967 -1970 Civil War.

“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand”, he fumed.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has been directed to license all social media operations.

The NBC will also ensure that broadcast stations – Television and Radio – do not use Twitter until further notice. There will be penalties for the defaulters.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has gone to court in protest of the alleged “repression of human rights, freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom”.

He said, ”I told them to tell the youths if they want jobs they should behave themselves, make Nigeria secure so that people can come and invest.

“Youths should behave themselves to make Nigeria secure and they will get jobs because Nobody can invest in an unsecured environment,” Buhari said.

It’ll be idiotic to break Nigeria – Obasanjo tackles IPOB, Yoruba nation agitators

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has tackled proponents of the Yoruba and Biafra nations, saying it is “almost idiotic” to push for Nigeria’s disintegration at a period that Africa gears towards political, social and economic reintegration.”

Obasanjo, spoke Wednesday at the luncheon and investiture of Kehinde Isijola as the new Ogun State Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyor (NIS), held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta.

The former Nigerian leader conceded that the situation remains unpalatable in Nigeria; he, however, said disintegration of the country is never the solution.

Obasanjo opined that Nigerians should blame themselves for the worst of the country instead of blaming God.

The Balogun Owu said everybody in Nigeria is apprehensive over the state of the nation, saying anyone who is not apprehensive is a human being without being human.

He stated that “Any Nigerian who is human will be apprehensive about security, economy, political situation and the drum of disintegration of the country.”

The ex-President prided himself as “a strong believer of one Nigeria, but not one Nigeria at any cost.”

The statesman advocated for one Nigeria where every Nigerian feels proud that he or she has a stake in Nigeria.

Obasanjo posited that citizens of Biafra and Yoruba nations will be diminished compared being citizens of Nigeria, stressing that “our strength is in our diversity,”

“In this age and time that we are talking about the reintegration of Africa for economic development, disintegration of any country will be almost idiotic,” he added.
