BIAFRA NEWS : Nnamdi Kanu happy with Biafra Republic Government in Exile – Ekpa insists

Popular Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa has debunked claims made by an American lawyer, Bruce Fein, alleging that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, is displeased with the Biafra Republic Government in Exile.

In a quick rejoinder to the purported claims, through his official Twitter handle on Tuesday, Ekpa, the Finland-based lawyer who doubled as the Prime Minister of BRGIE, said Mazi Kanu is happy with the movement’s achievements.

He described Fein as a fake representative that has not achieved anything for Biafra in the past two years.

Ekpa noted that over 70 million people, including himself, fully support Nnamdi Kanu and the quest to achieve Biafra.

He noted that Nnamdi still required medical attention due to injuries he had sustained from torture under detention by the Department of State Security Service, DSS.

Recall that Kanu was re-arrested in 2019 by the Nigerian Government. Despite several court orders, President Muhammadu Buhari’s government refused to grant him bail.

“I have just been informed that MNK is pleased and very happy with the achievement of BRGIE so far. However, he still needs medical attention and surgery because of the physical torture by the DSS. He is a leader of over 70 million people, including myself. Nigeria’s terrorist Government has violated all human rights laws in MMK’s case. They continue to deny him access to physicians; they refuse to release even when the court has discharged him”, he wrote.

“Biafra Republic Government In-Exile is registered, approved and legal. Agent of Nigeria, take note! Bruce Fein Esq will remain a loser and a failure!

“Bruce Fein is inconsequential in Biafra Liberation; No, nobody is paying him a dime again. We were told his fee was 400k dollars; Biafrans distributed money to him and had nothing to show. He was receiving 50k to 60 per month. I promise him that he can not receive any dime from Biafrans again. The Fake representative has done nothing for the past two years. He travelled to Nigeria 5 good times to enjoy the hotel. He collected 50k dollars for each trip to Nigeria and did nothing. If that is not criminality, what else is criminality? At one point, he started participating in fundraising for his trip to Nigeria. By taking advantage of the situation and those who contracted him, he defrauded Biafrans”, he wrote.

In a related development, Fein came under attack on Twitter by Biafrans, displeased with his comment on BRGIE.

See reactions as follow;

@Udoka_mazi:

He needs to pay back all the money he collected to do a job for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, which he did not do; he is just onyibo 419. He is supposed to join Hushpuppy in prison for defrauding Biafrans.

@Victoriaifeom13:

Bruce Fein and his group wanted to milk Biafrans dry but thank God for our prime minister, Mazi Simon Ekpa, De good guy, the wise One, who was 10 miles ahead of them

@GDwakr1:

And look at what we have achieved in a few months without paying criminals like him. BRGIE and all Autopilot are working for the interest of the Biafra people and will continue to do so until Biafra is free from the Zoo. Because it’s a Call of Duty to serve the motherland.

BIAFRA NEWS : Tinubu urged to disregard Buhari’s ignominy, release Nnamdi Kanu

President Bola Tinubu has been urged to ignore the ignominy of his predecessor, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s Special Counsel, made the call while describing Buhari’s disregard for the rule of law as staggering.

Ejimakor noted that Kanu’s continued detention without charges was a disregard for the rule of law.

Tweeting, Ejimakor wrote: “From today to the next few days, I will do a series of Tweets inspired by Onyendu #MNK when I last visited him on Thursday.

“It’s his wish that I do so & I shall comply enthusiastically. Here’s the first Tweet: ‘Detention without any charge is the defining feature of a banana republic.

“The Buhari regime’s disregard for basic tenets of the rule of law is staggering. President Tinubu should not emulate such ignominy.

“When you don’t have any charge against a man, you free him. The continued detention of #MNK without any charge is illegal & against the Law.”

BIAFRA NEWS : No double standards on Biafra’s independence, Uwazuruike tells UN

The arrowhead of the Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has tasked the United Nations, to avoid playing double standards on the issue of Biafra independence.

Uwazuruike, who gave the advice via a press statement signed by his Director of Information and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mazi Chris Anierobi Mocha, also maintained that “the struggle for independence from Nigeria, is still on course”.

His words: “This press statement is in commemoration of the 23rd year of the historic re-declaration of the New Biafra at Faulks Road, Aba, Abia State, on May 22, 2000.

“The 2023 Biafra Day celebration is in line with our non-violence principle towards the carving out of Biafra as a separate, and independent state, from Nigeria.

“According to world history, there was no revolutionary struggle, no matter how long it took, ever failed to achieve its goals and objectives.”

Uwazuruike admitted that starting a revolution, as he did 23 years ago, at Faulks Road, Aba, was “the most trying times and difficult decision anyone could take in his lifetime”.

He said: “I did it and carried the cross for the sake of the oppressed and marginalized people of Biafra.”
He listed some of the activities lined up for this year’s anniversary, including, bringing the attention of the Unrepresented Nations and People’s Organizations, UNPO, and other United Nations bodies, to the fact that Biafran’s struggle for independence from Nigeria was still on course.

While recalling that the United Nations had in recent years, accorded recognition to some nations in Europe with smaller populations, he tasked the world body to avoid playing double standard on the issue of Biafra.

He said: “Free Biafra from Nigeria, by doing the needful, according to your own laid down principles on self-determination.”
On why he chose May 22, every year as Biafra Day, as against May 30, Uwazuruike explained that what he re-declared at Aba on May 22nd, 2000 ( 23 years ago) was a New Biafra.

His words: “The name, New Biafra, was derived from the fact that the Biafra of today, is different from the Biafra of 1967.
“The Biafra of 1967, was characterized by violence, which led to the loss of about three million lives, while the New Biafra, which I started on September 13, 1999, and submitted the Bill of Rights to United Nations on November 1, 1999, was built on Non-violence and Non- exodus philosophy.

“Former Biafra, led by Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, was discontinued after about three years of war, 1967 -1970, while the New Biafra, is a continuation of the former, with a new method, new concept and new ideology.”

BIAFRA NEWS : Supreme Court must set Nnamdi Kanu free – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has expressed hope that the Supreme Court would set its leader, Nnamdi Kanu free.

IPOB made the remark while stressing that Kanu did not commit any offence.

The group urged its followers to be circumspective in their movement ahead of Kanu’s trial.

Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, lamented that the group’s enemies alerted security agents to attack its members.

A statement by Powerful reads partly: “It’s very important that we advise Biafrans, particularly those of us in the South East, to be circumspective in their movement these days as the case of Onyendu at the Supreme Court of Nigeria is coming up.

“It’s obvious that our enemies have already alerted their Security and Criminal Agents, who have started attacking people and security forces in the East to blackmail IPOB and ESN so as to pollute the minds of the Supreme Court Judges handling Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case. We can assure all of them that their plans are dead on arrival.

“We, therefore, ask our people not to yield into the plans of our enemies but to remain calm, peaceful, and prayerful. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not committed any crime known to local or international laws but is being held illegally in DSS solitary confinement because of ethnic profiling and prejudice. He must be set free by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

BIAFRA NEWS : IPOB declares May 30 sit-at-home to honour fallen heroes

The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared May 30 as a day for sit-at-home in the South-East to honour its fallen heroes and those who died during the civil war.

The pro-Biafran group stated that the lockdown would be total as every economic, social, religious, and political activity in the region would be suspended with the exception of hospitals, doctors, nurses, ambulances, and other health workers.

We remember our eternal leader, Ikemba Nnewi Dikedioranma Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, General Philip Efiong, Dr Frank Opigo, Okonko Ndem, Col. Achzie, Bruce Mayrock, Christian aid workers, Biafra aid volunteers, and many others who contribution during the civil war.

“We remember IPOB members who were brutally murdered during peaceful protests and rallies, those murdered in Aba, Onitsha, Asaba, Igweocha, Enugu, Nkpor, Ebonyi in cold blood by the Nigeria Army at the resident of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, in 2017.

“This year’s event will be special, and the one-day sit-at-home in Biafraland will be total and will be from 6am to 6pm on May 30, 2023. Every economic, social, religious, and political activity in Biafraland will be suspended, with the exception of hospitals, doctors, nurses, ambulances, and other health workers. All other people and workplaces are advised to sit at home.

“Also, Biafrans in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria are encouraged to join the sit-at-home order on that day;  it’s only one day. We, therefore, advise Biafrans and other residents in Biafra territory to avoid endangering their lives or their businesses by obeying the sit-at-home order from IPOB’s leadership.

“Wherever our people are or gathered on that day, they must pray with lit candles and must observe three minutes of silence immediately at 12 noon. Finally, the only joy and rest to appease our fallen heroes and heroines is Biafra restoration. So, ‘we must continue’.”

t stated this in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Monday, while calling on industries, companies, transport compa sea) hotels, schools, and churches to shut down in honour of its heroes and heroines.he statement read, “IPOB, ably led by the leader, Nnamdi Kanuo remind Biafrans, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafra freedom across the world that May 30 is sacrosanct a

BIAFRA NEWS : Nnamdi Kanu’s Biafra agitation constitutional, not illegal – Ozekhome

Activist lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome has said the self-determination struggle of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is constitutional.

Ozekhome said Kanu’s self-determination campaign was backed by Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, African Charter of Human and People’s Rights, as well as Article 3 and 4 of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People of 2007.

Speaking during the Handshake Across The Niger 2 in Enugu State on Friday, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria stressed that Kanu’s agitation was not illegal.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to order Kanu’s immediate release.

According to Ozekhome: “For the information of those harbouring the thought that it was an illegality or unconstitutionality, his self-determination agitation, is in line with the Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948); African Charter of Human and People’s Rights, Article 3&4 of United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (2007), among others. Nigeria is a signatory to all these statues.

“Please sir, on my bended knees, you can order the release of Nnamdi Kanu today.

“You can do it through the Attorney General of the Federation, who has the power to discontinue the case.”

BIAFRA NEWS : Biafra not dead, will be restored soon – IPOB replies Obasanjo

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said Biafra would soon be restored because the agitation is not dead.

IPOB was reacting to a remark credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo that Biafra was dead and buried on 13th January 1970.

The spokesman of the group, Emma Powerful, said no amount of blackmail or propaganda could stop the restoration of Biafra.

Stressing that Obasanjo acknowledged there was “Igbophobia” in Nigeria, IPOB asked which ethnic group has been subjugated, maltreated, deprived, discriminated against, profiled, hated, militarized, and their youths murdered like the Igbos.

A statement by Powerful reads: “The Indigenous People of Biafra under Nnamdi Kanu wish to remind the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, that Biafra is not dead and was never buried but much alive and eventually the Sun shall rise to never set again.

“Obasanjo, as a special guest at Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s one-year celebration in office at the event in Awka, Anambra State, erroneously said he believed that Biafra died and was buried on 13th January 1970 during his comment at that occasion.

“We want Obasanjo to know that Biafra is not dead and definitely not buried. No amount of propaganda and blackmail against the IPOB movement will make us change our resolve to restore Biafra. We either restore Biafra or we die restoring Biafra.”

BIAFRA NEWS : How Nigerian Secret Police, DSS Sacked Medical Doctor Who Diagnosed Nnamdi Kanu's Deteriorating Health Condition

The lawyer revealed that a particular doctor with the DSS who first diagnosed the speedy depreciation in Kanu’s potassium level was sacked recently by the agency, for daring to make accurate findings.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has again emphasised that Kanu's health condition had deteriorated to the extent that he currently needs the “urgent service of a cardiologist.”
The lawyer revealed that a particular doctor with the DSS who first diagnosed the speedy depreciation in Kanu’s potassium level was sacked recently by the agency, for daring to make accurate findings.
Ejiofor, while giving an update on his routine visit to Kanu in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody in Abuja on Monday, in a statement said that Kanu lamented that his health had been made worse by trial-and-error medical experiment being carried out on him by other in-house unqualified doctors brought by the DSS.
Ejiofor stated that “The visit also provided us an opportunity to further find out Onyendu’s present health status.
“Onyendu, who looked visibly frail, once again narrated to me how his body has been turned into “trial and error experiment” by the quack in-house medical practitioners recruited by the DSS who ostensibly know next to nothing about Onyendu’s peculiar health condition.
“Onyendu was emphatic that he is in dire need of the service of a cardiologist for a comprehensive medical examination.
“Onyendu lamented that one particular doctor with the DSS who first diagnosed the speedy depreciation in his potassium level was sacked early last year by the vindictive agency, for daring to make such profound findings.
“It is on this note that we are calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately release Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the DSS, in line with the unambiguous order of the Court of Appeal which discharged him and forbade his further detention.”  Why can't they obey court orders and let this mail go... and his brothers are not helping matters. They are busy fighting over his financial accounts.....Ekpo is busy doing zuzu in Finland,I pray he is deported then he would know that he can stand a day for which Mazi have withstand...the political and economic brouhaha have even made people to forget about Mazi.. this life no balance at all

BIAFRA NEWS : Peter Obi not destined to be President in 2023 – Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide, said the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s presidency is not destined to happen in 2023.

The group also applauded the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as the winner and President-elect of the presidential election held on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

Ohanaeze also expressed confidence in Tinubu as a capable democrat who can continue the great feats of president Muhammadu Buhari, when he assumes office on 29th May, 2023. The statement read, “The group visualises the success of the APC flagbearer in the election contest as one that will lead to unifying Nigerians for a focused development plan that will follow.

“Tinubu is capable, and we have no doubt in his capacity to ensure the continuity of the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari, which are apparent, indisputably correct and will continue to stand as good legacies for generations of leaders to come.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo congratulates Peter Obi for creating an unprecedented commitment to changing the status quo with a hitherto unpopular political party, making great sweeps of votes across all regions but North West of Nigeria to finish an “unputdownable” third position.”

Speaking on Obi’s hardwork and fate at the  presidential poll, it said, “This Igbo umbrella body will continue to remember Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, as one who, despite all odds, laboured hard to actualise a Nigerian President from the Igboland. However, God has not destined it to happen in 2023. It may happen later. God spares the life of everybody.”

“It would not be out of place to also congratulate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ‘s presidential candidate, His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar GCON, on his effort that ended in second position. Across the top three political parties were Igbo sons and daughters, who made the frantic effort because, as APC, PDP and LP, there are Igbo people who notably campaigned and voted.“However, the bloc votes for Peter Obi in the South East should not be seen by anyone as anti-other Nigerians. It is more to show that the Igbo do not hate themselves, as some Nigerians say.

“In all, the general performances of the candidates across parties have given this group the confidence to agree that the emergence of one of them, who is Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is well deserved and we say congratulations!

“We also want to seize this opportunity to call on some elements in Lagos State, who see the vote for Labour Party’s Peter Obi as hate by Igbo people and who are, therefore, now threatening the lives of Igbo. It should not be so. From the investigations by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide, the vote in Lagos was not solely an Igbo thing but a decisive voting system by a rainbow movement of people from across the tribes, who live and do business in Lagos State.

“It should be seen more as Nigerians across tribes exercising their franchise to freely vote to choose their leaders in a democracy as enshrined and guaranteed in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Those who are circulating videos, threatening and drumming the sounds of war over the coming governorship and House of Assembly elections of March 11, 2023, in Lagos State because of Igbo people, should stop it in the national interest of Nigeria and the collective good of the masses of the Nigerian people.

“We would not end this press statement without having to extol the grand performance of President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, the General Lucky Irabor-led Nigerian Armed Forces, the IGP Usman Alkali Baba-led Nigeria Police Force and the Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi-led Department of State Service (DSS) as well as the leadership of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their neutrality that brought whatever challenges emanating from the recent voting exercise to the barest minimum.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide, therefore, calls on the President, the security forces and security/intelligence agencies to improve on the performances of the last election to make the governorship and national assembly elections of March 11 more commendable.”

BIAFRA NEWS : Federal lawmaker reacts to sit-at-home order by Biafra agitator

Uju Kingsley Chima, a member of the House of Representatives, has reacted to the sit-at-home order by Simon Ekpa’s faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Recall that the outlawed separatist group had threatened to issue a sit-at-home order in the South East during Saturday’s general elections.

Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday afternoon, Chima rubbished the sit-at-home order by Ekpa, insisting that over 3, 000 people came out for rallies in the South East ahead of this weekend’s general election.

Chima said: “The question we are asking today is who are the persons declaring these [orders]. I told you about an incident yesterday where policemen were claiming to be unknown gunmen at one of the rallies. They even said to them “we are unknown gunmen” and that people should go.”

He further said: “A greater percentage of what is happening in the South East are not done by the agitators. I don’t know who they are, but I am just telling you that a bigger percentage is done by desperation, desperation to win an election. How can a policeman wear a mask, I ask you this question, is it right for a policeman to wear a mask on election day to go to a rallying point and disperse people with teargas?

“He is not meant to wear a mask, pretending or hiding under cover of the unknown gunmen to protect their act, this is the major problem we are having in the South East.”

Meanwhile, Ekpa, who declared that there would be no election in the Southeast, was reportedly arrested by the Finland authority on Thursday.

BIAFRA NEWS : Simon Ekpa released by Finnish Police after hours of questioning

A popular pro-Biafra separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa, has been released by Police in Finland, hours after he was arrested and grilled on Thursday, according to HS.

Earlier in the day, Ekpa was escorted out of his apartment in Lahti by Finnish policemen.

He was later released after the police allegedly arrested him for a suspected crime.

The Finnish Central Criminal Police has now confirmed Ekpa’s release on Thursday.

The police claimed Ekpa’s arrest was in connection with the ongoing preliminary investigation.

“The person being questioned today is suspected of a crime. We will return to the title on Friday,” Tommi Reen from the Central Criminal Police told HS during a phone interview.

Ekpa, a self-acclaimed disciple of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, had repeatedly ordered the people of the South-East to observe a sit-at-home and asked them to boycott the country’s general elections billed for Saturday.

BIAFRA NEWS : African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dissociated itself from the purported endorsement

African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dissociated itself from the purported endorsement

Trustees, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, described the alleged endorsements as fraudulent, void and of no effect.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dissociated itself from the purported endorsement of other political parties and their candidates for 2023 by a faction of the party.

Earlier, there was a report that ADC has endorsed the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, for the Saturday's presidential election. The purported endorsement was held at the River Plate Gardens in Abuja on Monday morning.

The coalition, which is made up of several star alliance partners such as Nigeria Mothers for Good Governance, Fulani United, and League of Imams, among others, said they seek to create a formidable force for the Obi/Datti ticket.

The event was attended by prominent figures such as the ADC National Chairman, Chief Raphael Nwosu, BoT Chairman,Dr Mani Ibrahim Ahmed and Prof Pat Utomi.

However, a statement by ADC's Chairman, Board of Trustees, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, described the alleged endorsements as fraudulent, void and of no effect, adding that the endorsement was being carried by a faction of the party not known to law for pecuniary gains.

It blamed a faction of the party, led by its immediate past National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu for the anti-party activity.

According to the party, Nwosu’s faction has allegedly divided itself into three groups which are now illegally engaged in endorsing parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) for 2023 general elections all in a bid to make quick money.

Akwashiki warned those involved in the act to desist, noting that if not they would face the full wrath of the law.

According to the statement, its presidential candidate for 2023, Dumebi Kachikwu, had “long warned about criminals in ADC who sell the party to the bigger parties.

“They have divided themselves into three groups and collected money from APC, PDP and Labour. One party, three endorsements within the space of four days. Shameful.”

The statement further stated party under the interim leadership of Senator Akwashiki, described those who carried the endorsements as “impostors” and “impersonators” who were no longer members of ADC.

"Therefore, their endorsement has nothing to do with the authentic ADC recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We are appalled that renegades who are no longer known to the ADC can constitute themselves into a criminal gang to perpetuate illegalities all in the name of making quick money.

“This condemnable action will not stop our party or its presidential candidate from running the race to the very end.

“We are determined to ensure that the bright chances of all ADC candidates in the forthcoming general elections are not sold or mortgaged as was the practice in the past.

“The arm of the law will soon catch up with all those responsible for these criminal and shameful activities," the statement partly read.

BIAFRA NEWS : ESN will hunt down Ebubeagu – IPOB reacts to ban of security outfit

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has directed the Eastern Security Network, ESN, to hunt down operatives of the Southeast Security Network, Ebubeagu.

IPOB issued the directive while noting that the days of Ebubeagu men are numbered in the Southeast.

Emma Powerful, the Spokesman of IPOB, issued the directive in response to the disbandment of the Ebubeagu outfit by the Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The disbandment followed human rights abuses, extortions, illegal arrests and use of firearms perpetuated by the security outfit.

Reacting to the ruling, Powerful described Ebubeagu as political thugs that have committed many atrocities and genocides against Imo and Ebonyi indigenes and all Biafrans in general.

A statement by Powerful reads partly: “We are mandating ESN Operatives to hunt down anybody known as Ebubeagu militia members anywhere in the East. We cannot allow these criminals to flourish in the peaceful region of the Southeast.

“We are now out for Ebubeagu militia and their days are numbered in our land. ESN Operatives will dislodge them. We have discovered that they are the people doing the job of unknown gunmen to blackmail IPOB and ESN Operatives as well.

“Those who claim to be the next line of leaders in Biafra Land but are involved in the numerous death of youths in the land should know that the same youths will unleash vengeance on them soon someday.”

BIAFRA NEWS : IPOB and web of election boycott order in South East

The recent declaration by the Simon Ekpa-led faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that the 2023 general election would not take place in the South East geo-political zone of the country has been generating fear and tension in the region. In this report, LAWRENCE NJOKU, Southeast Bureau Chief, chronicles Ekpa’s past orders that were successfully enforced and efforts by stakeholders to ensure that residents discountenance his latest directive in the interest of the region

There are worries in the Southeast region over whether or not the people would participate in the 2023 general election beginning from next Saturday. The worry is not because the elected democratic administration of the country has not carried the zone along in the processes leading to the elections; it is generally out of a contrary order by non-state actors led by a breakaway leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa, that there would be no elections in the region.  Through a recorded video that has gone viral on the social media, he stated that the period of the election would be observed as sit-at-home throughout Igboland, adding that it was part of the measures to put pressure on the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the Directorate of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since 2021.

In the video, Ekpa appraised the five-day sit-a-home he declared on 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th December, 2022, which he said was “historic and successful” in Igboland. He added that boycotting the 2023 elections was a “sacrifice” for the realisation of Biafra and an effort to “end Nigeria in 2023.”

The caption of the video reads: “To end Nigeria in 2023 is a task that must be done! There will be no general election in Biafraland in 2023; it is a sacrifice and a task that must be done by all Biafrans across the globe.

“I want every Biafran to watch this broadcast and share widely. Don’t miss it…Follow enterbiafra.com to know how IPOB activities delay Fulanisation of Nigeria. I am Simon Ekpa, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple on Biafra restoration.”

It was not the first time Ekpa would issue such an order, which was complied with. Ekpa had issued a sit-at-home order on May 16, 17 and 18, 2022. In a Tweet where he announced the May sit-at-home, Ekpa had said it would go down in the history of Biafra liberation that there was lockdown for three days to demand the release of Kanu.

“Get ready for a historic lockdown of Biafraland in the month of May. It will go down in the history of Biafra liberation that we locked down our territory for three days demanding the release of MNK. Save the following dates: 16th, 17th and 18th of May 2022 will be sit-at-home for MNK,” he had tweeted.

Those who tried to flaunt his orders were met with volley of bullets from his gang. The last attempt claimed the life of a pregnant woman in Enugu and a few others. His adherents go extra miles to enforce his orders including killing and setting properties ablaze to instill fear in the people.

Since the latest directive was issued, fear, concerns and tension have pervaded the region. Those who are preparing to participate in the forthcoming elections are beginning to give it a second thought. In small groups, people discuss the development. Those who would not discuss would simply tell you that it is better to stay away.

However, those opposed to the order have been using some social media platforms to send anonymous messages to counter Ekpa. One of such messages reads: “Attention please!  I am appealing to all well meaning Igbo and our educated elites to start now and use the instrumentality of social media and every other means of spreading information to enlighten our people to resist the satanic agenda of Simon Ekpa to drastically reduce Peter Obi’s votes in the Southeast through his reckless and devilish sit-at-home activities, which he intend to declare on the election week. This is the best opportunity of the Igbo nation in the Nigerian project. It will be a shame and a curse to Igbo nation that other tribes in Nigeria are killing themselves and doing everything for our son, Peter Obi, to emerge the president and we are the ones trying to scuttle it through the nonsense activities of one Finland based opportunist called Simon Ekpa and his collaborators in the name of fighting for Biafra.  Igbos, do not be deceived. Even great Zik of Africa did not enjoy the kind of support Peter Obi is enjoying today that has changed the political dynamics of Nigeria. That will show you that it is divine. When you watch Peter Obi’s campaign in Kaduna, Kano and Katsina, you only but marvel at the level of his acceptability even in the core north. Please, I beg you; share this write up on other platforms. Thanks.”

The Biafra struggle has been a very thorny one. It has created war. It has claimed lives. It has claimed properties. It has caused misery and pains. While some has leveraged the agitation to make names and wealth, others try to forget it in a hurry. All in all, the people of the Southeast region have been at the receiving end.

In 2012, as part of efforts to give bite to the struggle, Kanu, a British-Nigerian political activist, and Uche Mefor, founded IPOB based on their conviction that the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, a lawyer, had compromised. Uwazuruike, who took up the struggle with MASSOB after the failed attempt to actualise Biafra through the war, was accused of enriching himself and abandoning the objectives for which the group was set up. So, IPOB was formed to give a new bite and zeal to the campaign.

Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, had accused Ekpa of not following laid down rules of operation in the broadcasting station. He had warned that IPOB would not allow anybody including him (Ekpa) to act arbitrarily, because the group was well structured and adheres to principles.

“Our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gave the directive while in detention, but Mazi Simeon Ekpa has refused to follow the principles. Ekpa, whom our leader gave an appointment and duty to start broadcasting on Radio Biafra, doesn’t want to follow the laid down rules of operation in Radio Biafra. Ekpa has refused to sign the rules of engagement and code of conduct guiding those broadcasting on Radio Biafra. We don’t understand why Ekpa would not like to follow the steps of other broadcasters on the platform who have since done the needful”, Powerful had said.

Sources told The Guardian that Ekpa’s sack from Radio Biafra became their point of departure. Since then, he has done things differently from the main group in his bid to purportedly realise Biafra and free Kanu from custody. His group takes instructions only from him and cares less about the negative implications of their action on the society. While he dishes out orders from Finland, they follow it squarely against several advise that a genuine freedom fighter should not only live with his people but should not also create pains for the same people he is fighting to liberate through his actions.

On several occasions, the main faction of IPOB led by Kanu had opposed his orders. For instance, when he imposed the three days sit-at-home and later the five days sit-at-home, the faction loyal to Kanu had issued contrary directives, asking residents to ignore it. In one of his statements in December last year against the five days sit-at-home, the faction had said: “The global family and movement of the IPOB under the command and leadership of our great prophet and indefatigable liberator, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, wish to state unequivocally to the people of Biafra, friends of Biafra and lovers of Biafra freedom that IPOB leadership did not issue any sit-at-home order on 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th or 14th of December 2022.

“IPOB never issued any sit-at-home order on these days mentioned above because we are not miscreants, senseless or jobless people.
“Every Biafran and residents in Biafra land should ignore such order from untrained and brainless individuals whose agenda is to make Biafra agitation unattractive to our people. Every Biafran must go to their normal business on those days.

“IPOB who is concerned about our people cannot issue such brainless, uncaring five-day consecutive sit-at-home order to suffer our people during this critical time of the year when people are trying to make up in their businesses for the year.

“The conception of consecutive five-day sit-at-home by a Nigeria Agent and his sponsors is to show the level of wickedness and hatred they have against our people. Their agenda is to create insecurity and unnecessary hardships to make our people jettison Biafra freedom.”

Ironically, it was actually the Kanu-led IPOB that regularised the idea of sit-at-home in the region. Although sit-at-home had been infused into the struggle to celebrate “Biafra Day” by adherents of MASSOB, their case then was that the day was set aside to mourn all those who died in the pursuit of Biafra restoration. During such days, they undertook candle light processions, symposium and lectures, among others. However, the idea became more regular and elevated after Kanu was arrested in 2021. His supporters had come up with an order declaring sit-at-home every Monday and any day Kanu would appear in court to face his trial as a way to show solidarity to him and pressure the Federal Government to release him unconditionally. They had insisted that on those days, businesses and several other activities must be put on hold, warning that anything to the contrary would be met with sanctions.

They had acted true to their words but following several interventions, they announced an adjustment, opting to enforce the sit-at-home only on days that Kanu would appear in court to answer to his charges. The development brought temporary relief on the residents as activities resumed in full swing on Mondays. This, however, reclined when the breakaway faction surfaced and began to deal with residents found doing businesses on Mondays. The group insisted that sit-at-home would be enforced throughout the Southeast on Mondays until Kanu is released.

Although the main IPOB has continued to assure residents that it had long cancelled the order and that anyone enforcing it should be arrested and tried, the fear of being attacked has continued to keep residents in their homes every Monday.

While some governors of the region maintained sealed lips on the situation, an attempt by Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, to restart the economy of the state on Mondays was stoutly resisted by members of the group who shot, killed and burnt properties of those who tried to flout the order, a development that effectively rubbished the attempt.

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had severally insisted that Ekpa’s group was not acting in the interest of the people of the region. Describing the actions of the faction as “illegal”, Ohanaeze asked Ekpa “if he is a hero or a villain, for taking such actions that have caused great havoc in parts of the region,” National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia had said.

Reacting to Ekpa’s current order, former chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, Chief Ralph Obioha, called on Ndigbo to ignore calls for boycott of the general election and prepare to vote despite hindrances, while asking those pushing for the boycott to retrace their steps. He insisted that it was not in the interest of the zone to allow certain individuals operating in the guise of Biafra to distort the collective will of the people especially with the aspiration of the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Obi, gaining momentum nationwide.

At a public lecture on Electoral Process in Nigeria and 2023 Elections organised in Enugu within the week, Executive Director, Hope Givers Initiative (HOGI), Mrs. Onyeka-Okey Udegbulam, had raised concerns over the call for boycott, stressing that it would impact negatively on the enthusiasm the residents of the region had developed on the electoral process and the 2023 general election.

Udegbulam, who told a capacity-filled hall that her organisation had embarked on a sensitisation campaign in the region to discourage voter apathy, stated that fear of insecurity resulting from the boycott order could affect the process.

“So we think there is so much to do. We need to ensure that the message sinks into the ears of our people that voting on the Election Day is their civic obligation. There is so much fear in the zone due to insecurity and threats here and there but we should resist it, knowing that whether we vote or not, the elections must produce a winner who will be there for another four years. I therefore appeal to the academics and elites to use whatever means that is available to them to talk to our people and allay these fears. To the students who are the future hope, you must be prepared to take your destiny in your own hands and ensure that a better tomorrow can only come through the right choices and decisions. You must not allow yourselves to be cowed while your destiny is eroded,” she said.

In the same vein, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, visited several churches in his diocese last Sunday with a message that they must ignore calls to boycott the elections next Saturday.

“I know that there is a lot of pain out there. There is no cash; cost of petrol has tripled. Salaries have not been paid and many homes don’t have food to eat. But I will encourage you to continue to bear and hope for a better tomorrow. This brighter future can only come when we make good use of the opportunity of this election. Do not succumb to intimidation; do not be cowed. Go and vote the right person that will lead Nigeria. Security agencies have promised to provide adequate security. So ignore any person that will tell you that you will be attacked. Ignore anybody that will want to buy your vote and do what is right for the good of our country,” the cleric told members of Our Saviour’s Church, One Day, Enugu.

Also, both MASSOB, led by Uchenna Madu and the Kanu-led IPOB have vowed to resist any sit-at-home during the elections. In a statement last week by its spokesperson, IPOB had said: “IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has never forcefully obstructed the election process in Nigeria. Rather, we once called Biafrans to boycott elections, which were later called off.

“We have maintained that we don’t have any interest in the Nigeria shambolic political selection process called Nigeria elections scheduled for February 2023. Our interest and focus is the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the date for the Biafra referendum for Biafrans to determine their political future in or outside Nigeria.”

MASSOB, through Madu, had warned that it would deal with any group that attempts to disrupt elections in the South East, insisting that though it was poised for the realisation of Biafra, it would not do so through any violent means. He, therefore, urged the people to go out and cast their votes, stating that doing so was part of their civic rights.

National Coordinator, Southeast for Presidency Movement 2023 (SEFORP2023), Rev. Okechukwu Obioha, told The Guardian that the call for election boycott was a distraction, stressing that the people of the zone should not fall for it. Insisting that it was an attempt to blackmail the zone, he wondered what benefits would accrue to the people by not voting on the election day. Obioha stressed that he had always canvassed that those agitating for Biafra can always realise their aspirations by engaging in politicking, such that would enable them leverage the political platforms to register and deliver their members at the polls.

“These members will in turn implement those policies and programmes that will usher in the desires so expressed. It is better than engaging in violence and creating unnecessary tension in the polity. Joining the struggle for Biafra should not be by force. When you order people to sit at home or not to vote on election day, you are pushing them against their wish and that is against the spirit of the constitution that guarantees freedom of choice,” Obioha noted.

During the signing of peace accord by political parties in Enugu State last week, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, had urged residents to come out on the election day and cast their votes. He insisted that adequate security had been planned, just as he called on those planning to obstruct the process to refrain or have themselves to blame.

Meanwhile, there are underground moves to cage Ekpa and his group in the southeast region. Last year, an association of Igbos residing in Germany – Overseas Igbos Federation – submitted a criminal complaint against him at the Prosecutor’s Office in Southern Finland over the crisis in the Southeast region.

The Germany-based group accused Ekpa, a lawyer based in Finland of committing crimes against humanity; leading, participating and funding terrorism activities in the Southeast zone.

Also, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, the media were awash with reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Finnish Ambassador, Leena Pylvanainen, over misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and inciting comments by Ekpa, which it fears could derail the peaceful conduct of the 2023 general election.

It was reported that at the meeting, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, had expressed displeasure over the orders given by Ekpa to his teeming followers who consequently embarked on killings, maiming, burning and other destructive activities.

The Minister, who was represented by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubairu Dada, said Ekpa’s action was fast becoming a threat to the forthcoming election, adding that the Federal Government would not take it lightly with him and the Finland governments if nothing drastic was done.

Will these interventions stop further moves by Ekpa and his adherents against the 2023 general election and encourage the southeast to participate fully in it? The coming days will provide the answer to this question.

BIAFRA NEWS : Sit-at-home, Finland debunks arrest threat against Ekpa

The Embassy of Finland in Nigeria has refuted a letter making the rounds that the Finnish Government warned Finland-based Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, to desist from his clamour for the actualisation of Biafra republic or risk arrest and prosecution for terrorism.

“The Embassy would greatly appreciate it if you could take this information into account in your reporting.”

The clarification was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had Tuesday summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Leena Pylvanainen, over alleged hate speech and inciting comments credited to the Ekpa-led faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra.

The group had reportedly ordered sit-at-home and also declared that elections will not be allowed to be held in the South-East region.

However, the Finnish embassy in its statement said that the letter did not originate from Helsinki.

It read, “This is to inform you that the attached letter purporting to be signed by the Prime Minister of Finland and currently circulating widely in the media does not originate from the Finnish government.

“We have reported the Twitter message with which this fake letter was originally distributed and asked Twitter to remove it. Regrettably, copies continue circulating in social media and on various internet platforms.

BIAFRA NEWS : IPOB raises alarm over planned bank attacks in Southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised the alarm that its intelligence unit, the M-Branch, has uncovered plans by some criminal elements,

claiming to be its leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s disciples to invade banks in Abia State and blame it on IPOB and ESN operatives. The group labeled the individuals fake disciples.

“We, the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

under the command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu wish to disassociate ourselves from the secret plans to attack banks in Abia State or other

state in Biafra while masses are looking for new currency notes,” IPOB said in a statement signed by its Media, and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful.

“IPOB intelligence unit, the M-Branch, released this Intel in advance to advise our people to be prepared because they have devised another

means to suffer our people. The purported sit-at-home orders have failed; their contractors want them to change strategies that will also be dead on arrival.

“We made this Intel public for our people to know that there is danger ahead and the danger will come in different ways against our innocent citizens.

Therefore, we call on all Biafrans to resist any attempt to be used by anyone to attack and destroy the banks in Igbo land. MNK has consistently warned our people that banks, worship centers, schools, and markets are not places to vent anger at in times of protest or wars.

“Our people should know that any bank attacked or destroyed in Biafra land our enemies will use to justify why our people will not be able to access their monies from banks. Other ethnic groups can protest and destroy banks without the Nigeria government punishing them, but in the case of Biafrans, particularly Igbos are visited with wickedness and shedding of blood.

“Our people must keep their emotions in check and realize that the issues of Biafra freedom are beyond emotions. We all need Biafra to come quickly,

but we must be cautious not to play into the hands of our already weakened and frustrated enemies,” IPOB warned, urging the Igbo not to “support or join any attack on any bank in Biafra land, particularly at Aba, Abia State.”

The group insisted that it was not part of the plan, saying that IPOB does not encourage nor indulge in criminalities.

“In the event of attack on any bank in the East, Biafrans should hold Autopiloters who have branded themselves MNK disciples responsible because they have committed other criminalities.

“That not withstanding; we are going to checkmate them because they have decided to blackmail IPOB and ESN operatives with their criminal plans. We cannot afford to be part of activities that will increase the pain and suffering of our people who we are fighting for their freedom.

BIAFRA NEWS : CBN orders banks to collect old N500, N1,000 notes

CBN orders banks to collect old N500, N1,000 notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has directed Deposit Money Banks to collect old N500, and N1,000 notes from customers with reference code generated from its website.
Multiple bank sources told Vanguard that the branches received a directive from the head office some hours ago that they should collect the old notes from their customers who have enrolled and generated reference code from the CBN website.

A top CBN official confirmed the directive: “Yes we have directed them to collect the old N500 and N1,000 from customers, subject to maximum of N500,000.”  Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari directed that the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer legal tenders, but that those having the notes should take the notes to the CBN.

Consequently, the CBN opened a portal for people with the old N500 and N1,000 notes to register how much they want to deposit and to get a reference code to confirm there registration.
The reference code will be used to deposit the old notes at any of the CBN offices across the country.

However, investigation revealed that the CBN might have allowed the banks to collect the old notes from their customers, following the huge number of people that besieged its offices to deposit the old N500 and N1,000.
A top bank official and branch head told Vanguard that the branch will collect old notes from customers tomorrow (Saturday) as the branch did not open to customers today due to fear of attack.
